CONFESSION TIME;
i've never played diablo 1 or 2 (have no plans to play diablo 3)

what's the best way to experience those two games? perhaps there are some remastered editions or fan-made bugfixes or content that improves it? or is vanilla the best there is?

more importantly, any resources for making it run on a windows 7 machine? should i just use a VM?

>> No.814594

Vanilla with patches.They both work fine on Win7.

>> No.814606

>>814594
do most torrents of both games come with the patches or are they hosted elsewhere?

>> No.814615

If you plan to play the original Diablo, be absolutely sure to do it before playing Diablo II.

The sequel is so superior in every conceivable way, that it will ruin the experience of playing the original.

>> No.814627

Hellfire for Diablo is optional, Lord of Destruction for Diablo II is essential.

D1 has creepier atmosphere and it's a darker (and slower) game overall.
If we are talking actual gameplay, yeah D2>D1.

Vanilla with patches. Blizzard is actually still releasing patches for it occasionally. The latest patch (1.13d) was released in October 2011. You can still play on battle.net, too.

No, it's not. Diablo I is an amazingly atmospheric game that conveys its dark world without any unnecessary bullshit.

Yup. Say what you will about gameplay in D3, the story and characters are what really killed that game for me.

>> No.814729

This. Hellfire was made by another team and it really shows. It's not terrible, but it really doesn't add much, and the new content is mostly not on the level of the original game.

LoD... is just an essential part of Diablo 2.

I don't really understand what you and others mean by that. Diablo II was about as good even in the wilderness areas.

Just set it in compatibility mode for windows xp, and run the file "D2vidtest". That should get the game working.

Now how the fuck do I deal with lightning immunes on my trapsin.

>> No.817240

I have Diablo II and LoD physical discs but I lost the CD-key. I can't really find any keygens that say they'll work on battle.net.

Probably a stupid question but is there anything I can do?

>> No.817274

>>817240
You can find some random keys online. They won't let you play on Bnet, but you can play single player or on private servers like /v/.net.

If you want to play on Bnet, you're only option is to buy another copy really. You can get them directly from the battle.net site store if you can't/don't want to search for a physical copy.

>> No.817306

Are there still servers on bnet?
are people still playing d2?

I need to hop on and have some fun.

>The sequel is so superior in every conceivable way, that it will ruin the experience of playing the original.

Don't listen to this guy. It's like comparing The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. They are both set in the same universe, and a large amount of the same characters and places pop up, but the tone is very different in each one. Diablo 1 is a slower paced game where you are forced to adapt to what the dungeon throws at you since there are no real "character builds." Diablo 2 on the other hand is all about the builds and planning. While I think that they are both amazing games, I find Diablo 1 more satisfying to play. I just beat it again last week.

>> No.817935

Personally I loved Diablo, could never get into 2 and have tried several times but have given up by the halfways point of the vanilla game from sheer boredom.

I think most of it has to do with atmosphere, Diablo 1 just had this horror theme going for it, everything was fucking dark and brutal, where I felt Diablo 2 just became this generic fantasy bullcrap that lacked any of the soul or style of the original, even if it technically cleaned up and built upon the mechanics.

A lot of them are bots, but the game is still very much alive online.

>> No.817963

>>817935
D2 still has that dark feeling but it's kinda watered down, because the game has more content. D1 was just gothic horror all the way through, D2 theme changes with acts (2,3 and 5 having little to do with D1).
The other thing is that you can run in D2 and you easily outrun most enemies. In D1 you literally dungeon crawl and if you take a wrong turn and walk into a big pack of enemies unprepared you're dead. You have to use doors and tight passages to your advantage. Not so much in D2.

How does /vr/ feels about mods?

I still play DIablo II: LOD, and 99% of the play goes into Median XL (Which is that fucking Ultimative mod now). If anyone's heard of it though.

My favorite build is a psychic assassin. Pour every single goddamn point into energy, points into nothing but biokinetic blast and psionic storm. Two katars with castspeed augmented, and whatever equipment you can scrounge together that you can wear. (Easier said than done).

Enjoyed erasing every character and starting fresh. Bloodwitch happens to be my favorite build overall. I do not really like what's happened to the mod overall since MarcoNecroX took over. But to each their own, The US finally got servers for Median XL as well. "The Sin Wars" Though I haven't tried this yet.

Either a mercenary, or play with someone else, or play a class that is adaptable to different situations. Ladder players also have the Infinity runeword.

If you have legit CD-keys and register it on battle.net, you can download the game in different languages, if anyone is interested in that. I haven't been able to get it to work though (trying the German version).

I have also never played D1 or D2. Why are they not available on Steam or Gog? Glancing over this thread I see battle.net that sells it, so that's a first time I've seen it available, but I can't find the price without creating an account and logging in. Can someone tell me how much they want for D2 (or D1 if they have it too)?

I can't fucking get used to the hotkey system in D2.
I'm trying to play (first time playing the game ever) and I'm trying to use the F* keys and it's just awkward, and I can't get used to any other key setup. It's bloody annoying.

To top it off I'm playing a ConcBarb, which apparently requires very little active skill swapping. If I can't get used to it with this, I can only imagine how much of a nightmare other classes would be.

I don't recall my keyboard setup at the time and what keys ca actually be used but for most games i'd just use qwe for high use spells asd for medium and zxc for low

>> No.822457

>>821824
You can redefine the keys, and I'd imagine you'd have some degree of skill switching if you're playing any sort of Barb, what with the warcries and all. My setup is something like:
QWER
ASDF = Skill keys 1-11
ZXC
V = Weapon switch (normally W)
K = Karacter menu (normally C)
J = Updated my Quests (normally Q)

I normally use W/S/A for most switched skills, with the others for stuff like Shout or Holy Shield. R may have been run toggle which I don't use, I just hold Ctrl down. Unless I forgot something else the rest are defaults.

Is that actually true? I haven't been able to confirm this, and I use PlugY anyway.
