God Tier
8, 4, 5, Mega Man and Bass

Good Tier
5, 6, 3

Okay Tier
7

Won't Play It Tier
1, 2, Soccer, fighting game

The other games are NOTRETRO so I shan't be discussing them. I think 2 is a really good game for its time (set a standard) but there's not enough going on with it to hold my interest. Whereas 8 can be played a bit differently every time thanks to your upgrade choices, making it kind of like the MMX games with some hidden stuff throughout the stages. And unlike MMX, you can still find non-cheating upgrades in the last stages. 7 is like this too, but there's something about it that turns me off, and I don't think the music is up to par. I might give it another try some day.

If we wanted to compromise and say what game is the best NES Mega Man, I'd go with 4.

I think sliding and charging add interesting dynamics to Mega Man, which is just jumping and shooting otherwise. Now, you can make a pretty interesting MM game if the weapons add new dimensions to the gameplay, but usually they don't, especially with MM1 and 2.

If I could change anything about the series in general, it would be eliminating the more boring weapons. Every weapon should have some interesting property, but some of them are "shoot a snake that goes along the ground" or "it's mini tornadoes that fly upward" or "it's a barrier that does fuckall damage when you get close to an enemy" or "it explodes".

My favorites were 4 and 5 (can't quite seem to choose). I always felt that slide and charge really felt like crucial additions to the formula. I could definitely stomach 3 and there were parts of 2 that I really liked even if there were some really awkward parts especially in the Wily parts. 1, I could never get into. It was too rough around the edges.

78 are fine, but to me seemed a bit stale compared to the good parts of the X series.

Tezuka created Astro Boy. Anon seems to be suggesting MM is the inverse of Astro Boy, like how an upside down cross on a heavy metal album is the inverse of the Christian symbol.
>>Grating indefinite amateurish sprite-work
Self-explanatory.
>>Gatcha Game Iconography
Seems to have mispelled gacha, or deliberately made a typo so it suggests "gotcha". Seems to be saying the "icons" of the game, such as the portraits of the robot masters, looks like modern day gacha, and is therefore of lame quality.
>>Proto-Slysoy Disenfranchisement peddled as NEET/ entertainment/Herbivore Powerplay
Basically, he's saying it's R*ddit. This one is complicated. It's kind of referring to how gamers of the 90s were sort of edgy, and he's saying it planted the seeds so to speak of today's "onions" gamers. Think YouTube.
>>Neo netouyo hangups: scene schizophrenia and meme dialogue
Netto-uyoku or Net uyoku is right-wing Japanese social media. I didn't know that was a thing. He's saying Mega Man represents Japanese conservatism, but it's schizophrenic, meaning it's "seeing" shit that ain't there. He's saying the ideals are misplaced.
>>Meta-Structure syndrome (refusing to build narrative structure is just as problematic as indulging in See: Proto Man)
He's saying the series is refusing to nail down a definitive plot for the series over all, often using Proto Man's appearances as a cocktease about what could be.
>>Stoicism as social currency inverted through solipsistic Zero fetish
I'm too tired to explain this one. Basically, Mega Man represents misplaced stoicism which turned into how Zero from the X series behaves: stoic, but juvenile.

3 had
1) needle man and shadow man, two fun and challenging buster-only bosses
2) slide introduced (a simple and interesting movement mechanic)
3) rush introduced (much cooler than the Items of 2)
4) protoman introduced (goofy but leaves an impact)
5) great music
6) docman (personally i the extra stages and robot master patterns)
the main complaint i have is that wily is too easy

a common complaint of later games is the introduction of the charge shot which, unlike the slide, completely changes the mechanics because it's advantageous to always be charging. moreover, the charging sound and flashing palette are garish and annoying and masks instruments in the generally good music the series is known for.

I really don't get why people love 3 so much. It's stages are solid and generally quite good but the slowdown and terrible stages in the second half like the Doc Robot and Wily stages just make it feel like one of the weaker nes games.

For me the peak of the series was the first 5 Megaman X games, Megaman & Bass, (SNES) and 2 and 3 for the NES with 4, 5, 6 and 9, 10, and 11 close behind.

I'm not very fond of either Megaman Legends game, and I think most can agree that Megaman X took a hit as a series after Megaman X6. (Megaman X7 was a 3D game not done right while Megaman X8, being a side-scroller again, was a "redemption" of sorts.)

I deliberately didn't include the 6 Gameboy games, which are solid with the exception of 2, since the tier would be too crowded and lose focus. Likewise for Xtreme on GBC, the Zero/ZX series, Battle Network/Starforce series, and the portable remakes. (Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X on PSP.) That leaves Megaman & Bass on Wonderswan, which is one of the worse portable games in the series.

I recommend this tier maker, it's the best I found so far, it's quite complete (though it is missing Megaman Soccer!) and good consistent images.

i think i'm in the minority on the doc robots, but i understand. i can't buster-only all of them, and i'm not sure if it's even possible (airman comes to mind). some changes to the game were made that makes them harder to beat. they are also too tall, which makes evasion harder for some. the levels being rehashes doesn't get me, thought, because i'm generally impressed by how much they fit onto an NES cartridge.

i really like MM9 and don't miss the slide at all because the level design doesn't require it.

Who cares about Roll
This is a series with great characters like Zero, Ciel, Dr Weil, Roll CASKETT, etc but the fascination is for a side character who I believe only had any dialogue in MM8
