8138102 No.8138102 [Reply] [Original]

Discussion thread for all retro related Mario games and subsequent spin-offs. NES, N64, 2D, 3D, RPGs, Sports, cameo appearances, deepest lore, etc. Yoshi Islands, Wario Lands, and Kong Countries welcome.

Previously unseen concept art for Superstar Saga has been going around recently.

Some of this art makes me wonder what the game could've been like if it wasn't on the GameBoy Advance. It could've had a completely different feel if it ended up on N64 or GameCube.

This one looks really odd considering the tone of the game. It's easy to see Peach, Bowser, Prince Peasley, Mario, and Luigi, but I can't tell what the Toad looking thing on the left is supposed to be.

Looks like it. My guess is that they may have been wanting to imitate the attitude and style of Sonic at that time to make Mario seem more "cool." The art seems to come from a guy who was credited as a sound engineer, Isago Fukuda.

Something about the coloration and posing reminded me of this book cover, even if it's just using existing renders.

I used to read the author's novelizations of the Pokemon anime, apparently this was an original story. It used bits and pieces of locations from Super Mario RPG, but with Luigi and Yoshi involved. Only thing that really sticks out about it from a plot summary is that Wario takes the place of Booster, and throws buckets from a plane. That, and there's a sticker with a Bob-Omb render we don't see anywhere else.

Really impressed by some of those landscapes.

Have the Donut Blocks always been as lengthy as they are in Super Mario 64? Something about the art in SMB3 and World made me feel they were more narrow, but we never see them anything but head-on within the game.

Also curious about the early variations in Luigi's personality, I see occasional pieces where he's played up as greedy (that OVA) or hotheaded (the live-action movie) and it makes me curious how other media handled it. Especially how Nintendo moved towards the timid Luigi (around the Paper Mario/Superstar Saga/Luigi's Mansion era if I'm not mistaken?)

I thought they were shorter too, weird. I specifically remember playing 3D Land and dying because I missed a jump to the small donut blocks in that one ice level. weird.

Luigi's personality was all over the damn place, especially early on since in-game there were usually very few distinguishing features between the two bros. There is a Mario Bros. Atari 2600 and 5200 commercial that shows Luigi as a bit cowardice

I had a question but after second reconsideration its probably way too autistic and requires actual hours of research so I don't blame you if you have no idea.

I was gonna ask if this list is accurate. I'm making a Smash Bros music list where every game from every series is represented by an original track. The ones for Mario in pic related are the ones that have no original tracks (aka only remixes of existing tracks), or something else otherwise stated.

Is this accurate?

I'll try and do a deeper dive on the Super Mario Advance series but its hard since even some of the seemingly unique tracks are remixes as well. For example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osh5zUc85TM is a remix of a Super Mario RPG track, out of everything.

As for the Super Mario Run results screen theme, it does seem to be unique! But its not quite what i'm looking for in the project but I will certainly note it down just in case. Thanks!

I swear there's levels I played in the GBA version that are slightly altered from the SNES version, the one I remember in particular was the Ghost House with the green orbs feeling different which I think they altered so it was easier to fly through. They're technically the "same game" but the controls and overall feel of the games are different.

I never played Yoshi's Island and SMA3 extensively enough to understand each game and the differences between them. I ended up playing the GBA version first when it came to Yoshi's Island actually.

The only Super Mario Advance game that I think is superior to it's original version is SMA4: Super Mario Bros. 3.

Personally, I always go by release date order unless there's a significant reason. The Yoshi's Island games would obviously go Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Story (first entry in the franchise) -> Yoshi's New Island (interquel) -> Yoshi's Island DS (sequel). Then you have Super Mario World releasing between the first two Super Mario Land games, but Super Mario Land 2 apparently takes place right after Super Mario Land, while Super Mario World takes place sometime after Super Mario Bros. 3, so I usually put them in the order of World -> Land -> Land 2. Super Mario Galaxy 2, I'm almost certain, takes place in the reset universe[/note] after Super Mario Galaxy, so I move New Super Mario Bros. Wii before or after them (before makes sense since Peach seemingly starts composing her Galaxy letter during the NSMB Wii credits). But yeah, for the most part I just take the timeline as it comes.

