Was there ever such a thing as a PC-98 demoscene? I don't know if Japan ever had anything like that, or if Western demosceners would care enough about this system, but I can hope. Given the system's arresting high-resolution low-color graphics and orgasmic FM sound I think it's fair to say that a well-made PC-98 demo would be nothing short of breathtaking.

I know nothing about this system aside from what I've seen in screenshots and heard in music clips on youtube, but it basically seems like the purest expression of early-90s aesthetics anywhere.

American tastes don't influence what anime is made at all. Anime is made to sell BDs and merchandise for ridiculous prices to a reasonably small number of japs and to advertise other media.

Nevertheless some quality anime is made nowadays alongside a slew of garbage, just like always.

This isn't true. Since the mid-naughts or so, Japan has viewed anime as a cultural product and made sure it turns out a certain way. It's not just American tastes, but other foreign markets as well.

Interesting. I know that Yamaha FM chips are pretty popular with general retro enthusiasts and a lot of people still make music for them, but I don't know if that constitutes an actual "scene". Is there a scene somewhere that I should know about?

I can read Japanese, yes. Part of the reason I like PC98 is that the text looks much nicer than on systems like the NES, Genesis or even PlayStation1. Old consoles had shit resolutions and usually all the text is in Kana-only, whereas PC-98's resolution is reasonably high and has no problem handling both Kana and Kanji.

i've never played anything on it, but from the screenshots I've seen it seems to be like with the ps1, i.e. it can handle Kanji but the text is still ugly due to the low resolution.

Picrelated is Phantasy Star on the SMS, which uses Katakana only (PSII on the Genny had Hiragana and Katakana, while in PSIV they finally managed to make it display Kanji)

The best part of this game is that you keep staring at the picture and getting closer and closer, and the closer you look the more you realize how much they used fancy techniques effectively. What you think is a whole range of colors turns into a few basic ones skillfully repeated over and over, it's like the 'turtles all the way down' except with color, just when you think you've hit the end there's another trick to get more color out of the limited palette.

The demoscene seems to be mainly a European thing (with small popularity in America). The closest thing that Japanese have is the doujin soft scene, which is a bit more commercial in nature. I get the feeling that in the mid-80s and early 90s, when Americans and Europeans were coding demos and graphical effects to impress each other, the Japanese were doing hobby games and selling them through magazines and hobbyist computer shops.

I've never been to /co/, so I don't know the consensus, but my personal opinion is that 90's comics are unnecessarily grimdark, almost self parodyingly so. Basically, professionals use an algorithm to do it and then clean up. Some nutcases on deviantArt will do it by hand in MSPaint just because they like the look, though, but that's hugely inefficient and almost never helpful.

The 80s and 90s had effectively the pinnical of what anime could achieve in its base form. Bright colors, sharp lines, and expressive backgrounds really helped them pop out and seem a lot more interesting. Problem was that anime of today has been focusing a bit too much on making everything either too muddy or too colorful. Its better to have a good balance of the two. Cowboy Bebop is a good example of this. Plus, that delicious cel shading.

It's a shame that not more people know about this game - truly one of the best titles in the entire NES library.

Half the posts weren't replying to a post though. I don't know why you're talking like you know my extension. I'm also not sure why you got so riled up over one comment and can't let it go (Or why I even am to this point)

I need to go to bed, it's 6am and I've been up at this point for quite a while. You can win this one, I couldn't care less at this point. Just take time and think that not everyone has your opinions or preferences. Hopefully this thread can stop being shit now.

I've never been to Reddit, I wouldn't know how people there act. It was just my choice of word. Why do you feel the need to care so much about my choice of word? It's strange.

There was nothing to win, you have just been steadily digging your self deeper and deep into your little hole.
Cool, back to reddit with you.

Goodnight ;)'

I wish there was a sequel or anything related at all.
I remember playing it when I barely knew english, and had to open all gates by wandering around randomly.

I know that feel - being a non-english speaker as a kid made every game which had a story, clues and hints in text or speech a nightmare to complete.

I've longed for a sequel, or remake.

But I think they'd be able to fuck it up.

Here's an idea.

Once you pass a certain apathy threshold, you are sent to prison.

Because we don't need you.

No. Too many people are.

But the thing is... If they even tried to make a slamming action anime like we had back in the 90s, it would be a hit.

But they don't take the risk, so they can't know it.

Yes they would. Shut up.
Scarlet Spider's run has better art than anything Jack Kirby ever drew, but that's not his fault, we simply have more resources now.

If Jack Kirby knew what we knew now, he'd probably clean house.

Just having up to date topdown fights would be nice. It would probably go metroid/zelda route, making into a 3d world and changing shmup part completely.

Hmm, maybe I should learn to play Mahjong.

Ha, I learnt to play mahjong back in the time.
Was pretty fun, it's pretty much like rami.

Mahjong opens up a lot of fun PC98 games for you to play. You don't even have to learn specific hand combinations, just learn how to put together a basic winning hand.

The first ones did use a parser but after Portopia they simplified all VNs by using a command window

Sounds like a plan. I made this one and I'm pretty much out of stuff to post, anyway, so someone else do it. Remember to mention the old thread:
