Does anyone else not want this? I'd rather play it at a lower resolution. They don't filter the UI elements at all, it's all gonna be pixelated shit. Why do they think yoshis island and dr mario would make this look appealing?

This is one of the games that redditors pretend to give a fuck about in order to impress each other. You're right in that no one actually cares.

Anyone paying for that deserves the awful gaming scenario that is brewing. You will own nothing and be happy bs.
Softmod your switch and play emulators and stop paying to lose agency over your hardware.

Maybe I'm wrong. I'm not American and most people I know only have about seven to ten games per console. I suppose if there are millions of Americans who owned this game the numbers make sense. However they who didnt grow up with it are still faking it to impress others.

Dr.Mario is nowhere in that image. Are you talking about pikachu? He's in there. I see some Custom Robo dudes, too.

The N64 Dr.Mario has some interesting design choices. Most of the grunt enemies are from the Wario Land games. You've even got the scary clown (Rudy) in it. There's even a storyplot.

I think this is more of an online subculture thing; most people whom I know just play triple A games. Thankfully indie hacks can't make anything to profit from interest in early 3d as you just can't make it work. It's just so crude that it wouldn't sell, unlike pixel art.

Well, to be fair, the N64 looks like hot shit at native res if you don't play on a CRT. A lot of people repeat the meme about retro games being intended for CRT displays (and yeah, they do look better there), but the N64 is the only console that 100% depends on how CRTs display 240p to make its visuals work.

Pic related is how Majora's Mask REALLY looks on real hardware. You think zoomers are gonna want to play this?

In contrast, this is what they could be playing instead.

Yeah, like you say, the UI elements are still low-res as fuck and clash with the hi-res 3D, but most people will probably swallow that pill.

No I know has played amungus in months. It was a short lived fad, and you're an idiot for not realizing this. I also think it was a very low effort game too.
>akshully normalfags stopped playing it because it stopped being updated
Plenty of games are still popular without being updated. Moreover the lack of ability to update it is caused by it being an indie game.

That's a fair point. I guess all I can hope for additional crt filters, though I won't hold my breathe. The ones they supply on NES/SNES don't seem intense enough to begin to remedy those HUDs.

>> No.8262203

>>8262059
The best compromise is using RetroArch with the Mupen64Plus-Next core and the ParaLLEl-RDP plugin, upscale to a higher res, downsample back down to 240p, and use a CRT shader on top of it all. You get improved 3D at native res while still blending in well with the UI and any 2D pre-rendered stuff.

Yeah, that's true, but only the N64's anti-aliasing and horizontal-only bilinear filtering are straight-up designed to take advantage of 240p on a CRT. The only way to make that look good on anything else it to render the output at a higher resolution, like the ParaLLEl-RDP plugin on modern N64 emulators can.

Classic games look best in their original resolution with television scanlines blending everything properly. They were designed and tested to be viewed that way. "Updating" graphics always seems to lead to a poor quality product. Either the mood of the original is lost or performance suffers by trying to make something 'better' by making it 3D or rendered with new technology when part of the appeal of the original is the old way of doing those things. Age of Empires, for example, used tiny animated gifs or something for the character and the remake uses 3D modeling. It's a step forward in technology but a step backward in aesthetics.
