>Similar controller layout
>Slot at the top of the controller for inserting portable memory cards. Sort of VMU-ish in a way.
>Strong focus on Xbox Live from Microsoft, just like how Sega was proud of the Dreamcast's built-in 56k modem
>Microsoft and Sega originally wanted the Xbox to be able to play Dreamcast games, but this fell through.
>Continuation of Tecmo and Team Ninja games. Dead or Alive 3 and Ultimate have a very clean Sega-like visual style thanks to their Naomi origins. Ninja Gaiden reboot started development on Dreamcast.
>Lots of very Dreamcast-feeling western games like Indigo Prophecy, Fable (which started development on the Dreamcast), MechAssault, Psychonauts, Oddworld games, Voodoo Vince etc. Plus a lot of very mediocre sports and racing exclusives with a real early 2000s arcade aesthetic.

And most importantly:
>A lot of Sega games which started development on the Dreamcast ended up coming exclusively to the Xbox. Crazy Taxi 3, Jet Set Radio Future, ToeJam & Earl III, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Shenmue II, Gunvalkyrie etc. Otogi wasn't meant for the Dreamcast as far as I know but that game rocks too.

If the Xbox didn't have Halo and good ports of PC games, /v/ would be jerking off over it's failure and the great Japanese hidden gems that made up its library.

A lot the original Xbox's big hitters like Kotor, Halo, and Morrowind are readily available on PC where they'll give you a far better experience than on console. But for any Sega or Team Ninja/Tecmo fan, the original Xbox has a lot to check out and enjoy. Some of the Japanese Microsoft Game Studios stuff is worth a look too, like Blinx or Phantom Dust. I'm not saying it's a gold mine of hidden gems, because a lot of it is just "alright" but that's true of the Dreamcast deep cuts too. I love the Xbox and the Dreamcast.

I bet sega regrets ever considering xbox as a development platform. They abandoned their own system to port their own games and ongoing projects to another badly selling platform. They should have gone full in on the PS2. If the DC was on the market for as long as the Xbox it could have sold just as well.

Non of those games would fit on one GC disc. And Shenmue 2 and Orta would need 4.

>> No.8269579

Because it is.

Microsoft were meant to help sega with the dreamcast. Were meant to release games on the console. Handle all of segas online features and add new stuff to the online features.

Once Microsoft saw the plans for the DC they welched on the deal and left sega up shit creak. Online didnt work right for most people and some places like Australia it didnt work for a whole year.

Microsoft stabbed sega in the back, copied the dreamcast design and then did what segaUSA told SegaJapan to do and add a hdd and a dvd drive.

The dreamcast dream key (online) is what Microsoft were meant to have handled. THAT was originally what xbox live was going to be but then instead was used by Microsoft themselves

Same focus on online, built out of off the shelf parts, and most original Sega games were published on the Xbox - including several which were originally Dreamcast games (Shenmue 2, Rent-a-Hero No.1, Toejam & Earl III). Some DC games got Xbox sequels (Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio).
Compared to that, Sega put the sonic games on Nintendo consoles, and released a few "popular in japan", more traditional games on the PS2 (Shining Force Exa, Sakura Taisen, Virtua Fighter 4).

Basically, their more original and more impressive titles were all on Xbox.

>Suffered the same low run problem as Panzer Dragoon Saga.

PDS was published with high print runs in japan and barely sold. They extrapolated projected sales based on that, hence the low print runs.

I wasnt even born when the dreamcast was discontinued, how can i be nostalgic?

>> No.8271818

I was born in 1991 but I never had or played the Dreamcast in my entire childhood. I only did that by emulator almost a decade ago (decided to play Shenmue in 2012-13) and yet it felt very nostalgic for some damn reason. The Dreamcast logo sound/vignette is so iconically retro that it made me feel like I had actually played it in my childhood, and so did Shenmue. It's weird but I feel like you CAN get nostalgic for something you didn't actually live.

As for me it was the availability of many excellent arcade ports of Sega for the Xbox.

The Dreamcast was quite similar to the Naomi system of the arcades. So many arcade games could be easily ported to the Dreamcast and turned out great.

With the death of the Dreamcast Sega also needed a new arcade system. Also it wouldn't have been worthwhile to develope something completely own again since the graphical gap to normal hardware wasn't as big as in the days of the first Daytona USA.

That's when Sega released the Chihiro system which is basically a modified Xbox. So once again great ports of Sega arcade games could be enjoyed.

After Chihiro Sega switched to regular PC hardware.
