I've beaten it a while back, and now I can beat it consistently. For starters, that underwater level is easy as hell. Switch to worthless Ralph for that seaweed section, he's only useful as a health sink until you get him outfitted with scrolls in level 3.
Once you reach level 3, grind everyone back to full health, and make for the lower left corner of the map. The sewers of those buildings down there have health and rope, and the room directly above the sewers for one building has a scroll spawn. Keep going through it until everyone has 99 scrolls. The only tricky parts after that is that one jump that's impossible in the DOS port(just tap jump, you will make it just fine), that two screens of closing wall death in level 4(practice is the only way), getting to the technodome in level 5 without getting too torn up by the enemies, and then that hallway before shredder in level 6(which you need to cheese to get past, there is no other way to survive).

The game is actually pretty easy once you get it down.

I always ended up rescuing Raph from that one place I ever found a turtle. I pretty much used him as my damage sponge due to his insanely low range, even Mike is better

You do realize the final boss of area 1 is one of the bosses you can kill without taking a single hit easily right? Choose don, jump on wall on right, keep hitting downwards. Everytime he jumps, he will get hit.

That is where the games difficulty suddenly spikes and it's about as far as most kids could get back in the day. Even if you do get past it the Technodrome and the part just before is even worse, but the last boss is really easy.

I've actually never played Battletoads before so I don't know what to think.

My feeling is of hatred toward OP. I do a successful mental block certain games/parts in games and you go and remind me again.

I now really regret giving this game away. I mean it wasn't good by any means, but I spent a lot of time with it as a kid. But still, like 5 years ago I up and gave it away with a bunch of other lesser quality NES games. I'll never get that game back now. Not the same cartridge I spent so much time with. Makes me sad. But someday I would like to beat this game regardless.

The only game I've beat with save states that I refuse to go back and finish legitimately even though I owned it as a kid. Fuck everything about this game.

Throughout my childhood, I picked this up at different points, whenever I would feel drawn back to my NES.

I always just assumed I wasn't good enough to beat this level.
