technically inferior ports that were still based and/or soulful

I mean it was a totally fine way to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles on the family W95 PC if you weren't a Sega console kid.
Funny to found out as well that the "replacement" songs that were used in this release were the actual original songs with the MJ-based tracks replacing them.

But that one is objectively cringe and soulless

It's a fine version. People mostly complain about the MIDI soundtrack, but I think it's just nostalgia faggotry or people using a shit sound card.

This was how I first beat OoT and how I first played the other 3. Yeah MM's emulation was trash but I'm glad this exists

Doom 2 on the GBA. Kinda slow, had the green blood and censored gore, and the AI was nearsighted, but compared to most other console ports of Doom of its era, it's remarkably complete. All the levels are there, all the monsters are there, they just make some trims and changes in a few places for performance, the two biggest maps are each plain split into two, rather than butchering them to make them fit the constraints.

With the GBA SP coming out, you had a passable port of Doom 2 which fit in your pocket, which was actually quite impressive in the early 2000s.

This is what got me into the series proper. Kinda lucked out too since originally I got the PC version of Sonic CD but it didn't work on our family computer, so we exchanged it for this.

I went on to still enjoy Sonic CD when I picked it up years later but this right here was undeniably the superior package. The music is apparently its own can of worms, but I can't say I was bothered having had no other reference.

a truly formative gaming experience for me.

Still have my copy of this. Enjoyed the bonus stages a lot, especially the song that played for them.

I assume OoT on this was the same as it was as the version that has the Master Quest addition. Honestly my favorite way to play OoT. N64 controllers just suck compared and the 3DS version loses charm in a lot of areas.

GCMQ is the best way to play.

I got this as a kid. The disk should still be somewhere in the house. Not so sure if it's still in good enough shape to be useable though.

Also got Sonic R but I really don't remember what happened to that since it's been 20 years.

The Dreamcast version had 8 player online multiplayer in 2001. Some of the larger maps chugged a bit though. It also supported KBAM.

Quake 3 on the DC is a much smoother experience, but is limited to 4 players. It's still playable online to this day though, which is pretty cool.
