Which games pushed retro systems seemingly past their limits the best? Extra points if it's not about graphical limits.

Driver 2. Mighty impressive game for PS1.

Crystalis on the NES is probably one of the only 'modern' retro games on the console, which had many arcade-style games. Bonus points for being an action game as opposed to a turn based game. Most NES games had small locales with little diversity in landscape, but this managed to have "next gen" scope for such an antiquated system. By comparison, Return of the Joker, which came out a year later, only has 7 stages. Seven!

The Metal Slader Glory (NES) team spent FOUR YEARS working on only the graphics. It looks like a CD-based game sometimes, even if only for a faint moment. It just got a new English patch.

Probably the reason it looks so impressive is because of MMC5; you'd never see random backdrops as detailed and varied as these on your typical NES game.

PAST their limits

Literally all those SNES games that camr with FX chips in the cartridge

Conker is insane, besides the 2D background it looks like a goddamn 6th gen game upscaled.

That is part of it, but not the whole story. They were using every bit of graphical power they could get out of the system to produce the CGs and cutscene animations. A ton of the actual story needed to be cut because they couldn't fit the assets for it, which I believe is why the game failed.

It's also just a VN, which is something that wasn't entirely common at the time. VNs are bare minimum effort nowadays, but for the NES this would be a flex for artistry and technology.

Planetfall, that game has so much going on that it blows the mind.

Imma say Elite
+ 1024 planets procedurally generated (same technique as >>8243458)
+ full 3d and newtonian space physics
+ first (?) "open-world" game
it's not extremely playable today but everybody should try a no-assist docking at least once

still impressed that SNES could potentially run Saturn games. not literally technologically, but they still put a Mega Man 8 sequel on there. also Street Fighter alpha

Conker is literally the most impressive game graphically on the entire system, and it doesn’t even require the expansion pak.
Conker has advanced animation, full lip syncing and facial animation, full voice acting and score (with only 64 megs to work with), capable of drawing many characters on screen (caveman club) lengthy in-engine cutscenes, lighting, huge sprawling levels, more multiplayer modes than a game has a right to have, and more.
It’s definitely a great looking and feature packed game and one of the best looking games of fifth gen, not fair at all to compare it with a 6th Gen game.

Despite higher specs and more polygons Sonic Adventures looks a lot worse than Conkers. Visual bugs everywhere like the ground disappearing during the intro-fucking-cutscene and even the lip syncing is worse. You're probably thinking of the remaster that overtook every video on the game which touched up a lot of visual bugs and the lip syncing.

You can't actually traverse Daggerfall's map on foot. Outside of named locations, the game cheats by treadmilling pre-generated areas to give you an illusion of movement. If you walk for a while and check the world map you'll see you're stuck in place.
This >>8243476 is a better example, Elite used exploits but they were actually impressive for 1984.

Wasn't Conker released after Sonic Adventure? And I 100% disagree with Conker looking good. Show a side by side gif of any random level from both games and they will say SA looks much nicer.

The BBC Micro had a lot of games that pushed its hardware to the limits for some reason.

Exile had a physics engine with realistic gravity and inertia, particle simulation and AI with line of sight vision. It had procedurally generated caverns and self modifying code. The borders of the screen were blacked out so the graphics were occupying slightly less than full screen and the lost screen space was used as extra ram for the game data.
Here's a video about the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhsFq9ZBJds

Revs also used part of the screens memory for game data but manipulated the display palette to make all the affected pixels blue as they were part of the sky. Revs was one of the first more realistic racing simulators.
Here's a nice video about Revs too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvNeGH50nuQ

That is not true. You can walk from any place to any other place. The terrain is pregenerated and not created at runtime.

As much as I love daggerfall 99.99% of that is empty space. I have high hopes that modders will one day give purpose to the expansive world. I’d love to see a group create an mmo using daggerfall unity and turning off quick travel outside of teleporting and ships/npc carriages. Encountering real people in the world would give it some meaning. Maybe have land for sale.
