This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related. Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

The two important questions are:

1. Is the 1080i resolution of a CRT HDTV enough for shaders to work with?
2. Is the darkening effect of shader effects too strong on the same CRT?

Experiments with my PC CRT at 1600x1200 showed good results with Triad size 1 or 2 in CRT-Royale.

Hey everyone for the past couple years I have been using a Diamond Pro 2070 SB I found on facebook marketplace for fortunately cheap as my primary monitor with a GTX 1080 TI, using a displayport to VGA adapter, the Delock 62967 and it has worked great. After upgrading to my new card I received today, a MSI RTX 3080 TI, and plugging in with the same adapter I'm finding that periodically, and particularly when the GPU is under load, the entire monitor starts flickering like this for an instant and coming back or less frequently losing signal entirely for just a moment. This never happened at all prior to this upgrade and I'm wondering if anyone knows what could be the cause and how to resolve this?

>> No.8197673

>>8197631
First thing to do is just reseat the GPU and all connections.
Then do a driver uninstall and reinstall.
There's a chance that will fix the issue.
If that doesn't work then try your old GPU and see if the issue is still occurring. If it is then it's not the GPU doing it.
If it is the new GPU see if it's doing it on a monitor without the adapter.
If it's not then there's maybe some incompatibility between the GPU and the adapter.

Those people deserve a whole another circle in hell.
Some time ago, I saw two guys carrying a CRT down the sidewalk from my window. They carried it all the way to the dumpster and there was already an old bum waiting for them. They placed the TV on the ground and went away, then the bastard started trying to get his filthy hands inside. Ultimately, he lifted the TV up and threw it on the ground, destroying the back and exposing the insides. He took some wires and coils and went away. All that for a fucking 5 dollars or whatever.
I don't even know what condition the TV was in, but it infuriated me for the whole week. I would probably had intervened and maybe even took the CRT home with me if it worked, but it was 7AM in winter, so I was sleepy as fuck and probably wouldn't get there before it got destroyed.
Thanks for reading my blog.

Very good to know, and I think even better results could be done with fine tweaking of the shaders to use faint void lines that will blend in with the raster lines via the natural bloom of the real CRT at 480p.
With 1080i you'd have multiple lines per virtual raster line to work with to vary amplitude based on pixel brightness. I just worry about combing artifacts.
If I could just get my PC CRT to display an interlaced resolution.

>> No.8199161

I get that. That doesn't mean a 36" TV is going for under $13. I'm not denying that retards just threw them away or gave them to family members for nothing, but if you went into a thrift or pawn shop, those TVs were not selling for $13, even then. Hello fellow aussie bro. Depends on how far is it to go pick it up and how much the price is. That model doesn't look like anything special though. If it's free, close by and you want a CRT may as well grab it. You can always advertise it for free and get rid of it when you find a nicer one. Personally I choose to hold out and only go for Trinitrons. If I'm going to store a big ass CRT may as well be a Sony. (Then again I've been called elitist.)

The frequently posted suggestion to use a superwide resolution + "a simple scanline filter" is outdated imo.
2048x1536 or even higher resolutions give more resolution per simulated raster line to work with allowing you to simulate screen types which range further away from the natural look of a PC CRT.

You'll need to open it up to gain access to the bank of pots that adjust geometry and the like. Page 18 if it doesn't automatically go to it.
Video Phase is going to control horizontal centering, and H-Size for Horizontal Size.
Genesis stuff often has decent amount of unused raster, as you're seeing on the left, so you might want to see how a few other games, and especially other games on other systems look before you go adjusting things, since different consoles and different games are going to use different amounts of raster and be centered a bit differently. It all becomes a balancing act of finding a happy medium, or going insane adjusting stuff constantly.

Opposite, there's waviness with no signal but it's fine when I have something hooked up (At least my Wii is I haven't tried checking anything else or like the RF input)

The first pic is the OSD with no inputs, and the second is my Wii showing a test pattern (I don't think the OSD was wavy while the Wii was running also so it's probably not just the OSD).

