8145585 No.8145585 [Reply] [Original]

As a Yank I've always been interested in the ZX Spectrum but buying one and hooking it up in the US so expensive and complicated that I never bothered. The Spectrum Next looks like the perfect way for NTSC users to get into the Spectrum ecosystem today, but the sticker shock made me have to sit back and ask, what would I even play on it and do with it?

What are some quintessential ZX spectrum games that in your opinion make the computer worth having? I know it's a more primitive computer than the Commodore 64 (a system that I love dearly), but what games really show off the charm of the Spectrum and are still fun to play?

Just download the Fuse emulator and try some games out on that:
http://fuse-emulator.sourceforge.net
No point in buying something you might end up not even liking.

I already have the emulator but I barely have any game files, which is why I want recommendations.

in some cases its not. Elite for example runs superior due to faster CPU on the Spectrum. compare most 3D games with the C64 and you'll be surprised.

The Spectrum is better at 3D since it has a simple graphics frame buffer and more CPU muscle. For the same reason the Atari ST is better at it than the Amiga although the latter easily wins in scrolling action games.

ZX Max issue 3 mobo is like 12 zogs on eBay. Parts will run $70-100, 3d print your own case, and get a keyboard.

You will have to learn a few new skills though and not be a totally useless cock your whole life.

An original ZX spectrum, while very cute and not that expensive, is a bit of a nuisance to get working in NTSC territories, especially on a CRT screen. Also my N64 is my original childhood system that I've had with me for 25 years.

I already have a lot of hacky projects laying around and I am not even opposed to getting a Mister, but I like the form factor and presentation that goes into more commercial products.

Someday I want to build an Ultimate Elite C64 but I'm waiting for new keycaps to become available before I take the plunge.

If someone here has a Xbox One or Xbox Series, Rare Replay has the ZX Spectrum games and the N64 ones...basically anything that isn't Donkey Kong related.

Of course, it requires owning a Xbox One or Xbox Series so probably not many people here will have the chance to play the collection as it didn't get a PC port.

Also on Game Pass.

Own an Omni and can confirm it's the best solution for any American wanting to fuck around with spectrum hardware and not just emulate.
>International PSU, no power conversion issues
>Comes with its own display so you don't need a PAL display or any converter but RGB out in case you want the option
>Joystick ports built in with both Kempston and Sinclair interfaces, no need for an adapter (not a problem unless you're using an originak 48k model tho)
>Built in SD card slots with EsxDOS/UnoDOS support
>Multiple Spectrum ROMs can be toggled to make it behave as a variety of different machines
>Made with all new components on a board with proven timings, no hassle of aging hardware
>Cheaper than importing the real thing

This thing is a godsend