In the manual of Donkey Kong ‘94, it says “The familiar game of “Donkey Kong” is now a Game Boy title”, confirming that the original Donkey Kong, and Donkey Kong ‘94 are the same game.
Its like the SMB and SMB2 "parallel worlds" or SM64 and SM64DS being the same game timeline/story wise, just retold in a different way.
In DK for the GB it's literally the same game as DK, you go through the first four levels of the original game and then the story continues.

>“The familiar game of “Donkey Kong” is now a Game Boy title”
So? That sounds like marketing buzz. The fact that the very next sentence describes the arcade portion of the game as "the familiar scenes of the first few stages" imply that Mario's been there before. Besides, it's already been confirmed to serve as a prequel to Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario Odyssey acknowledges Pauline's old and new designs.

Doing a second run of Mario RPG after my first attempt was glitched out in Booster's Tower upon equipping the Chomp with Bowser. Just beat Yaridovich. Has been really pleasant so far, no deaths so far except at Belome 2. Johnny is so cool; I like post-enemies that are chill like him.

>Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Story (first entry in the franchise) -> Yoshi's New Island (interquel) -> Yoshi's Island DS (sequel)
Yup, you pretty much hit the nail on the head. Instead of the reason being "first entry in the franchise" though, New Island is obviously a direct sequel, but also DS has flashbacks to the first Yoshi's Island in the intro so DS would indeed come after New Island.
It's also where Baby Peach and Baby Bowser is first introduced and why Baby Bowser doesn't seem to state his reasoning for kidnapping Baby Peach in Partners in Time.

Oh, and one more thing, Yoshi's Story seems to come some time after New Island since Baby Bowser is old enough to speak in full sentences in Story like he does in DS and Partners in Time.
So, it seems to go:
>SMW2: YI -> New Island -> DS -> Story -> Partners in Time (Past)

Also a useful bit of information, ‘Prince’ Bowser (as he calls himself now) confirms that he left Yoshi’s Island “on his own terms.”

Sorry for the wall of text but I think this info could be helpful when getting information for the timeline image

Oh I see. I figured you were the /vg/ people (Yes, there are mario generals on /vg/ now after what seems like a decade of none materializing, but this one seems suspect as it was birthed in june in anticipation for Super Rush circlejerking, but the game was a dud and only zoomers remain that slavishly defend Super Rush and other weak Mario offerings... Which isnt my ideal mario community). Id say you may have a chance of finding better likeminded mario fans on /vr/ if you keep to it and avoid overdoing it as much. They have to bump their threads every hour because the sheer size of the catalog sends their teeny general down the Page 9 within moments. But seeing as most of Mario stuff pre-gen 6 is more or less good stuff, you wont have much trouble beyond forced SMB3 vs SMB3 debates. Id say /vr/ is a good spot to try for Mario discussion. Still, I dont see why anyone here would be complaining, a LOT of retro stuff is invariably linked to bingbingwahoo one way or another.

Nah, that one was also a thing for a while, but this new Mario general was recent and is unrelated to bowsette posting. AFAIK there has never been a proper Mario general and there were only a few attempts made in 2014-2015 but they all failed, seems most people just didnt have any interest or motivation in them. This NEW one thats come about in June was made solely because a handful of zoomie children on /v/ started getting extremely drunk on hype and excitement over Mario Golf Super Rush, thinking that it would be a surefire hit that would instigate "/v/eekends" in a similar vein to MK8 /v/eekends (Because they probably missed out/are envious and restless). However it quickly became apparent that Camelot bungled the game with rng and fucked up the traditional mechanics, and a bunch of Mario Golf veterans started pointing this out and criticizing the game. They got ABSOLUTELY bootyblasted and started shouting down all critics until they were blue in the face and ultimately decided to hightail it to /vg/ in a vain attempt to shield their hype, but the end result is them having to bump their empty generals every few hours before it falls of from Page 10, because its failing like from before. Only difference now is that its zoomer Mario fans who are insanely bitter and spiteful, trying to force a dead general alive and pretend theyre open for all Mario discussions, but as soon as you criticize any game made past gen 6 they change their tune. Im pretty sure its only 5 or 6 kids in there at all times. Its pretty funny and sad. If you want you can go and observe them with morbid curiousity, or hell maybe bring up Super Rush's metacritic and watch them go apeshit. >>>351499851
I dont know how I feel about an intermitten general on /vr/, but surely it would never be as bad and miserable as the /vg/ one
