But a "but thou must" situation doesn't let you end the game. You're just delaying putting off the advancement.

There is Doraemon jrpg on Famicom where you can do this in the very beginning when Doraemon asks you to help find his friends. You'll see the ending screen (bad one, but still), so yeah, it actually counts.

Interestingly in the case of Persona 3, the game (or at least a prominent character in it) discourages you from taking the only correct option. (one ends the game prematurely and is clearly the bad ending, the other just opens up the rest of the game and the actual ending.)

DQ I famously has a bad ending though. If you select "yes" when dracolord asks you to join him the game ends.

I don't get why Nintendy doesn't just add some stats and character customization & extra difficulty modes (Think dark souls) to ZELDA to make them action rpgs, and really go viral and crush the competition

I played the SNES version a while back and picked yes and then the hero wakes up in bed in town and it was all a dream and you have to re-do the final dungeon. Did they change that from the NES one?

Kinda related, in willy beamish if you pick the “‘mean” answer usually it results in insta-lose. I’ve never saved so many times per minute in a game before

It's a play on a but thou must moment. The player assumes that selecting yes will start an infinite loop and make you re-select, like a but thou must would, but then the game just ends.
