Nobody knew what the 00s was going to be like back then (we're looking at this retrospectively), so having something what was conventional by gaming standards (mascot platformer) for the past 15+ years would've been a very easy sell for Microsoft to invest in.

That being said, Microsoft correctly made the wiser choice to invest more heavily in Halo. Halo being a success might seem like a revolutionary and genius move for most people, especially PlayStation fans, but the whole thing was very planned. PC already had successful FPS games years earlier, and N64 also had GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. Simply put, Halo was really just Microsoft marketing and selling Unreal for a console audience, and it worked.

Sonic and Mario are like those aging metal/hard rock guys who were big in the 80s, but during the 90s got overlooked for edgy new trends, but those hard rock guys are still around today selling out stadiums while the grungy edgy guys are mostly all dead

Mario first appeared in 1981's Donkey Kong. Sonic first appearance was Sega's Rad Mobile arcade game, in 1990. But Sonic's first game was the Sega Genesis (released before the Mega Drive versions) Sonic 1 in June 1991.

>You just explained why that analogy isn’t very good. Sonic is that 90s trend.

Sonic was designed as a mascot right from the start, and the original Sonic the Hedgehog was designed to upstage the western release of Super Mario World. Super Mario World was released for the Japanese Famicom in December 1990, and the US/NA release was August 1991. Sega of America had copies of Super Mario World while Sonic 1 was in development. They would bring the Famicom versions around to shop[ping malls along with Sonic 1 betas to gauge Sonic 1 to Super Mario World, Sonic was favourably more popular according to focus groups. Sonic 1 was released June 1991, and was definitely going for that early 90's appeal. This version of Sonic faded out of popularity. But Sega did very much reboot Sonic for 1998/1999 with Sonic Adventure. I think they gave Sonic a bit more of a tude, made his design a little slicker/ more angular. This was Sonic's second design throughout the 2000's. I think Sega was able to adjust Sonic for the 2000's and still make the character popular. The Sonic comparison is kind of weird, though. because Sonic was multi-platform (and on Xbox) by the time Blinx was announced. Jak and Daxter were the Sony mascots for the PS2 generation.

>Master Chief was a mainstream Doom Space Marine with a voice.

master Chief was like a cross between Samus Aaron and Doom Space Marine. It's funny, because Halo originally premiered at an Apple event, showing of Halo running on a G4 with OpenGL. Then Microsoft money hats Bungie into making halo Xbox exclusive. Then Halo becomes the definitive Xbox series. Master Chief may as well be the mascot of the console. Blinx was a good attempt. I think Blinx could use a reboot?
