Even the friends that used to like old games before stopped playing with me now. The only multiplayer I can have now is DotAshit, except I don't want it. I'm going to buy a fourpack of Shadows Over Mystara when it's out, but I'm sure I'm going to end up playing with strangers, and if I befriend them, they'll move onto CS1.6 soon enough and call that "retro".

That's a real tragedy OP. At uni my m8s and I were still using the fuck out of them for Smash and Kart 64. Thought that was way back in '05-'06 so... fuck where has the time gone?

But yeah. My best friend crashed at my place about two years ago. We hooked up my laptop to the TV and had ourselves some Mario Kart 64 tournies. We did eight of them back to back (150CC + Extra) every single night. It was grand. Goes to show how important those old friendships are bro. Getting older just fucking sucks.

It IS possible however to educate the 'modern gamer' on the classics. I have a 16 year old baby mode cousin that I love and I don't mind hanging out with him at all, despite the ten year age difference. I got him playing Blood on PC and he liked it. We also play Mario Kart 64 sometimes on occasion.

>> No.815135

One of my most normalfag (but very dearly loved by me) friends was crashing at my place once. He's my age but was never the kind of gamer I was, naturally. He saw me playing emulated Zelda ALttP once and he was kind of shocked.

One time he called me for a night out and I said I was knackered. He replied, "M8, you're not gonna be playing that Zelda One-D shit instead are you??" I lol'd.

Casualfags will just never get it. They really think graphics makes the game. It's... just too bad.

>> No.815370

>There are really so few people who play both?

I have always played new games, it's just that as an oldfag "new' to me meant NES at the time, then SNES & Sega CD. Also a PC gamer since the late 80s.

I have been a regular gamer since then, but still go back and play the games from my childhood. At this point I allegedly become a "retro gamer" because I enjoyed these old games (before they became old games).

With that said I do not have a backlog of NES games that I missed that I need to get back to. I rented games every single weekend for my childhood and went through countless titles, good and bad. That was enough for me and I only go back and play the real gems for the genuine nostalgia.

On the other hand I do have a backlog of games released in the past 3 years. I have less free time now and can't give up an entire weekend to grind a JRPG like I could when I was 12. I want to, I just can't.

However, he had a decent collection, much better than my own, and we did spend one very stoned weekend at his apartment playing Perfect Dark on his 64 while his fugly sister got drunk on Frangelico and tried to make fun of us.

I'm still FB friends with this guy, we played some multiplayer Steam games together but we haven't hung out since that time last year. :(

I go to OttawaU (obviously) Ottawa, Canada. Easiest way to find retro gamers, or at least a small chunk (like 6 - 7 people) of them, is to go to the CSSA office in the tech building. Most people there collect/play retro games.

I help out there a little as well; There's a N64 set up to bro down with some Smash Bros (or any game someone brings in, really) during downtime. The CSSA is also responsible for some of the LANs that go on during the year there, so a lot of modern and retro consoles end up getting set up at the events. So I suppose for anyone who has your problem that goes to OttawaU, there's always that.

I don't understand every ones hate for Skyrim and Minecraft. Yeah, the fanbase is shit, but the games are actually fun.

I also don't understand every ones obsession with actively and persistently searching for people who share your interests. No matter what type of gamer your friend is, I guarantee if you hand them a controller they will play with you, and if the game if good, they will play again if you invite them to. Either that, and yes it is pretty pathetic but effective, invite the neighbors kid to play the games with you. If you play with kids that were a similar age to when you enjoyed those retro consoles, it truly allows you to act like a kid all over again.

>> No.817678

Skyrim and Minecraft are simple because they are easy, and the only time you will die in either is if the game fucks up, or you are simply careless. This makes the games tedious in my opinion. In Skyrim, I beat the last boss with three melee combos. Blacksmithing, enchanting, and alchemy are fucking broken. Only an idiot would fail to notice that if you take a potion to increase your enchanting skill, then use that skill to make equipment that improves your alchemy skill, that you have an unending loop for skill gains.

