1. Is the 1080i resolution of a CRT HDTV enough for shaders to work with?
2. Is the darkening effect of shader effects too strong on the same CRT?

Experiments with my PC CRT at 1600x1200 showed good results with Triad size 1 or 2 in CRT-Royale.

Hey everyone for the past couple years I have been using a Diamond Pro 2070 SB I found on facebook marketplace for fortunately cheap as my primary monitor with a GTX 1080 TI, using a displayport to VGA adapter, the Delock 62967 and it has worked great. After upgrading to my new card I received today, a MSI RTX 3080 TI, and plugging in with the same adapter I'm finding that periodically, and particularly when the GPU is under load, the entire monitor starts flickering like this for an instant and coming back or less frequently losing signal entirely for just a moment. This never happened at all prior to this upgrade and I'm wondering if anyone knows what could be the cause and how to resolve this?

First thing to do is just reseat the GPU and all connections.
Then do a driver uninstall and reinstall.
There's a chance that will fix the issue.
If that doesn't work then try your old GPU and see if the issue is still occurring. If it is then it's not the GPU doing it.
If it is the new GPU see if it's doing it on a monitor without the adapter.
If it's not then there's maybe some incompatibility between the GPU and the adapter.

Some time ago, I saw two guys carrying a CRT down the sidewalk from my window. They carried it all the way to the dumpster and there was already an old bum waiting for them. They placed the TV on the ground and went away, then the bastard started trying to get his filthy hands inside. Ultimately, he lifted the TV up and threw it on the ground, destroying the back and exposing the insides. He took some wires and coils and went away. All that for a fucking 5 dollars or whatever.
I don't even know what condition the TV was in, but it infuriated me for the whole week. I would probably had intervened and maybe even took the CRT home with me if it worked, but it was 7AM in winter, so I was sleepy as fuck and probably wouldn't get there before it got destroyed.

Ah, what I meant was I've recapped some of the board, all the biggest caps, caps that looked suspicious, and caps along the vertical drive circuit. I have most caps for the board although I ordered the wrong ones for the .47mf of which there's like 18 so I'll need to get new ones of those to do the full recap. Hello bros. I just scored a Sony PVM-9045QM off Facebook marketplace for free (pic related). Anything I should know? They said it was working but I can't connect anything to it yet. When I turn it on I get a red, blue, and green stripe at the top of the screen. Nothing else. If I toggle the 16:9 switch it will disappear and reappear. Is it broken? I ordered some BNC to RCA adapters off ebay fingers crossed it works.

The frequently posted suggestion to use a superwide resolution + "a simple scanline filter" is outdated imo.
2048x1536 or even higher resolutions give more resolution per simulated raster line to work with allowing you to simulate screen types which range further away from the natural look of a PC CRT.

That's a decent tube if it's scratch free. CRT's are pretty tough. Just don't power them on when they're wet. Let them dry for a good while before testing them out if they got wet. Worst thing for a CRT is a scratch on the glass. Can't fix that.

Extra magic, they're doing two different things. The VI filter blur you can disable with patches makes the bigger difference out of the two but the HDMI mod de-blur does a bit too. Both at once is basically what you wish N64 RGB normally looked like.

Genesis stuff often has decent amount of unused raster, as you're seeing on the left, so you might want to see how a few other games, and especially other games on other systems look before you go adjusting things, since different consoles and different games are going to use different amounts of raster and be centered a bit differently. Maybe, when I reattached the neckboard's ground clip I actually clipped it onto a different spot on the ground strap (the original spot frayed slightly when I removed it last time and I don't want to risk breaking it)

In RetroArch under CG shaders > CRT there is a shader called CRT-Royal+tvout+Image-Adjustments.
This has been my favorite shader over time after trying other variations.
Make sure you are using a vertical integer scale, even if you have to crop a few lines of pixels to get it. Horizontal is not as important.
Once active, you should go into shader parameters and reduce diffusion weight and halation weight to 0. These are glow effects your PC CRT will provide for you. Also remove the border.
Next thing to change is mask type and triad size desired. I tend to like mask type 0 on my dot triad monitor, and triad size 4. If your monitor can't do 2048x1536 you should use triad size 1 or 2 at 1600x1200.
The other settings you can play around with and get a feeling for.
Experiment with other shaders like the GTU shaders and CRT-Guest-Venom. There is an advanced version available on the libretro forums. Eventually you will settle on something you like after you get tired of fiddling with it.

