Please, an algorithm is smart enough to interpolate using non-linear algorithms. The problem isn't in their interpolation methods, the problem is that they are fundamentally generating information. And while you might be able to generate a higher resolution image of a dog because you have a billion images of the same breed of dog to reference, each animation is unique. There's nothing to cross-reference, so it just goes by lines and colors, being unable to tell the difference between a line indicating the curve of the bottom of a garbage can from a line indicating the detail at the top. So when animation is shifting frame context, you get the kind of image morphs that were popular in the 90s.

That was a weird game, as it kind of played more like a 3D game than I expected (despite being completely 2D)
Though notably, it still isn't completely smooth. I think in the new Guilty Gears, they actually cut out a lot of in-between animation/movement (which is there naturally from 3D models) to get a similar effect, so they are purposefully removing frames there.

It's a pity that we'll never see that idea developed further, but I'm glad we have the weird games that we do have. It's more of a pity still that we'll never have another Fatal Fury. That was a great series.
I can see why one would want to have choppy animation in a 2D fighter at the end of the day. If you're good you want to "see through" the sprites to the hitboxes, after all.

Kasumi's animations are just wonderful, a true work of art. I can't stand to play her in 2002 UM, because she just seems so horribly truncated in comparison, no matter how powerful she is.
My favorite thing about the later Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury games is just how experimental they were. I don't think the new characters from AoF3 and FF3 and onwards have ever been quite at home in KoF, which neo-SNK focuses on exclusively. It's a terrible shame.

Bring only real life reference photographs, or fashion model drawings. Fashion drawing is very different than typical figure drawing. It is like architecture except for people. Proportions are everything. Scale is everything. You should be able to find such fits from the Miami Vice cast, for example.
I live in a very expensive city and good tailoring on a blazer costs me the equivalent of a hundred to three hundred US dollars, depending on how complex the job is. Pants will be maybe eighty to one hundred and fifty.
Cost does vary very widely around the world. When I was in China I could get excellent alterations done for the price of half a night at a bar. But back home I accept the cost of artisanry.
That is the cost of designer clothes. But designer clothes today fit nobody, not even models. Their quality is worse than mall clothes from the seventies. Everything is made to crumble in our hands now.

>> No.8148438

>>8148407
I think it's because of the expensive environment there is in making games.
It probably ended up this way because KOF was a mashup game, so mechanically they kept it safe as they tried to fit characters in from all franchises into a single framework, and because of that it ended up as the best game overall, at least in terms of a competitive environment.
Because dev time and costs is bigger these days thanks to hi-res displays, 3D etc, along with expectations, there's less room for experimental titles or even smaller titles which were put on arcade machines.

Let me add an analogy. You would not show an architect a drawing from Miyazaki and ask him to build you that house. He would simply not know where to start. Artists draw the ideas of things, or what we think things are supposed to look like. Architects and fashion designers draw what could really be constructed. And it is a horribly complex job to convert one into the other. It is however a trivial job to look at a photograph of one person and convert their proportions to those of another, or to take a building drawn for one plot of land and to fit it to another.

LOL, that mod is terrible. It makes some monsters look like they're tip-toeing around.

>> No.8150256

>>8149265
I think the body looks decent enough (though requires some polishing), but fact is the head remains static like before, and with more smooth animation that makes it stand out more.
Given that Doom is limited to 8 rotations, this smoother animation will also call attention to that as the monsters in the game move around, something that your brain is more likely to just abstract away (for the most part) at the original framerate. This also goes for HD packs and stuff where you have horrible chopjob assembled sprites, crudely retouched upscales, or neural upscales, even if you put in the work to make those look good, you're calling attention to the lack of rotations here too.

Now, ports like GzDoom will allow you to use 16 rotations for sprites, and here you have potential, but none of the monsters in Doom (or Heretic, Hexen, Strife), have 16 rotations, they have at most 8 (a few have none, many mirrors existing directions so they can save on disk space by not having to include more frames). This is something you can't just cheat with, like trying to just hack sprites together in Photoshop, or use some sort of interpolation tool, you won't get an even remotely passable result.

You could make monsters for Doom with double the normal resolution, and double the normal rotation, and double the normal frames, and this could potentially look extremely good, but only if you're willing to start from scratch, and design around all of this, and only if you're a good and consistent artist.
For such effort, one may as well direct it into making their own game.

It is an interesting subject. However in general, no it is not true that adding frames will make an animation better. Especially when those frames are interpolated by AI.

The very idea behind animation is that when you rapidly flip between stationary images, the minds eye fills in the gaps creating the illusion of movement.
The animation on the right in pic related looks weird. Why? It is because the AI is doing a poorer job than the human mind at filling in gaps. The current generation of AI is usually pretty good at making an in between which is anatomically correct, without distortions, etc., however the overall animation result does not look that good. Think of an animation like a sequence of poses. In the left pic, Sakura is moving between more or less 8 poses, with such and such timing. For example the hips pop, the hand lingers and sweeps, the eyes follow the viewer. Those features are poorly interpolated by the AI. It just tries to make something that fits, but it has no concept of intentionality. The AI might get better in the future, but even so... whether or not more frames even make an animation better is subjective. It seems obvious that in action scenes a high frame rate will usually look better, but in subtle scenes a lower frame rate could look better as well.

less frames of animation can give more expressivity, it really depends on what you're trying to achieve. It's not a cop-out, it's just doesn't go into detail. The guy who created Earthworm Jim explained this when he saw the HD remake of the first game. He said you can't just put animations together without careful consideration on how they flow. In other words, in a single animation there are different rates of acceleration, kinda like how a bouncing ball has curved acceleration instead of the speed being constant. That's the issue AI interpolation will never understand because it's job is to fill the gap, not to make the motion aesthetically pleasing to the human eye.

Yeah, and so are processors, but Moore's Law was abandoned long ago. It's the old extrapolation fallacy, brother to the slippery slope fallacy. If you actually knew anything about ML you'd understand the mechanisms which allowed Neural Net Deep Learning to perform such impressive parlor tricks as "spot the tree" and "is that a turtle or a rock?" They don't expand infinitely in every direction encompassing everything because "if we can land a man on the moon, then obviously we can get computers to animate shit well."

Self driving cars don't exist. Plant identifying algorithms will be shit until the heat death of the universe. And the idea that an ML algorithm could produce skilled human quality in-betweening is positively laughable. Do you know why? Because life is chaos and humans are pure engines of chaos. And algorithms require structure.

Open this GIF in MPC-HC and increase the speed to 2X, it looks amazing. Why is the GIF playing so slow?

I dunno -- that just looks cheap and ugly to me, and the movement looks so unnatural and inorganic. You can't convincingly animate the human form (or any animal, for that matter) through this method without it looking as though you have a limp marionette on strings.

You gave no explanation.
I think you don't understand basics of animation.

Cool...and now? Can't put it into the original game because the board hasn't enough VRAM for that. So you wasted your and everyone's time. gj

On top of that it looks pretty spastic.

True. People underestimate how complex the human brain is, and don't understand that, in spite of how impressive machines have gotten, there's so many subtle human things we've been unable to make a machine do.

Whoever made this is a horrible animator. The attention is directed at the wrong parts. More frames ≠ better. Everything you animate should mean something. Look at Darkwing Duck. Why the fuck is attention directed so heavily onto the tip of the hat and the edge of the cape? This is awful.

This, the animation is already real nice and fluid, and made that way from the ground up, so it looks right.

Isn't the whole point of the "Ninja jog" to decouple the movement of lower and upper body for more stability?! So why the extra wobbling...