>> No.817725

>>817678
>are simple because they are easy
Simple and easy do not equate to bad. They are easy, and slow, but are still very entertaining, at least to me. For Skyrim, you can only level up so many times with one skill. It isn't never ending leveling, and I am sure there are patches, if that is even a game breaking issue which I doubt any one would spend hours doing the same tedious task just to ruin the game(if you do, that is your own fault). If it is easy, it has artificial difficulty to make it harder, which isn't always great but it is there. I actually really like the survival aspect of Minecraft, and the amount of creativity it takes to enjoy the game. I wouldn't say it is easy, because depending on the situation, it can be pretty hectic, but then again that goes for both games.

I still prefer older games, such as Daggerfall and Ultima Underground, but they aren't terrible games.

We don't talk much about retro vidya, and when we do it's usually Fire Emblem or consoles in general.

Don't even bother, i've stopped trying to reason with these people a long time ago.
He's an utterly immature and limited little shit and his brother is doomed because he forced his limited vision of the world onto him, and the worst part is he'll never learn.
These people keep hurting everyone around them and will never even understand why it's happening.

Yup, some people do.

The special effects are too bad.
Or there's no CG.
Or they think everything looks funny/stupid.
etc.

I fucking hate this! I started playing the series at New Vegas. But even I knew that there was a Fallout 1 and 2 before 3. I also knew that the current Fallout 3 was not the original Fallout 3. And I never even played the series!

hmmm. I'm not sure about that. At least here (Chile) there was this huge support for Nintendo consoles during the 90s so It's not like we got the games years later or somehting. At most, months. I'm not sure about the other consoles or other countries though.

However, It's true that NES and SNES/Genesis lasted more in terms of popularity which explains stuff such as the fact that we had a HUGE ammount of Dinosaur's Peak catridges or that Tectoy in Brazil still develops Genesis clone to this day.

I hope that shame and dissapointment was for him. If you felt it because some fucking faggot retard casual is talking shit you don't deserve a retro community.
Tell him to stick his appeal to novelty right up his ass and go back to blowing his other no skill blops bros.
Never, ever, ever, fucking feel shame for being a better man than someone else, ever. Never.
When you're running a mile a marathon you feel no remorse for the retard saying "ranning F4r l0ser, umadbro?" while he's rolling and lying in a pool of feces on the ground as you pass by. You tell him to "fuck off retard" and you keep running.

All the friends I grew up playing retro games with moved away ;_; At least we still share the interest in the hobby of them, and it's just not something that died when they left.

My ex loved playing Playstation 1, we spend a couple of weeks racking up extra lives between Rayman and Crash Bandicoot to get far in the game (She'd grind lives while I was at work, and then we'd take turns after each death during the weekend)
I'm not even going to begin describing the feels I get when I recall these memories.

On a side note, if anyone has a 3ds and wants to be frans my FC is 3454-0594-3601. We Virtual Console as fuck in here

I lel'd
South America as well as Mexico is somewhat behind on certain things. But on video games, it isnt. It took a while for my family in Mx to catch up. In the early 90s they were still playing NES and SNES stuff. But in a few years they caught up to N64 and PSX. Now I still get matched up with Mexicans everytime I join matchmaking in my casual shooters.

On a serious note, you can't replicate shit like in The Thing with CGI, it just looks too corny.

Just convert your regular friends. They might bitch for a while, but just break out your genesis and force them to play Golden Axe until you're done with the game. The novelty of an older gaming box might appeal to them, and then they'll slowly be converted. My best friend is all new games all the way, now he's got a SNES and can't believe he prefers it to his 360. Almost daily he comments he's so shocked he plays it more often

I think he's almost thirty. I don't even know how they found each other. she like all games too so good for them I guess.

other than that I only know some xbox and psfags who play stuff occasionally and one of them is a huge idiot but it's funny to be around him.
