Several mistakes with the textures. Here's just a few examples that I noticed-
OGM_1I_6 (gothic step texture) is gone
SW1BLUE was originally a gothic switch in the resource pack, it has now been changed to the stock SW1BLUE
Most frustratingly, OK6_18_0 (a board texture) was only 32 units high before, now it's 128, and a half dozen of my props that used this as a midtexture (crosses, wells) are broken as a result. Also, there are several OK6_18_X textures in the resources WAD, but only OK6_18_0 shows up in the editor.

>proper mural graphics for modifier selection on the start map (placeholder being used now)
>fix some jankiness with grapple swinging
>make yanking enemies with the grapple more consistent (and add more enemies to the list of yankable ones)
>finish texturing new runes
>adjust railgun strap texture
>add more things to monster randomizer + add a check for customized monsters (to not replace them)
>a few tweaks I wanted to do but can't remember...
Some of this might get saved for the testing phase before release, but I'll try to get it all done before then. Good luck with the mapping!

I fully admit I still suck at retro shooters, and whew The Birth is a bit of a difficulty jump for Duke3D. I'm having fun, but it feels like I'm actually being tested sometimes now. Last three eps were pretty much a breeze in comparison.

Wait for EP5 so the Battlelords get introduced as regular enemies. Ep4 and Ep5 definitely up the difficulty but it was needed imo, in "UV" difficulty among retro FPS games Duke was definitely the easiest. But don't forget to use shrinker and extender, don't be one of those people that uses shotgun exclusively then complains about the difficulty, this isn't Doom

Duke is fucking weird in terms of difficulty and they rely a lot on really cheap enemy placement like putting those suicide drones in tight rooms in large numbers and they have a lot of HP so most of then they will blow up in your face.

Same thing with Battlelords and those fucks from the Life's a Beach expansion that float around and fire explosive projectiles, they're placed around a sharp corner so you'll most likely eat an explosive coconut right in the face or the splash damage'll get ya. Pipebombs around the corner are your best friend.

Also that guy wasn't complaining, he said he likes it lol.

If you come across suicide drones in a room you just close the door back, their reactions aren't instant and they make noises when they notice you. You just shrink battlelords, for Life's a Beach expansion do you mean Assault Commanders? IIRC that expansion doesn't add new enemies just reskins them. If so just dodge their rockets and use your own rockets, they're not that hard either

I think they actually introduced a new enemy since I'm not talking about the fatsos that normally shoot rockets or their reskinned version, there's an enemy on a bouncy inflatable that usually has no hp but they put them a lot around very tight corners so they will insta-shot you or do heavy splash damage to you.

General Idea.

>Mjolnir loses its AOE attack from SoA and doesn't use Cells. Elder Magic unlock a ranged fire similarly to Vorpel Sword with Tome of Power from Hexen 2. Slightly stronger than melee attack, knock back or stuns an enemy for a bit at the cost of 5 mana.
>Hell Magic reduces the fire delay of Shotguns by 1/3 for 3-6 mana per shot.
>Earth Magic provides lava nails for Nailguns for 2-4 mana per shot.
>Grenade Launcher might get a proximity mine as alt-fire by default.
>Railgun as a novelty weapon that uses Cells and might be available only on secret level.
Enemies.
>Make a proper use of original roaster.
>Bring back Centroid and Wrath from Mission Packs.
>Ghoul - inspired by Deep One, Ghoul and Ghast from Petersen's Guide. Melee enemy similar to Zombie Knights from AD. Their attack might be poisonous.
>Warlord - based on Axe Ogre, Centaur (Hexen) and Stone Golem (Hexen 2). Uses machete and shield with potential effects of Empathy and Power Shields from Mission Packs.
>Makrogg - copy of Gladiator from Quake 2, so that railgun would be more useful to the project.

That's weird it just appears the correct one for me. I don't know what changed that because I didn't even touch the Gothic textures.

