Why are these games so good?

>> No.8260243

They're kinda bland honestly. The west can't make platformers

Something about Crash is just magical. When I play any of them, especially the first game! I just feel like all is right in the world.

>> No.8260254

Familiar gameplay well translated into 3D without trying too hard for innovation or such scary things

I was summarizing my thoughts but it's this pretty much >>8260254

It's just DKC in 3D. The further they deviated from that, the worse it got.

Crash 2 and 3 were much better than 1 and CTR is the best kart racer ever.

2 and 3 got progressively way too gimmicky while the first game is a pure platformer with tight as balls timing-based obstacles (and the hog level, I guess). Crash 1 is truly the closest a 3D platformer could get to older platformers and that's precisely what makes it so good. Hell, the games managed to avoid entirely the same problem many 3D games like Super Mario 64 have: Enemies are no longer an obstacle when you can just walk around them, they're merely a setpiece.

They were "smart". Gavin and Rubin knew the limitations of the hardware, so they conceived the most linear but also most fun experience that a player could have. The levels aren't as shallow and empty as spyro, banjo or mario 64. Naughty Dog managed to show the world that linear doesn't mean bad. Ars technica made a video on Crash 1, you should watch it.

Crash was going to use a bomb. but they found that this is not correct

Better than most platformers back then. besides crash I say mario 64 is another good platformer

2 barely had any gimmicks, it was a straight improvement from the original. 3 did have a bunch however.

why is crash so handsome?

>> No.8261448

Crash 2's advanced movement mechanics are so satisfying when it's not dropping inputs

>Great, colourful graphics
>Extremely tight control
>Very good music
>Challenging, but fair difficulty (first game only, 2 and 3 are easy for the most part)
>Hidden levels and collectibles to encourage replaying
>Level diversity with a wide variety of locations and gimmicks like planes, motorbikes and jet packs
>provided a great transitionary game for an audience that was familiar with 2D platformers to 3D games

DKC has a run button and a roll forward action.
Crash is more like Hugo.

only 2 was really good. 1 was really basic, even boring, while 3 is bloated

literally no other console game looked that good at the time, so of course it was successful.
