Wait a fucking second, is it me or is Einhander absolutely fucking GREAT? I remember enjoying it back int he 90s, but I chalked it up to Square nostalgia. But I'm playing a whole bunch of horizontal shmups including the greats like Thunder Force IV, R-Type III, and even Gradius V, played Einhander as a joke, and I'm enjoying it MORE than any of the great shmups.

Is it me or is Einhander literally one of the best horizontal shmups out there? I don't remember it being THAT intricate and technical (the fucking graphs it paints of your performance, holy shit) as well as aesthetically impeccable.

>> No.8236610

Yes it's one of the best shmups of the 90s. Always was. It's better than Radiant Silvergun, G-Darius and R-Type Delta

It's the only good game Squaresoft's ever made, so, the latter.

It's not just you, Einhander is awesome. Came out back when Square was at its peak.

it doesn't bother me in other genres, and yet with shmups it just doesn't fancy me

To be honest, it's a bit hard to say what's there to actually listen to. The "music" seems pretty nondescript.

How did square do it? Thier output in the 90s was fucking insane

The music.
Badlands is fucking sick. Better than Thunderforce's theme.

They were bursting with ideas in the 16 bit era and couldn't quite do them all until 32-bit hit. Then FF7 was huge so they got a lot of money. Then the PS1 era especially was still pretty small scale, where most games were like 4-5 million dollar budget. So a lot of these smaller titles that don't use a lot of CGI like Einhander maybe cost like 6 million or something. With less money, less risk, thus more creativity. Now we're in an era where a new FF game is a massive investment so you can't do these creative risk taking titles anymore.

Square wasn't a studio but rather a conglomerate of several studios under the same umbrella. Square's MO during the 90's was similar to what Microsoft has been doing recently, going around buying up random indie devs, that's why they released so many games almost every year.

can I read more about this?

>> No.8238870

>>8238863
I dunno, but you can just look at what Square did with the Front Mission devs (first they published their games then they simply brought the whole company into the fold), or how they failed to buy up Quest but ended up poaching Matsuno anyway. It's also easy to see this by looking at the credits from different franchises, you'll quickly notice how there's very little overlap in the teams working on different series, they're essentially completely different studios under the same name.