About OTEX I removed some of them because it looked kinda odd and apparently didn't work for midtextures at all, sorry but there's nothing I can do about it. My only suggestion is replace them with another texture.

Its popularity hasn't come from within the Doom community. It is therefore 100% manufactured by the media. How did the media find it? I'm guessing the guy who made it, who has the hubris to call himself the 'Director', simply sent out a raft of emails and they jumped on it because lefists are still seething about Thatcher 30 years after she left office and almost 10 years after she died.

Very few doom mods get any mainstream press coverage, but this one instantly got reported on by just about every meanstream gaming publication within the space of 24 hours, and it's not even a technically impressive or remotely groundbreaking wad. Was browsing through idgames2 and I finally found the source of the Ranger Macarena, it's a simple DM mod that makes the nailgun force people to dance.
I don't know why I haven't checked here sooner, there's a whole bunch of crazy stuff that people were doing early in the game's life, and it makes me appreciate just how much is supported by the original .exes.
Sure, modern map releases are impressive and polished, but looking through this archive, and I'm seeing modders throwing all this shit at the wall. Janky and strange, but creative.

There's actually a brief window between them finishing their attack and the fire being spawned. It's a very subtle cue but there's a smoke cloud and a quiet whoosh sound, if you move in reaction to that then you won't get grabbed. Then just shoot the fire. Tried Wayfayer itself (not a tome), it feels a bit faster, super-crossbow is weird, map design is kinda crap.

Tried REKKR after that - and it is the best TC I've seen so far, something about level design just feels right. It really got me when I was attacked by transformed healing potion bottle - pure soul. Eyes first appearance was also nice. Difficulty is a bit too much for a gamepad (everything hits like a truck), still okay with savescumming. One annoing thing is that axe doesn't stun the enemies and therefore too dangerous to use.

So I revisited both Quake mission packs after 15 years. Actually I didn't expect much. I expected them to be dated. For my surprise, they still hold up quite well. Design doesn't seem to be dated. Well okay, if you compare them to likes of AD, of course they feel old. But comparing them 90s and even 00s wads, they still feel much more fresh. Maps feel fun, compact, and there are no frustrating parts or feel of getting lost.

It's time to rip your head off and shit down your neck... and I'm all out of shit. But I've got some old Duke map pack recommendations, for the ones who missed these in the golden Duke years.

Last Reaction and Water Bases (also called Aquatic Edition). TC that imagined itself as fifth and sixth episodes, and it really was so good, that it could have official expansion like Plutonium Pak. Two full episodes, many new monsters, a new boss, and even new cinematics,

Chimera. Sequel to previous one, a seventh episode. Sadly it was never fully finished, but first 7 maps are fully done and playable.

The Gate. 4 episodes, new monsters and new fun weapon that lets you launch discs at the enemies. Legendary TC.

American Assault. Fight through USA's holiday attractions on 3 episodes and kill the alien scum. You also get double desert eagles and double barreled shotgun to fuck some shit up.

Critical Mass. Short pack of maps with new monsters, but you also get weapons like railgun and bfg. Fun.

Duke Tournament. Was made for multiplayer, but it had nice compact single-player episode with double barrel shotgun and some minibosses.

God Of War. Very fun maps, flamethrower, new monsters. Fun.

Nuclear Pack. Classic add-on, which gives you gravity gun (long before HL2) and let's you fight through fun maps. Also had some new monsters.

Lost Duke Episodes. Full 4 episodes, full of new colored varities of old monsters with all new attacks. 4th episode Paradox, gets really weird, in a good way.

Duke It's Zero Hour. Was supposed to be official expansion, but it was released for free. Had some new weapons, but many new monsters. Some say that the map design is quite shit, but I like it because of the nostalgia.

All of them compatible and patched for Eduke on addon compilation. If you are running out of Duke to play, get it now.

That version doesn't probably work with Eduke though. Use one in Eduke addon compilation instead.

