This game broke my heart. It was supposed to be so fucking good. The lack of a weapon combo system was really disappointing as well.

Nothing will beat this fucker right here. Haven't tried 3 for years because of it.
I hid the game in the closet under the boxes so I wouldn't have to look at it.

I think it's broken in the most boring way. I've tried to beat it and just roll with it when HD collection came out and just couldn't. It's not that it's just broken, like say some shitty port or movie tie in, or like "haha it's so bad".
It's just painfully boring.
The perception of the sequel was different back then for me at least, it seemed like "we are going to do it better than ever before".

Seeing the cut stuff and that the whole intention of the game was some crazy run through classic Sega is just sad. I always hope a beta with this stuff reinstated somewhat makes it out.

Check out Warren Spector's interviews about the game, there are some juicy cuts in there, like how he wanted to get away from the "intellectual college graduate" audience that was "stifling" DX.

This was a big fucking letdown right here. The game is so fucking easy and casualized it's comical. Good for a laugh and then never to be played again.

Is this one of those messy localization fuckup situations? Because I remember Blaster Master 1 wasn't called that in Japan and its story had nothing to do with frogs.
>>8248251
Okay game on its own terms, but yeah compared to its predecessor it's very underwhelming and casualized.

Pic-related singlehandedly made Contra an irrelevant series and damaged its reputation forever. Blows my fucking mind that they still make top-down shooters in this series like Rogue Corps instead of sidescrollers to this day.

Not really. It was just a bizarre followup that was kinda miscellaneous to the original thing. Not to mention it just wasn't very good in substance nor gameplay.

The dumbing-down still would have been playable to me, even though it's less interesting and less rewarding. But feeling like I'm constantly in a small box passageway was so continuously bothersome that it killed the game on its own for me. what the fuck is wrong with you
the problem is that the levels are all fucking giant empty spaces and 90% of the enemies and bosses don't know how to actually hit you. the game designers failed to do their job if you can just double jump spam guns and beat the game fine

You clearly haven't played DMC2. Most standard enemies can be beaten by standing in place and mashing square. Hell, there's even a boss that you can beat by standing still and shooting at him. There's no reason to use your sword, ever. Guns just beat everything and you don't even need to aim them.