This is weird as hell but I guess worst case scenario If I can't work out what I messed up I really don't give a shit if there's a picture issue when I'm not using the TV.

People keep saying cheap broadcast monitors dried up but they're still around in bigger cities. Just get creative with your search terms. Anyone using "crt" or "retro" in their ads likely has an idea of what they can get for their stuff. Also you can cold call people with decent results. I cold called some prop house and ended up with a dozen 20" monitors.
The other anon is right though, late consumer grade tvs are perfectly fine for gaming stuff and are still free or cheap in most places.
I think prices for high end monitors have peaked. It seems like flippers pushed a little too high and their ads stay up for much longer now.

It looks that way because the TVLine count is very high and the dot pitch is very fine.
You were never supposed to see pronounced blank lines like that. They used CRTs that sharp(BVMs/PVMs) for editing but they always used a much less fine/sharper consumer set at the same time to demo the final product. They didn't want their game to have jailbars on top.

Those FF6/SoTN screenshots are from ruuupu1 on twitter. The CRT is a Sony KV-14AF1
Judging by the pics it's a fairly low TVL count trinitron hence no noticeable scanlines

https://twitter.com/ruuupu1/status/1356955170551156739?lang=en

According to him to emulate this CRT properly you would need 7416x5405 resolution.

Emulating lower TVL CRT's is actually harder than high TVL BVM's and such where you can just put some dumb fat scanlines and call it a day.

you can't replicate that exact look on a vga monitor, but good news is that unless you're a fucking retard that zooms in to see the individual phosphors you won't really notice the difference
just use a super wide resolution (2560x480@60hz is good) and one of the tvout+interlacing+ntsc presets
use 3-phase/256px for consoles that output 256 pixels wide (snes, ps1) and 2-phase/320px for consoles that output 320 pixels wide (sega shit)
svideo or composite is up to you
adjust the "monitor gamma" and "contrast" options afterwards to recover the lost brightness

>> No.8218158

my bad, I meant monitor gamma and saturation
both inside shader parameters
also you're pretty much stuck with retroarch if you plan to do this

>> No.8218160

>>8218005
In RetroArch under CG shaders > CRT there is a shader called CRT-Royal+tvout+Image-Adjustments.
This has been my favorite shader over time after trying other variations.
Make sure you are using a vertical integer scale, even if you have to crop a few lines of pixels to get it. Horizontal is not as important.
Once active, you should go into shader parameters and reduce diffusion weight and halation weight to 0. These are glow effects your PC CRT will provide for you. Also remove the border.
Next thing to change is mask type and triad size desired. I tend to like mask type 0 on my dot triad monitor, and triad size 4. If your monitor can't do 2048x1536 you should use triad size 1 or 2 at 1600x1200.
The other settings you can play around with and get a feeling for.
Experiment with other shaders like the GTU shaders and CRT-Guest-Venom. There is an advanced version available on the libretro forums. Eventually you will settle on something you like after you get tired of fiddling with it.

To get the effect on Dracula's eyes on the left you need to turn on the composite video switch in CRT-Royale+tvout+image-adjustments and adjust luma and chroma resolution to where you want it to be.
Note that this shader doesn't introduce dot crawl and fringing with the composite switch. You'll need a different shader for that if the emulator doesn't support additional filters.

What model is your PC monitor?

Well what do you want, a consumer or professional CRT? Are you Europoor or amerifat or another 3rd worlder?

If europoor consumer crt will eat RGB inputs through Scart, some higher end models will also have component images will be pretty much identical.
If non euro get one and rgb mod it.

For professional crt get anything of these brands Sony, Panasonic, Ikegami, Mitsubishi, Barco (only if you have the manual, impossible to work on W/o), NEC
They vary greatly but are the very best CRTs made. But some can be a bitch to adjust and/or are very old and will most likely have parts inside that are going to die in the near future.

