Had this as a kid. It was one of the few games I owned and I'm pretty sure it's the reason I'm now mentally ill. Though it was cool being able to switch between the different turtles. I never really made it far in the game. I feel like the NES was often a shitty console for kids. The games were hardcore on a level zoomers wouldn't understand. Trying to beat Castlevania III right now and the water section of stage nine is kicking me in the nuts.

If you're sequence-breaking and using glitches to speed through the game like a pre-programmed computer, you're not skilled or talented. You have a hard-wired response that's been burned into the memory in your mind tied to reflexive action that is only made possible because you have a retarded brain. There's a good reason speedrunners don't have lives beyond their hobby/competition. Too mentally fucked to do anything else but pull off NPC tasks in games.

The shit doesn't impress me. It's not amazing. Juggling fire is amazing.

>> No.8277396

It's almost like there are entire categories dedicated to legit, glitchless runs. But I know young people being infinitely better at you than those games you spent your whole life playing makes you feel irrelevant and out of place so you lash out like this. It's fine, you do not need to get out of your comfort zone, you don't actually need to get good to have your casual fun, because apparently putting in effort in a game is autistic and evil and only zoomers do it but not when it fits your narrative.

Just like the Mirage Comics.

Which canon? The Mirage Comics had the same amount of bat shit designs as the Fred Wolf cartoon. It strikes me as weird they used Bebop, Rocksteady, and Techno drome which were made for the Fred Wolf cartoon, but no Krang fighting. The game was made before the cartoon was widely shown in Japan. If you check the Japanese manual, it claims April is Splinter's sister (really). So Konami had really shitty references to make it work.

The Japanese are the masters of the hardest genre of gaming, the Shmup. RPGs are a lot more mental than physical and people with higher IQ can enjoy them, whereas dumbasses can't appreciate them and only play reflexive shit. Interestingly, Mario 2 was really the only game for the NES that was denied a release because it was too hard. Philips knew Mario was extremely important to the brand and couldn’t fuck it up early with a brutal meme sequel. I doubt he gave a shit about anything else. You’re more likely to find a game that was altered for Japan because it’s too hard than you are for the same thing to happen in America

There are plenty of other games like Section Z that are as bad as SMB2j that got passed by NOA so that alone isn't a reason. The real deal was more that the game was an "expansion pack" for veteran SMB players and didn't offer anything substantially new being the same game engine and all. Howard Phillips had suggested to some NOJ guy that they just localize DDP instead and he agreed. The other thing is that Shiggy was actually involved with developing DDP while he had absolutely nothing to do with SMB2j.

The TMNT phenomenon at the time was based on the TV show. The arcade games were actually based on the show, so they delivered. This did not deliver so well. And the controls were more than a bit frustrating. So it was somewhat disappointing to me as a kid.
Setting that aside, just as a game, it's OK. The graphics are OK. The music is decent. The gameplay is somewhat frustrating, but you can get used to it. I can think of a hundred other NES games I'd rather play, though.

There were plenty of NES games that were easy enough for grade schoolers to get pretty far in like the Chip and Dale games. It's just that back the children were more masculine then some of the adults are today so they had culture where the hardest games were celebrated and sought out.

I'll repeat that again. There were children who were more hardcore then the grown men soys of today. And the kids that didn't want to be hardcore had games for them to play but they didn't go around whining that they couldn't beat ninja gaiden and it needed an easy mode, that level of faggotry had yet to be invented.

The idea that kids are worse at games than adults is a very modern idea and a false one. Kids have faster reflexes, they learn more easily, see how every expert will tell you it's easier to learn a language when you're a kid? It's not just languages, it's everything. And kids have a lot more free time for practice.

Also beating a game was seen as a privilege you have to earn, unlike today when everyone thinks they're entitled to see the ending because they paid for the game and if somehow you need to get good along the way they're so entitled they'll scream "bad game design" or "how were you supposed to know ?!"

8-bit games in general tended to be quite brutally hard because programmers were still working from an arcade quarter muncher approach fo game design and a lot of it was just sloppy programming due to deadlines, programming in assembly language, and having limited debugging tools. Sometimes it was the inherent design of the hardware. While some 8-bit systems had hardware collision detection the NES didn't; you had to do this in software which was more complicated and unreliable.

We didn't have computers to watch our replays, look into game data, record our times or any of the advantages speed runners have today. We also didn't get to sit at home all day in our mom's house at 25 years old playing games.

Nobody I knew lived at home until 20. Everyone was out in the real world working and getting their lives together.
