Underground 2 is still fun but overlong edition

Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games. If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

The previous thread suffered a blown head gasket: >>8219269

>Interested in a series to get started with?
https://pastebin.com/Vke5tf9e

Remember to bump, /vr/ has been faster as of late and threads get archived much quicker now. Don't be shy: ask questions, share experiences! If anyone has ideas for community events, speak up!

Can anyone with a NeGcon tell me what their default deadzones are like via USB? My L button responds with sub-1mm of travel, full range. My I and II require about 2mm of pre-travel before they start moving, but they count up/down from 128 counts, so I can get 127/129 readings and beyond, for full travel. (you can find these readings through displaying raw data in windows controller calibration).

My twist is the issue. It doesn't start counting for a full 6mm of rotation, or 12.5mm measured between the seams at the top. And when it does move, the lowest reading I can get is 111/144, so I'm missing the first 16 counts of travel.

I assume the L and I/II readings are correct, but maybe my USB adapter is filtering out the first 16 counts of left and right travel? But then why wouldn't up and down be affected the same way?

And if you have a proper deadzone for twist, can you tell me what adapter you have? I've been through a few so far, one wouldn't read anything analog, the one I'm using now seems to have this deadzone issue, and the older one I bought to replace it doesn't work with 64 bit windows.

Oh I see, I think the solution is to change the powerpcfrequency to 100. Most Model 3 games run at the frequency of 50, but sega rally 2 needs to be higher for some reason.

in the supermodel config, under the global section, add this:

PowerPCFrequency = 100

exactly like that. for me it runs fine at 70, so if 100 doesn't work I would try that as well, let me know if that fixes it

I just completed all NFS games on handhelds.
The GBA ones were pretty decent apart from the obscure Porsche Unleashed version, pretty consistent in terms of quality and decent handling but you can barely see the road and 3D graphics don't look that good on GBA, my favorite is either Most Wanted or Carbon OTC.
The DS games are also solid apart from Most Wanted which is terrible and Undercover which is kinda mediocre, Underground 2 is ok but has weird handling, Carbon and ProStreet are the best by far but Nitro is also fun.
PSP games are a mixed bag, Underground Rivals and Carbon Own the City are great spin offs with Carbon having a different sotry but the rest is really boring, especially Most Wanted and ProStreet. The Shift version is also really werid since it uses a Burnout engine.

Not that. Look at the tires of the car. I wonder what's propping up the left side since the left side tires don't seem to exist.
Yeah, I know it's actually just a tiling error, but this is on REV03.

Semi-related, but I found the RAM address that has the player's engine RPM in Senna's Super Monaco GP II. Functionally, it serves the exact same purpose as it did in the original, but the values it is working with have been all multiplied by 10. This means that 12158 in RAM translates directly to 12158 RPM in-game. It might also explain why decelerating is so much stronger and why actually braking pretty much stops you on a dime, in screwed up math.

So, now the important question. Who had the better open-wheel racing game? Ayrton Senna, or Nigel Mansell?

Glad others are enjoying this odd gem of a game. TGR's lategame used to wall me but once I got the drifting mechanics I started finding the hard turns a joy.

I'm currently trying to find the worst vehicles that can clear the highest levels of the game. Great Heights+ is the last series of races. Took a while because 3/5 top speed cars sometimes can't win races with too many straightaways and gentle turns unless you boost off ramming the random AI for the forward kick you get. The Vivant RS GT isn't even good when you get it.

The margin for error loosens on twisty tracks. AI don't behave perfectly normal but they don't rubberband and they do slow down for turns, which means you make gains if you take the turns fast and sideways instead.

Rage Racer is the mascot of this thread so if you want to give it a try, here are some quick tips:

1. Different cars manufacturers suit different tracks. Mythical Coast has medium elevations and medium turns, Gnade Esperanza is good there. Over Pass city has steep elevations, so it's better to use Lizard cars which have high torque. Lakeside Gate has steep corners - Age cars are the best at cornering. Extreme Oval (actually tri-oval) has neither, so Assoluto cars with their top speed are the best.

