I've been replaying some 4th gen shmups and action games, specifically Thunder Force IV and Shinobi III, and I've been wondering: which styles are these games' soundtracks imitating? I can never pinpoint what this music sounds like (because I really don't know 60s-90s music). Castlevania 68k too, what style of music is this?

Shinobi III

Thunder Force IV

Load screen BGM from Akumajo Dracula 68k (linked is the Adventure Rebirth version)

All these tracks seem to be in a similar style of music. It's not unique to video games or anything, is it?

Most of the japanese action and arcade soundtracks of that era were inspired by j-fusion and other jazz-rock variants. I like how many of them also had plenty of slap bass samples.

The Shinobi 3 soundtrack as a whole seems like a combination of traditional Japanese folk music combined with techno elements.
Thunder Force IV's composition style seems to combine elements from Heavy Metal, Speed Metal, Trash Metal and Jungle music. The actual genesis audio gives it a Techno camouflage.
The track from Castlevania seems like a baroque composition with a slight New jack swing influence.

Shinobi and Castlevania examples literally have j-fusion beat.
You're correct on Thunder Force though.

So, you're saying Thunder Force is just metal? Literally chiptune metal?
Now, j-fusion sounds interesting.

Wow, WTF would they do that? It's aged like milk, and I'm pretty sure the style was already spoiled when these games were new.

Don't you think this music sound pretty good even today?

I'm sorry, I was mistaken about the music we were talking about. I'm thinking PlayStation era. That being said I don't like the Castlevania music that's posted above.

If you say so. Incidentally, it's not from a Playstation game. The original game was on Sharp 68k, and the track above is from the remix from an altogether different Castlevania on the Wii.

I realize that. I don't like that remix. Not sure what it sounded like on the 68k.

There are a bunch because your Sharp could have had a number of synthesizers installed. Then there's the PlayStation port version (Castlevania Chronicles), and the port of Rondo of Blood on the PSP also had a version of it - I guess because it also had a Chronicles subtitle, logically linking it to the Playstation port.

Here are all of them, the first three being Sharp x68000 originals.

The only good new one is the PSP. The Roland SC55 sounds very nice.

I'm no that guy but that's how Thunder Force IV comes across to me, yeah. It's like metal mixed with jazz fusion and it sounds fantastic. You would probably love Japanese fusion music; I know I do. Check out Masayoshi Takanaka and Kazumi Watanabe's music.
Here's some other great examples of similar sounding game tunes:

The Sound Canvas line is great, I agree. My favorite would have to be the SC-88 Pro.

I got the rackmount version of the SC-88, the M-GS64, a while ago. Haven't messed with it yet. Been enjoying the Yamaha MU-100R. I still can't believe how much better it sounds than the MU-90.
