Also, this boss. The one time I beat it, my dad got pissed off I kept asking him to wait for me to save so he cut the power to the console FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

I beat it after finally owning the game later

>> No.8170708

To me, game length filtered me much more than difficulty, during rentals.

I'd sum as:

Renting difficult game
>Get rekt
>Is this game even fun?
>Yes? Then keep playing. Eventually, I get better and might even beat it. If the game is really good, I buy it when I can. Great!
>No? Lol! Fuck this shit! Return it.

Renting lenghty game
>Am I playing good? Doesn't matter, this shit takes long.
>Oh, no! Weekend's over! Gotta return it!
>Yay! Friday again!
>Fuuuuuuck! Jimmy rented it on wednesday and saved it over my game!

I hated it, seriously. Never understood the logic of "make this game impossible hardnao no one beats it on rental". Even difficult games, when played right, are finished at around the 1 hour mark. And it never prevented me to buy a game I had already beaten. It only adds artificial difficulty for nothing.

Game lenght, on the other hand, made difficult to finish even easy games, since you had to put so much time into it, and praying no one overwrote your save file.

For me, it made long games (RPGs) kind of magical and mysterious, knowing that there was a massive adventure of which you'd only scratched the surface. Often, you would see someone else's late-game save (maybe from an adult or spoiled kid who re-rented it all week?) and get a glimpse at some of the amazing mechanics and locations hidden past your filter point.

I used to judge previous renters by how far they got in their save before I deleted it. I took exquisite pleasure in deleting saves with lots of playtime.

He probably rented it a few times to get that far, and was lucky his save wasn't deleted. Only to get stuck hard at that point.

I could condemn your evil ways, but these things were bound to happen anyway. You had X save slots, and renter number X+1 would destroy someone's progress. The problem was even bigger when the number of renters increased quickly, generating more "save destroyers".

Oh, what I hated the most was when someone played with my save. There's also that. I'd rather had him erasing it.

I used to rent PS1 games in the late 90s from a small shop 50 miles away, was like £5 for 3 games and a guy would drive out to drop them off and pick them up a week later. Surely can't have been very profitable

>> No.8173757

>>8170648
you realize that, once game publishers caught on that ppl were renting their games, they'd purposely design the games so that a level about 15% of the way into the game would be completely challenging to play, right?
disney was notorious for putting a "filter" level in their games that would be nearly impossible to beat which, they hoped, would encourage you to buy the game so that you would get good enough to beat the level and continue on.

>> No.8174495

Regarding Disney, I only remember that in The Lion King. And it was more because of fucked up collision detection than sheer challenge. Games like Castle/World of Illusion, Quackshot, Aladdin (Genesis and Super Nintendo), Mickey's Magical Quest 1~3, Donald Duck no Mahou no Boshi... They all have balanced difficulty. Aladdin (Genesis) was even of the same makers of The Lion King, so I don't know what went wrong there.

Renting the games is what got me into RPGs. I rented Breath of Fire and was turned off at first but someone's save point was way ahead near the end of the game and when I played around on that save file, I was fascinated with how huge the game was. Ended up re-renting it til I beat it on my own save file. next up was FF2. /blog

It's weird in this game, you got Storm in her Jim Lee 90s outfit and Cyclops on the cover in his too but then in the game Cyclops is wearing his 80s X-Factor costume. Wolverine in his brown and orange too. I wonder why they did that.

>> No.8177482

>>8177464
That actually does make a little bit of sense. They put the current costumes on the cover since that's what the current fans would have been familiar with, but used more visually distinct costumes for the actual game to help them stand out from the background graphics. That they actually bothered to use actual costumes from the comics history is a surprisingly nice touch for such a shitty game.

>> No.8177513

>>8177482
That does make sense. The white piping on Cyclops' X-Factor costume allows you to see him easier on his shitty dark cave levels. If he was wearing his solid blue condom suit he would practically be invisible and a couple yellow belts and brown hair with his Jim Lee outfit likely wouldn't be enough either. I get it now. It confused me as a kid because I had never seen that X-factor costume before, I had seen the blue condom one in the arcade game.
