We're using the term pretty arbitrarily in this board; "classic" would be more appropriate, but anyway it's just better to understand whatever term you use as relative, like "high definition" or "next gen".

I initially passed on the GoW trilogy, but they're actually decent action games if you crank the difficulty and having a good sense of scale is something they pulled off really well even from the first game even though OP isn't the best example.

Painkiller almost had good bosses, but they either just big dudes you dumped gunfire into, or big dudes that cant be shot until you shoot something else first.
i remembered the necrogiant being so damn hard when i played it as a kid, but after playing through it again they're really easy, might have been a bug thing because I recall adding some fixes when I played it last year.
The fight with Lucifer really got me though (never reached him as a kid). I spent a long time just shooting at him in the weird ghost hell, to the point where I started to think it was some kind of meta point, that hell is just fighting ghosts and an unkillable boss. Then I looked it up and realized you just have to get him to walk into his own meteors.

some of them were decently fun when i went back and got the card. the one for guardian requires you to kill him in 80 seconds. seemed impossible at first but you slowly learn his pattern and it's not that bad

yeah it drove me crazy. the one at the end of the Battle out of Hell expansion is a fucking pain too, you have to damage yourself with fire on these runes on the ground which will summon a rubble golem. you then have to keep the boss distracted while the golem slowly approaches and punches the boss, and then you can actually do damage to him. not that hard, just convoluted and relys on the iffy aggro AI. never played the other expansions, afaik only overdose has bosses and i doubt it fixed them.

Overdose was enjoyable, not the same atmosphere as the original game but the weapons are really creative. The worst thing about it is the main character voicelines that are always the same through the game, get annoying really fast.
Resurrection is a mess and was never finished, there is a new final boss but it sucks ass. Could have been good with a more competent dev team.
Recurring Evil and Redemption = pure garbage, do not play them.

It's old yes but to ME (not saying it's definitive) hardware made after 2000 won't belong in the same era as pre-2000 hardware. 6th gen is definitely the transition period because Dreamcast feels retro (keep in mind its main competition during its lifespan was PS1 and N64, not PS2) yet Gamecube and Xbox feel modern to me.

At no point. Are you being stupid on purpose? Are you deliberately misunderstanding the conflict here?

1. Some people consider '/vr/' to be a fixed category of games that will never change.
2. Some people consider '/vr/' to be "any game older than current by X years."
3. Some people think that the people in the first category cannot possibly have any valid or objective reason for any category to be distinct from group 2.

Group 1 is the smartest and correct.
Group 2 are generic unthinking normalfags who enjoy listening to Britney Spears and Katy Perry at the local bar's retro night.
Group 3 are drooling retards who have trouble working the toaster in their mother's kitchen.

Note that there's technically a group 4, which is people who don't give a shit at all about definitions, just want to talk about PS2 games on a slow board, and will argue as dishonestly and deceptively as necessary to get what they want.

I can't find any game by that name, and since Battle out of Hell is the name of the first Painkiller expansions I have a hunch you're thinking of a different game. It wouldn't happen to be Hellforces, would it? https://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/hellforces
Incidentally, I also remembered Dreamkiller, which I just discovered was made by the devs of Overdose (who also made the stealth game Cold War, which is news to me) https://www.mobygames.com/game/dreamkiller

Stretch Panic had one. The boss is trying to break into the room you're in, and if it does, you instantly lose.

It was unusual to see screen filling bosses on the SNES.
