SSI Gold Box.

Yay! Another bot thread.

How is this a bot thread? The intent is to open a discussion about the game series.

Never got into the Krynn series. Forgotten Realms were always my thing, so I skipped Krynn.

the disk swapping on C64 will make you become batshit

Damn, that's a nice collection. What would you recommend a first timer to try out of the gold box games?

>the disk swapping on C64 will make you become batshit
no, only the length of the fights will

>> No.8264113

idk
i think its cool
the boxarts in particular were incredibly based
never played em when i was little tho cuz i was too dumb
when i was old enough to be able to comprehend these kinds of games it was NWN, BG1+2 and icewind dale, so i missed this era completely

anything worth going back to?
or should i just go play ultima or something?

>ultima

I liked the Sega port of Buck Rogers. PC version a bit janky for my tastes.

a shitty console port

ironic

Long fights and dungeon crawling don't mix well. The fights aren't too long on their own, but when you can walk down a random hallway and get stuck in a 20 minute random encounter that gets tedious.

>> No.8264551

They put Pool of Radiance on the NES. Proved why CRPGs and consoles don't mix. Only plus side of that one was no load times.

>>8264095
Ugh, that was four double sided disks.

>> No.8264563

SSI made one engine and just kept reskinning it with different assets, it was cheap and very profitable, and these games were big sellers. As opposed to Richard Garriot being autistic enough to insist each Ultima game get a completely new engine coded from the ground up.

>> No.8265242

Some of my fav games.
Pool of Radiance holds a special place in my heart. After I played it one NES I discovered the PC versions and nearly shit myself from excitement. I still have a couple to finish.

The Gold Box games are too primitive for me, but I love Dark Sun: Shattered Lands and Ravenloft: Stone Prophet

Are the games fun to play in present times or only fun if you are a D&D autist? How is the pace of the games?

>> No.8266473

>>8265778
They require obtuse keyboard commands, reading the manual, and on the 8-bit versions a fuckload of disk swapping.

>> No.8266481

>>8264551
it was also pricey as fuck due to the huge ROM and battery save

Yes

Yes

Yeah you pretty much had to just leave the computer on and go back to life for a while before coming back to it.

>obtuse keyboard commands
Oh, come on. Valid commands are always displayed on the screen. How could it be any simpler?