To get the effect on Dracula's eyes on the left you need to turn on the composite video switch in CRT-Royale+tvout+image-adjustments and adjust luma and chroma resolution to where you want it to be.
Note that this shader doesn't introduce dot crawl and fringing with the composite switch. You'll need a different shader for that if the emulator doesn't support additional filters.

Read a little watch some yt videos and don’t spend too much just because there is a listing atm in your area.

That looks like it's almost definitely the same as the Gamestop and Pelican branded HD System Selectors internally. They're just dumb switches, so there won't be any issue with input delay or otherwise being introduced.
As for visual quality, they aren't shielded, so if you place them somewhere with a lot of electrical noise (on top of an amp, some TVs, near a bunch of power cords/wallwarts, they can pick up some noise that way. If you can avoid that, they don't introduce any loss in PQ in and of themselves though, no.

You can mess around with the focus knob safely enough, but be careful with brightness. My Sony expects specific voltage which has to be set according to the manual, otherwise it starts blinking red lights at me.

FYI, if anyone is interested in duplicating crt-royale almost exactly with the ReShade port (interlacing is busted), you must combine it with something like 'scanlines-abs.fx' shader (it's on github).
You can actually control scan line thickness easily this way, which makes it useful on low-res monitors.

I ended up just setting everything on the display menu to the default and adjusting the knobs based on that. I turned the focus until it was just sharp enough that turning it further didn't affect the clarity, and I tried turning the brightness knob until it was around "just bright enough", which looked fine on my Wii but later when I ended up hooking my PS2 up the main menu screen was like just black so I should have set it higher I guess.

For now I just increased the brightness via the display menu higher until the PS2 looked good. I wonder if it's fine to leave it that way or if I should open the TV up again to adjust the brightness directly on the flyback. Not sure what difference that would make in the long run.

I was looking for a supplier of bulk isopropyl alcohol (best I could find in my shithole backwater city was 1L without paying an arm and a leg in freight from places that actually matter) and while searching esoteric cleaning product supplier websites saw things like "video AV lead contact cleaner" in amongst it others, which gave me pause to think maybe there was something less harsh on aging plastics or otherwise better for the job.

I love my CRT but less for anything inherent to the big fuckoff heavy cunt of a box that needs retarded amounts of maintenance, and more for the way it paints a gorgeous image across its screen; the kinda 'magic eye picture' way the gaps between phosphors and scanlines disrupts the visuals on low-res content, with the way my brain fills in those blanks, to make it feel like there's more detail behind the picture than there actually is.

Someday my CRT will die though, and the technology is never coming back, so I'm glad people are trying to recreate that aforementioned pseduo-HD'ifying effect the analogue entropy instills; between the warmth of the tube, the convergence and geometry, the blooming rounded pixel-dots, and the filter of the mask- all that comes together to instill quality to a ~240p picture that makes old games look as though they belong on a big screen.
We're not quite there yet with our current FPGA tech, to get this kinda content looking the way it should on a modern TV, but the current 'next' generation of scalers (tink5x, pixel fx morph, OSSC pro) gives me hope I wont be too upset when my tube conks.

Of course I knew CRT and magnets don't get along but I didn't think the effect would be this bad. I know in the late 90s I had a cheap set of polk tower speakers next to my CRT and didn't have any issues. Gonna try the tuna can over the magnet coil thing and see if that helps.

Modern PC games would be best to take advantage of it since it's easier to get them to display in 4:3.
Doom Eternal, Project Cars 2, and the new Resident Evil games should all look incredible on it.
Only negative is this monitor might have the G2 brightness issue that needs correcting. But it's worth fixing if it does.

I used to have large speakers right next to my CRT monitor. I was able to fix the color issue by using degauss which would presumably magnetize the shadow mask in such a way to oppose the speakers magnetism. Since tvs don't have degauss you will need to get a degaussing wand.

I think the problem personally is that some games just expect a lot of overscan while others expect a full screen, and there really isn't a balance for that. S-Video won't look that much better over composite due to a few of the console's filters, namely anti-aliasing and video interface (VI) blur; and as far as I know, all N64 games pretty much had it. One way to get around AA is with an Gameshark to turn it off, but some people get put off by the amount of dithering on some games (it's not as bad on a CRT). VI can only be turned off if you're specifically using the N64RGB's RGB signal (won't work in S-Video) or had the console modded to support HDMI. tl;dr If your monitor supports RGB, it's a pretty noticeable jump, especially with the VI de-blur enabled. I'll see if I can take any decent pictures of my BVM.
