How did such a short-lived and ill-fated system get such a great catalogue?

By being a genuine arcade system in your home, with the most talented game developers in Japan being excited to work on it while capturing heart and minds in the west as well with plenty of power and thoughtful design that included internet out of the box and VMU. Everything being heightened at the turn of the millennium also contributed, we were entering the future during a time of economic optimism which of course came crashing down fast when the dot-com bubble burst.

lol, you mean two broken 3D platformers, 100 run of the mill fighting games, classic 3D experiences like the Floigan Brothers Episode 1, and like 5 actual good titles.

Mostly this. But the Dreamcast was also released a bit too early and too weak to truely compete with gen6 consoles. Half the memory of the PS2, GD-ROM being a much worse format then DVD, weaker CPU and GPU then the PS2, etc, etc. And the PS2 was the weakest in hardware compared to the GC and XBox even, so the DC was blown out hardware wise.
I'd say the DC needed 1 to 2 more years in the oven but I'm not sure Sega had the cash to even do so.

A lot of games were developed for it in a short period of time.

It was relatively easy to develop for (it was basically a Windows PC) and the game developers who made games for it had been developing 3D games for years. It came out just at the right time for many good games to be feasibly made for it in a short period of time. It was released in Japan in November of 1998. A single year marks a massive difference for technological progression in the 90's. The Sega Saturn came out November of 1994. That 4 years was a night and day difference.

The Sega Saturn did reasonably well in Japan compared to the United States. Sega could go off of its success with the Saturn and Arcade games in Japan for brand recognition.

Finally, and notably, many of its games were ports from the arcade or other platforms. Also, even games that were first released on it were made with the knowledge in mind by the developers that they could be relatively easily ported to other platforms.

If it wasn't for the compound failure of 32x and Saturn, Dreamcast could have launched a bit later with an even better lineup and thwarted Sony's sabotage via the strength of their initial system and catalogue. Instead their system was even weaker than the PS2 and was doomed due to Playstation having too great of a vice grip.

It sold 400k more units than the N64 in the smallest and least relevant market, while still being outsold by the PS1 by almost 3:1in that market, and being outsold by literally 20:1 or worse in every other market.

These. There were a few sources of dreamcast games:

1) improved ports of 5th gen
2) arcade games
3) PC games as the Windows CE system made windows ports very straightforward
4) Sega-made games

There's some overlap between these but they produced lots of quality games. It's baffling in some ways why the dreamcast did fail, I'm not going to pretend I know why. But here's a few things that didn't help:

1) Too great a focus on online when online was expensive and generally shitty (most people in europe still with 56k).
2) Their customer base gave up on them after the dismal failure of the Saturn and getting burned by other console add-ons before that.
3) They had no EA so that meant no FIFA for Europeans and no Madden for the US. As a final blow they also had no Pro-Evo, the alternative franchise to FIFA at the time.
4) No DVD player. It may seem small now, but to have a DVD player rather than VHS was a big thing back then. Having the DVD player in the console allowed people to play all of their movies and justified much of the expense of the console, another DVD player would cause more clutter and be more expensive.

This console really was ahead of its time with the online play. I need to figure out how to save VMU files to my PC so I can keep my lvl60+ Pinta's Quest save for the next time I tackle Skies of Arcadia.
