WORLD MAPS.
They are so fucking awesome.
Don't you just love flying across them?
Let's talk about world maps, /vr/

What games had your favorite world maps to explore?
Bonus points for things you can interact with, like the vehicles and weapons from FFVII. Something about having huge enemies displayed on the map I find intimidating. Imagine if FFX had a world map with Sin constantly swimming/flying around.

Anyways, some of my favorite are Dragon Quest 5 and FFVIII.
Pic related, Esthar City looks crazy.

The final fantasy world maps look like shit in high res since you're not meant to see the textures that clearly. Makes everything look like legos.

FF9 because it had some verticality with areas connecting below and above the mist
FF8 because you could interact with a few things, like drawing from hidden spots and some quests that had you speaking to NPCs

>> No.817850

FF3's world map on famicom impressed me at the time because I really thought that the first map you're in was the entire world

FF5's 2 worlds concept was brilliant as well, although the mixing of the two was made predictable

I hate flying across them, my god, why can't I travel on foot, by train and stuff? I wish there was a modern-type game with as much exploration as a proper Dragon Quest, where it actually takes time to walk from one place to another and there's some actual discovery weaved into gameplay.

Of course I have. There's 0 (zero) sense of discovery in FFVIII. Trains and cars were awesome, but there was nothing to do with them.

That's not true at all. If you fuck around with Chocobos you can access some cool places earlier on such as being to fight Cactuars. There is plenty to discover once you get the flying garden too.

Granted it's true that the trainstations open up only after you have the Garden which makes them a moot point.

Oh quit telling me about FFVIII, I've been everywhere and found everything back in 1999. There's no discovery, no map puzzles, the world is tiny.

There was an FF with an enormous world that had no personally piloted airships. Foot, chocobo, teleportation via waypoints, passenger airships to ports, and boats across the sea.

Boat travel was the best, they were 10 minute rides where one can go fishing or fend off attacking pirates and sea creatures during the ride.

jk lol its an mmo

I know, right. FFVIII probably is the pretties FF, and has the best soundtrack, too. Outside of character design, it probably has the best, most imaginative and aesthetically pleasing art direction in the whole series. AND the best soundtrack int he whole series, too.

Holy crap, Square, how did you fuck that game so badly? How? Just how?

I still think it's cool as hell that the DQ3 world is middle ages Earth and it's not blatant about it. Just playing through you'd notice some stuff that reminds you of Japan or Egypt, but it doesn't beat you over the head with the fact. I was amazed when I realized what the map really was.

Britannia had a great map, if only because it was consistent. You went back there the next game, and it was familiar. It felt like returning home.

FFIX for me.

Felt magical. They limited your exploration perfectly, giving you just enough options at one time to keep you excited but not overwhelmed.

>> No.819958

Anyone ever play Sentinel Worlds?
It's this sci fi rpg from the 80's, basically you're leading a squad of space cops in a colonized star system.
The few planets you can visit have procedurally generated terrain which is maybe sort of repetitive but it's kinda cool how real-life sized the planets actually feel.
Not the coolest world maps maybe but it felt kinda cool anyways. If you actually found a secret there (without reading the hints) you really felt like you found a secret.
