What are some good mechanic or mecha based jrpgs? Zoids, Metal Max, medsbots? What else?

Do any of them do anything different? Zoids and metal max let you upgrade parts in vehicals you drive. Medabots
Let's you win new parts from battles.

Xenogears is the best JRPG ever, let alone the best mecha JRPG. Unfortunately, besides that, mecha haven't been a heavy theme in classic JRPGs. They're really abundant in SRPGs for some reason (like the already mentioned Front Mission).

MS Saga was pretty cool but my autism didn't let me customize robots because I wanted to have them be like the originals

On subject I had a friend that really liked Vanguard Bandits but I never got around to playing it. What I watch him play looked cool though.

Check out La Wares. It's a unique and charming game and there is also an English version available. It feels kind of rushed and unfinished, and leaves much more to be desired. But for what it is, it's ok.

I tried this, but was put off by the weird pre-beta look to it (as you mentioned). This is how a Final Fantasy game might look in the first 3 months of production.

Robotrek for the SNES. Buddy loaned me the game because he thought that when I said Robotech that I meant Robotek. Still a decent game. Robotech for the GBA was a decent shmup as well. The GC/PS2/Xbox games were solid as well. Also Gungriffon. SLAI and Phantom Crash if those count.