To be fair Nuclear Pak's gravity gun of course works way different than in HL2. After all there is no physics in Build. You launch the projectiles to enemies, they rise up, fall down and die. It's pretty fun nonetheless.

Depends on the level of complexity you want, but it should be perfectly doable if you're content with each planet being a seperate map. Level exit triggers can be toggled on and off depending on where you want the gate to go. You may need to rig some kind of of action button if you want manual dialing on the DHD or SGC computer though. The buttons would be a bit too close together to shoot them all I think.

DNF, died three times.
Geometry and enemy placement is pretty good for the most part. Seems like it needs more health and ammo distributed about, or at least a berserk or chainsaw near the graveyard spawn. I like the way progression works, you're never lost. Gargoyles flying through the upstairs window was a great setpiece. Underground section isn't too dark. Something you could do is put bright fixtures in the walls to silhouette enemies, for better visibility and aesthetic contrast. I'd vote to keep this MIDI.
Your closet ambush between the red door and blue door is a bit jank. The shotgunners are stuck inside of each other and can't move at first. The closets are all too narrow and it's not very engaging to sit and shoot them as they hobble out one at a time. You can make the closets wider and more shallow to empty them quicker.
The map allows you to take two paths from the start, but going right into the house without the super shotgun isn't ideal. Placing a super shotgun in the upstairs bedroom would balance both paths the player might take. Otherwise the map start's nonlinear fork-in-the-road-decision is only an illusion, because there's clearly one preferred path.

This is a bit more than just geometry and enemy placement
- I like how you can see the red key already from the start
- strong "overlooked hotel" vibe from the mansion interior
- textures too long, change lightlevel in adjoining sector (e.g. on windows)
- texture at gargoyle statue missing, generally lots of misaligned textures and HOM
- railings not impassable
- pain elemental wasted because I can just bully it to death
- area with the many imps very bland, infighting with shotgunners starts almost immediately
- archvile encounter pretty easy, can just cheese from outside the door. Funny enough I also have an encounter with an archie and two satyrs in my map, but it's a smaller room and there's only an open passage between two rooms, so it can actually go after you (enemies can't pass color doors)
- underground room with yellow door is pretty empty
- secret behind waterfall has sky
- after yellow key door bones/rev encounter cheesed by just jumping down the ledge and pick them off from there
- softlocked myself by falling of a ledge before the raised bridge, no way to get up without noclipping
- after bridge where the shells with the imps and caco are I got shafted out of nowhere. It really is too dark.
- manc seems really randomly placed
- king boner got me good since I only had two rocket and a bit of shot left by that point

played with keyboard only since I am on laptop right now and was running low on health the whole time. You're also generally really stingy with ammo.

You need to forward whatever port your using. Netmode 1 only needs the host to have a port forwarded, Netmode 0 requires all players to have the port forwarded (being client/client)

Just doing some bits of polish before I move on. I'm moving the icon that shows up when you get the ice debuff down to each hero's life meter, also gave it a unique icon for each hero. Along with this, you can instantly charge kicks when overheated as Kustam. This is mainly done to stay consistent with how you can insta-charge at really high heat.
Also as a "Oh that's fuckin neat" kinda touch: taking ice damage drains heat/overheat.

Is Half-Life gunplay irredeemable by mods? Apart from nigh instant gibbage weapons, with each playthrough I notice how dull it is to play a game where enemies don't react much to your gunfire. Shit, Doom had it figure out, how hard could it be?
This is really upsetting me because I love the blocky 3D architecture of HL and its mods, but the gunplay drags it down for me a lot.

I don't really know the licensing involved with the engine you're using, you'll have to see if it's cleared for commerical use or not. On top of that, there are a lot more programmers/coders available for modern engines. You're probably going to have a fair bit of trouble finding people who can make good shit in the Quake engine and are willing to work with you commercially.

Did a little bit to this map. Ammo is still going to be pretty tight, but you can still get 100% kills with no secrets. Not easily, but it's doable. Don't want to spoil the other changes.
