N64 wrastling is great
Wrestling games as a genre peaked with SYM and HCTP and nothing has even got close since, tragic.

>> No.8232285

I think the n64 wrestling titles up to wwf no mercy are the pinnacle simply because the control system thq etc designed was so easy to pick up. All the games since then just never recaptured that feel: instant fun with friends, easy to learn, difficult to master. They did smash bros before that was thing.

I remember my friends and I hosted so many tournament parties for games like this because they were so easy that even girls got into it.

I like world tour felt more like a Japanese wrestling game. If you can emulate, check out Virtual Pro Wrestling. There's an English patch and the roster is gigantic.

Wrestling games are indicative of the videogame industry in general. For the most part every genre of gaming has gotten worse in the last 20 years.

>mostly 'licensed game' style trash barely even trying to simulate the real thing in the 80s
>git gud as fuck in the mid 90s
>still mostly arcadey into the early 00s
>got reasonably realistic by the early 00s but not so far where it became unfun
>oh shit nigger what are you doing as soon as you hit the 360 generation
>only indie games and mods are salvation for the entire genre from then until now
it maps neatly

Yup. No Mercy had more options but WM2000 ran at a better frame rate which is why I prefer that one.

For me the core gameplay of No Mercy was what made it so good. I was honestly surprised going back to WM2000 and seeing how many mechanics were just missing in comparison. There was a pretty big leap from World Tour to Revenge, and very little from Revenge to WM2000. When No Mercy hit it was like everything was finally fully realized, at least that's how it is in hindsight. It all felt like a pretty natural evolution at the time.

This is the first N64 thread where I can't really talk shit. Personally I prefer Revenge but I had a lot of fun playing World Tour at my mates place and bought Revenge for that reason.

No Mercy was my favorite until I played VPW2, but it's still so close. No Mercy has ground specials, the better weapon system, and backstage areas, and ladder match; but VPW2 has better reversals, the shoot fighting system, and super finishers. If VPW2 had women, itd be perfect

I fucked around with an emulated version a few years ago. Very interesting game, I wonder if HNG64 emulation has improved, I'd love to revisit it.

Garouden Breakblow for the PS2 also has a good kakutougi/early mma type vibe

The Sega developed AJPW games also have a nice fighty type vibe, Not!Rickson Gracie is even in Giant Gram 2000!