Curved/non curve is preference , trinitrons (a Sony brand) is curved in one dimension, most others in two. Some have a stronger curve some are more flat or even completely.

FYI, if anyone is interested in duplicating crt-royale almost exactly with the ReShade port (interlacing is busted), you must combine it with something like 'scanlines-abs.fx' shader (it's on github).
You can actually control scan line thickness easily this way, which makes it useful on low-res monitors.

I ended up just setting everything on the display menu to the default and adjusting the knobs based on that. I turned the focus until it was just sharp enough that turning it further didn't affect the clarity, and I tried turning the brightness knob until it was around "just bright enough", which looked fine on my Wii but later when I ended up hooking my PS2 up the main menu screen was like just black so I should have set it higher I guess.

For now I just increased the brightness via the display menu higher until the PS2 looked good. I wonder if it's fine to leave it that way or if I should open the TV up again to adjust the brightness directly on the flyback. Not sure what difference that would make in the long run.

Is it bad to keep a CRT turned on when you're not using it if no signal is being transmitted and nothing is displaying on screen? For example, is it a bad idea to leave it on overnight just to save having to wait the few moments it takes to warm up when I turn it on the next day?

Static will, obviously, but how is a blank screen supposed to do that? And when I say blank, I mean with nothing being displayed, not the blue that some sets display when an input with no signal is selected. I was more worried about components other than the screen phosphors.

Found a remote for my CRT but it's gross as fuck.
Kind of a weird question overall, but with regards to retro tech (especially for electronics that need to be disassembled for repair) when cleaning plastics for remotes, controllers, console chassis/cases is there a particular type of cleaning agent I should be using? I know to use isopropyl alcohol for the PCB, but would dish detergent be fine for the rest?

Thanks.
I was looking for a supplier of bulk isopropyl alcohol (best I could find in my shithole backwater city was 1L without paying an arm and a leg in freight from places that actually matter) and while searching esoteric cleaning product supplier websites saw things like "video AV lead contact cleaner" in amongst it others, which gave me pause to think maybe there was something less harsh on aging plastics or otherwise better for the job.
But logically, most people wash dishes barehanded without major problems so it can't be that abrasive. Certainly not on plastic, although maybe rubber. Anyway thanks again for clarifying.

>making sure they're totally dry before reassembling
Yeah, I can imagine that causing issues if you're careless enough to do such a thing.

probably a dumb question I don't come here often, but I'm looking for some sort of converter to pass VGA from a tower computer into a CRT with RCA with as little lag as possible, tho some small lag is fine. are there any standard devices to do this?

>> No.8222992

There's no good standard for that conversion, unfortunately. I think the arcade crowd makes some. Just be sure before you buy that the input and output resolutions match what you want; you will most likely run into a lot of downscalers that only accept hd signals. You don't want those because getting 240p could be trouble, so make sure the converter accepts 15kHz

I love my CRT but less for anything inherent to the big fuckoff heavy cunt of a box that needs retarded amounts of maintenance, and more for the way it paints a gorgeous image across its screen; the kinda 'magic eye picture' way the gaps between phosphors and scanlines disrupts the visuals on low-res content, with the way my brain fills in those blanks, to make it feel like there's more detail behind the picture than there actually is.

Someday my CRT will die though, and the technology is never coming back, so I'm glad people are trying to recreate that aforementioned pseduo-HD'ifying effect the analogue entropy instills; between the warmth of the tube, the convergence and geometry, the blooming rounded pixel-dots, and the filter of the mask- all that comes together to instill quality to a ~240p picture that makes old games look as though they belong on a big screen.
We're not quite there yet with our current FPGA tech, to get this kinda content looking the way it should on a modern TV, but the current 'next' generation of scalers (tink5x, pixel fx morph, OSSC pro) gives me hope I wont be too upset when my tube conks.

