Okay /vr/, am I fucking fucked?
I just brought a Japanese ps1 (SCPH-7000) and it just arrived today, after exactly 2 months.
So I plugged it in, and it made a weird sound. Then it wouldn't turn on. I did some research and found out that Japanese supply voltage is 100V (which is the maximum the ps1 can take), and in my country (Australia) the supply voltage is... good god 230V. I just powered a ps1 with over double than what is required. I tried looking inside the ps1 for the capacitors, and they look fine. And now I'm scared of opening it again after I just closed it.
Now here's the million dollar question, did I just brick my shiny new ps1? Or can I still play it with a voltage converter?

just buy an used pal (220) one and replace it.

its probably more worth it to buy an adapter and test it before you go and buy a ps1 for parts

Electronics have about a 10% tolerance. If it takes 100v, you can in theory give it 110v. Past that is dangerous. Seeing as how you went 230% over you blew something almost definitely.

Japan uses NTSC like USA. Don't use that shit without converters

50/60 literally doesn't matter for anything that converts current to DC, dude. It's only an issue with very old systems that use AC motors to drive turntables and cassette reels, because they play everything 16% slow.

Japan uses both 50 and 60 Hz power with converter stations between the two sides of the grid, so that should never be a problem when buying a Japanese-market device.

They can - I don't really know what he meant by that, maybe he meant chipping a PS2? It's definitely more difficult but luckily is unnecessary unless you really need support for PS1 copies.
I'd rather just stick with a PS1/PSone for PS1 copies though purely because some games will not work on a PS2 or else have some weird issues.

Retarded OP (pic related) here,
I've been hearing a lot of talk about modding the PS2 to play region locked games. I've done research into the subject and its honestly confusing as hell. What do I need to install and how to play my Japanese PS1 games on my PAL SCPH-77002 PS2?

Get a homebrew entrypoint. You can buy a FreeMCBoot memory card or burn a FreeDVDBoot disc.
Use mechapwn to convert the console to a US dev console. This will make it region free. It will also run burned games if you jump through the correct hoops.

Or use a modchip I guess.
