OK guys, I don't lurk here or usually play any retro games so bear with me. I have been getting major urges to go and replay Ocarina of Time. However I do not have my n64 anymore or a wii to download it from the virtual console or whatever its called. So I'm looking towards emulators.

I have used emualtors for SNES games before, but never N65. My concern is controls. Is playing a game meant for an N64 controller on a keyboard and mouse a hellish experience? I also have a xbox 360 controller, is it possible to use that?

What do you guys think? Will it be so hard to play because of the controls that I wont enjoy it at all?

>> No.824897

The 360 controller will work fine, it has enough buttons and the analog stick for fine movement control you wouldn't get with the keyboard.

>> No.824906

The XBox controller is the best option. They're fine controllers and it's fucking impossible to play some N64 games on the keyboard.

http://emulation-general.wikia.com/wiki/Recommended_N64_Plugins

Read this, and get the emulator+plugins pack there. Check out the setups guide at the bottom. Use Jabo's for maximum graphics.

You assholes make no mention of the fact that you need to a wireless receiver in order to connect a 360 controller to a PC.

...there are wired 360 controllers, you know.

Should have mentioned that your controller was wireless, then.

For general use, it is, since it has higher compatibility than Jabo's. However, OoT works just fine with either one, and Jabo's can look better since it can use AA and it has a widescreen hack.

Are you comparing it to your screenshot? Because that texture filtering looks worse than the default bilinear, but that's just my opinion.

And if you haven't noticed, my earlier screenshot is in true widescreen and has anti-aliasing, while yours doesn't.

It comes down to preference, but I detest shitty "smoothing" filters like HQ or whatever is being used in that shot. Bilinear doesn't look that great, mind you, but I'll take it over pig disgusting 2xSaI or HQ any day.

While on the subject of graphics, has anybody ever gotten Resident Evil 2 to work properly? Shit's a nightmare. Random glitches all over the place in both 1964 and PJ64.

I think I have an idea on getting it to work. Gimme a minute.

Got it working. Use the General Use setup in the wiki linked in >>824908. On the Glide64 settings, use the "Hyrbrid" buffer swapping method. I also recommend you force texture filtering to point-sampled, since bilinear looks like shit for this game.

Shit, never mind, just noticed this has issues with depth.

Welp, I had to resort to the Accuracy setup. The graphics are correct now, but it is very slow, unfortunately.

Nice. I've never been able to get it to run well. Not that I care too much since I have the Dreamcast version burned to CDRs but still good to know.

>> No.825053

Many N64 games are quite playable on keyboard. Mario 64 for example. But Ocarina of Time/Majora's mask feels weird. The character movement is sorta laggy and floaty without an analogue stick.

But if you're gonna use KB, here's my recommended settings:

A - C
B- X
Z - Z
C buttons - WASD
Shoulder buttons L and R - Q & E
Stick - Arrow Keys.
START - Enter

And you can bind the D-pad to the arrow keys on the number pad, just in case a game needs them. I find this configuration really flexable and comfortable.

I've been playing Majora's Mask with a NES controller (plus a little keyboard). It's been real fun/no problems. Just a keyboard sounds a little rough.

Fixed it! Turns out Glide64 2.0.0.1 has issues. Use Glide64 Final, and the depth issues go away. Nice!

That screenshot's from Jabo, which can't handle Resident Evil 2.

Are you using Glide64 Final, from 2012?

Also, I personally prefer Resi 2 with the bilinear filter.

>>825069
No, I was using Project64's bundled version of Glide64. Either the plugin itself has issues, or the RDB doesn't have it configured with the correct options. Using the standalone Glide64 did the trick.

>> No.825092

>>825069
The problem with the filtering is that it makes the prerendered backgrounds look like they're sectioned into square or something. Also, it makes them clash even more against the sharp, hi-res character models.
