Thread to discuss PC-98 games. What have you been playing recently?

I've been playing a game called Net Guardian, a wholly unimpressive shoot 'em up from 1997. Both graphically and gameplay wise, it's nothing special at all. The music is decent, but even so, I don't see myself picking up this game again.

Honestly? It probably takes less time to learn Japanese reading fundamentals than it does to wait for something you want translated to come out. Yet even if it is translated there's still a layer between your understanding and the author's intent.

But then there's also the problem of learning Japanese and discovering that your media is less smart than you originally thought.

>Kanji on top of that is so intimidating
It is, but, it's genuinely attainable. It’s just a matter of time.

There was a fantasy series I read as a kid called Myth Adventures. The protagonist is an apprentice mage, and the first book starts with him struggling and failing to light a candle with magic. A couple of books of shenanigans and adventures later, there's a chapter that opens with him lighting and snuffing a candle over and over again just to marvel at how easily he can do it after all he’s been through.
Even though Japanese is just something I'm used to now, from time to time I still marvel that I can light the candle. It's pretty cool.

Also I recommend Myth Adventures; it’s a fun series. It’s in English and won’t help your Japanese studies, though.

It's not like there's a lot of conversation.
- Only a small number of games have been translated (and at best we discuss the quality of amateur translation)
- Excellent design (and the usual eroge stuff)
- Amazing soundtracks
- Breasts of the Lakers
- Various forms of waifuism (Lina; Natsume Tachibana; Erin; Asuka and so on)
- Some rare untranslated RTS / SIM is rarely mentioned.

This is how PC98 subjects usually function.

The sound cards in those PCs got the best yamaha FM chips, like the ones they used in the arcades, while consoles like Mega Drive got a budget dumbed-down chips with less channels/algos. The sound engineers were geniuses who knew how to use them properly, like Masahiro Kajihara, he not only composed his own music but also programmed a PMD music driver which was then used by him and many other composers to make music.
There is tons of great soundtracks, some of them are really obscure and I can't even find anywhere (PC-98 Slayers has some nice tracks, but it's not on vgmrips or youtube, only listenable through hoot).

I've been enjoying going through Wani Kani so far. Teaches you the radicals, which then builds into kanji and then vocab. On level 7 of the total 60 (they estimate it takes about 1.5 to 2 years to get through it)

Caution though, it only teaches you kanji and vocab, you will need an other source for grammar. They say its best to start grammar when you hit roughly level 10.

If you do use WK, it can be easy to burn out because you will hit a point of having 100-200 flash cards a day (scattered throughout the day). I recommend using the phone app and setting the lesson reviews to no more then 15 (I use 10) reviews a session.

>>8158671
Sometimes I wonder if the sizes are just written randomly by the designers and developers, or if they are determined during the early planning stages.
Preparatory drawings: Erin is the same height as Jun.
Guide/Game: Jun is twelve centimeters taller than Erin.

Whatever the case may be, I tend to forget that the characters in these games are mostly manlets who are rarely taller than 180 centimeters.

I find a lot of Studio Soft Wing's games really interesting. They're high on the "Man, I wish these would get translated" list (or the "Maybe I SHOULD learn Japanese list).

The Shiro to Kuro No Densetsu ganes, Destruction, Onryo Senki, they all seem interesting, with fairly minimalist and gritty art (with some neat visual tricks thrown in), which ranged from the chiptune to supplemental cassette soundtracks.