2. It is entirely possible to complete the game using cars less suitable for the tracks, but it's harder to do so. Except Extreme Oval and Assoluto. You won't beat rival Assoluto car on Extreme Oval without using Assoluto and you will really struggle with an Assoluto car on other tracks due to its poor cornering and mediocre torque.

3. Mastering manual transmission is a must if you want to be faster on ascents/descents and exiting drifts. MT is essential here, unlike other Ridge Racer games.

4. Never use third person camera unless you wish to hate the game. Use rear view mirror to your advantage - block rival cars if they try to overtake you. You will gain a little speed boost if they bump into your car from behind.

5. The real Rage Racer starts with Diable GP. You haven't experienced the game until you beat at least one race there.

6. Deep Drive is the best piece of music in a racing videogame.

7. Forget all these and play Rave Racer instead.

I really wish there was an arcade racing game for people who liked...racing.

As it is the realm of racing games is divided into "casual, silly fun" and "hardcore racing". The arcade-y games rarely give you a good race, just let you drive crazy and crash into stuff for a big spectacle while people wanting a solid race experience have to turn to sim games where you need good real-world driving technique (like proper apex cutting and weight transfer).

What I want is a game that doesn't try to be realistic but also gives you opponents who will fight you to the finish and require you to be smart about how you race. Still easy to get into and learn but doesn't pull any punches in terms of racing quality.

>> No.8267607

Any tips on getting gud at R4? I really want to get through all the story stuff, but even in the first map, I can't make the turns neat all the time. Is there a certain timing for the two styles?
Also, is it still possible playing on automatic?

R4 is a very simple game. MT is not needed at all. The game is mostly about memorization. Just practice the tracks and find that ideal line on each. Each track has only around a couple turns that require drifting. Most turns can be passed normally if you approach them from the right angle. Basic approaching technique applies (pic related).

PS1 High Stakes has a new simcade-ish driving physics model, a prototype of what is eventually used for PC version of NFS Porsche Unleashed (ironically, PS1 version of PU is a completely different game altogether, with none of a prequels DNA within it).

PC High Stakes just reuses a more simple NFS3 driving model with a couple of tweaks.

How do you feel about people who say that Gran Turismo isn't a racing game, but a driving game? As a kid, I always soured on it since people would ignore everything else and led to everything being all realism centric nowadays. Never actually picked it up for myself, though. Is it good, or would it disappoint someone who wants the more arcade racing experience?
Also, why is it that retro racing games are so interesting compared to Forza and all that? Couldn't put it into words

Probably won't get the answer I'm looking for but I am hoping to get some input from anyone who went through this issue. Bought a copy of Initial D Special Stage for my modded PS2 Slim, but reading that alone you can already guess what my problem is, unfortunately I didn't until I booted up the game. It kept constantly crashing 5 seconds into loading up one of the game modes and I thought I got sold a busted game. To my dismay I only just realized this is one of the various games not compatible with the slim models, or at least specifically my model, the 75000 series. I didn't spend much on it but I'm still bummed, aside from just emulating is there a way to make this game compatible with my Slim model through some other methods or am I just cucked out of a good game because I got the PS2 slim?

RR64 is not a good game, basically discount knockoff RR. PS1 RR Revolution, Rage Racer and RRT4 are much preferrable.

>>8270610
GT1 is a JDM style game about Japanese tuner scene (the same one Initial D and Wangan Midnight mangas are about), similar to many others on PS1, like Option series, Cave's Touge Max series, Shutokou Battle series (pre Tokyo Xtreme Battle), Side by Side (pre Battle Gear), and many others even more obscure. Due to it becoming huge in the West, the series went to a different direction.

Also one more thing I forgot to mention, GT1 tracks are all based around four Japanese tuner scene themes - hakone, touge, wangan and pro race track. Even though there are no point-to-point tracks for pure touge experience, the japanese origin is unmistakable. For GT2, many of the GT1 tracks were canonically moved to Germany, Great Britain etc.