This specific model. It's probably a GDM series Trinitron.
Modern PC games would be best to take advantage of it since it's easier to get them to display in 4:3.
Doom Eternal, Project Cars 2, and the new Resident Evil games should all look incredible on it.
Only negative is this monitor might have the G2 brightness issue that needs correcting. But it's worth fixing if it does.

S-Video won't look that much better over composite due to a few of the console's filters, namely anti-aliasing and video interface (VI) blur; and as far as I know, all N64 games pretty much had it. One way to get around AA is with an Gameshark to turn it off, but some people get put off by the amount of dithering on some games (it's not as bad on a CRT). VI can only be turned off if you're specifically using the N64RGB's RGB signal (won't work in S-Video) or had the console modded to support HDMI. This video contains goes into better detail. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDiHgKil8AQ

It should "just work", I think. The interlacing and flickering at 1080i is hard to see, and the number of fake scanlines that make up each real raster line should be far enough apart from number of real raster lines to not cause an issue.

But it may be that some sort of anti-flickering mitigation would need to be created.

since you're starting out, just get any old tv you can find. Do you have any consoles? It's difficult to display your computer on a tv, especially if you don't have vga. If you plan on getting a crt I would not recommend trying to emulate from a computer to a tv.
As for monitors, monitor just means generally not having a tv tuner, so nowadays it hardly matters. A 'pvm' or 'broadcast' monitor refers to professional equipment from tv studios and such meant to display sharper images to keep finer details. People like using them for gaming but they've grown expensive and memed to death. A vga or pc monitor is meant to connect to a computer, and those monitors cannot display the 15kHz standard definition images that old tv's do and that old consoles run at, as such they are also very tricky to use for retro gaming.
this website https://www.retrorgb.com/ might help you understand a little better to make your own decision, but it sounds like you want to emulate, and in my opinion you might as well keep using your lcd if you are going to emulate

I have a small VGA CRT monitor and a Tendak HDMI to VGA converter, with a small NUC coming in the mail Friday.

What resolution do I output? Is there a way to have the ability to hot swap between the CRT and a modern display?

Someone said RetroArch automatically does this, but that the MAME core lags by a frame.

Will I need to save various ini's and swap them whenever I switch displays for each emulator I use if not using RetroArch?

I was hoping to use a front end like Attract Mode and pick and choose my emulators.

Sorry for the long question.

But a higher end one, which is the point
The Trinitron is too sharp for 240p and better for 480i/p sources than for 240p

>That's not what jailbars are..
I was being facetious but the point is that obviously devs didn't intend for their games to have very pronounced scanlines
The common TVs that everyone had in 1997 were much less sharper and they aimed for that

Really blank lines like that are a defect(but preferable to upscaling).
The ideal for low res like 240p is coarse mask with a high dot pitch so that you don't see the lines at all or even barely.

FF7 is not supposed to look sharp. The models clearly were meant to look smooth(albeit blurry due to low resolution) and they looked smooth in a shitty ass blurry low-end CRT, the jaggies weren't as noticeable as in that Trinitron. Even SGI Workstations could only produce graphics so fine for the PSX so a shitty CRT hid some of the jaggies in PSX games.

You have a fundamentally wrong understanding of how this shit actually works.
Your brain doesn't actually fill anything(obviously).
In addition to that a typical CRT from the early 90s barely has any scanlines.

As for the gaps between phosphors there's actually less gaps between them then there is between individual pixels in modern HD/4K TV's.
In any case you can't even see the phosphors unless you have a microscope.

To replicate a CRT phosphor mask you need 8K(4:3 8K so 5000+ pixels vertical).

The shaders have been there for years it's just a matter of display technology catching up.
As soon as 8K MicroLED Displays with fuckton of brightness come out the quest is practically over. Only thing left would be recreating the curvedness of the CRT screen(doable with how flexible MicroLEDs are) and maybe there is something to the various glass used in CRTs and how they impact the image which I don't think has ever been studied carefully.
