Have you ever tried to do those things on the port? Obviously not, since you blatantly jump to conclusions. It is a good port, and yes, you can do all of those things. Of course, not as efficiently as on pc, but it is good enough to where you can do those things 75 percent of the time. You can also use a mouse and a keyboard on it if you were so inclined, but for a portable port as is, it is amazing.

There's no source, but there are reverse engineering efforts.

BloodCM is based of eduke32, and is very nice, but only the first two Episodes are fully working.

There's also XL Engine. I've only ever used it to play Dark Forces, but supposedly support for Blood is "Pre-Release"

it isn't the physical box set but it is in the torrent
http://thepiratebay.sx/torrent/8557820/Retro_First_Person_Shooter_Compilation

I included two versions, because I really wanted to get this game to work, and this was the only download available (as in, no disc version). I couldn't get the music to run in the 'portsplice'(In the folder "Rebel Moon Altered Files"), but it fixes the framerate perfectly, and you CAN run the music separately alongside the game with any software that can run .wav files. I also included the original unedited files (In the folder "Rebel Moon Original Files"), but I am no good in DOSBox, so I couldn't get it running correctly. People were telling me previously how to get it to work, but at the time I didn't understand how to make configuration files, and haven't attempted to fix it yet now that I have a basic idea.

It also includes the sequel to the game, which works perfectly!

Currently I am working on the Amiga games again, going to redownload them from source sites to ensure they aren't corrupt and that I know where they came from. Added two more games to the list, WW2 GI and NAM, two build engine games. Still attempting to find Extreme Paintbrawl, as it would be an honor to play the only game to be rated under a 1 on IGN(besides another game that literally ripped off a different game, but that is cheating!). I would appreciate any titles you all may have recovered since the release of the torrent! I don't want to string the amounts of updates the torrent will have, so I want to get as many titles stuffed into each one as possible. I hope to only have to do it 3 times, and am putting a cap on that!

I feel like we could do a vocaroo/or other method of voice acting test/ contest , although I am sure everyone will try to do Dukes because his voice is fun to try and emulate. It would be difficult to voice those with no voice, such as Corvus or Doomguy, because they use the exact same damage clips/other sound clips for their characters. Therefore, nothing for reference, and a difficulty to differentiate voices.

Doomguy'd probably be the easiest. All we'd need is someone who can do his "GRAAAHHHWWWH" taunt from Q3A. John St. John would probably do it for big fat buckaroos. SO (Marathonguy) could probably be voiced by any wimp off the street, since his deathvoice sounds just like a BOB's. BJ doesn't say fuckin' anything so as long as their voice sounds gruff, we've got it. Or we could be funny and just make his 'voice' random PC speaker beeps.

A few notes from v5

If you like the ObHack-styled prefabs like cages, light sources, trees and the like, you're going to love this thing.

Map design has been improved greatly, the BIG ASS ROOMS era is over; the most notable thing from v5 is that the organic caves from 3.57 are totally back. AndrewJ brought back the ObHack-ish tech rooms too, which is great. Water-textured lakes won't inflict you damage anymore (yay) and the room lightning compared to 4.28 is superb

The only downside so far: filesize. A normal limit-removing WAD I often generate was like 10-12MB big in 4.28. In v5, the file is like 27MB.

Also, you're going to see these thingies all over the maps now; platforms with switches. They're kinda cool

Gina from Unreal has some shitty personality in Return to Na Pali. Originally Gina was just the default character though. You can switch to whatever gender you want, and in-game the hit sounds and jump grunts will sound manly or feminine. And they fucked all that up by having a slightly androgynous narrator for the expansion pack, leaning more toward feminine. So in the mission briefings you sound like a 13 year old boy or a 30 year old woman, and when you get in game you sound like whatever character you picked.

If you're going by the games story though, Prisoner 849 (or Gina if you just rolled with the default character) was on a prison ship full of murderers and other high-level criminals, so he/she very well may just be a fucking psycho, or a normal person with shit luck. Who knows.

Hell Knights are super tough because they're actually made primarily of copper, and their bodies are full of salty gas bladders. The gas bladders are protected by their tough bodies, so when you shoot at em they only lose their blood, which oxidizes and becomes red as hits the air. As for their bodies, upon death the gas bladders implode as a natural defense mechanism (hence why their bodies always fall to pieces like that) and release their salty gases quite violently. Not only does this salty gas make quick work of the Hell Knight's cupric insides, but it also has quite a stench to it. Let's just say that Doom Guy has grown to greatly dislike narrow hallways stuffed with Hell Knights, and greatly wishes that he had his lucky 'New Car' air freshener on those unpleasant romps through fields of Hell Knight guts.

Well, here's what I could gander from notes I took in my mind:

DOOMGUY:
Totally OP due to SSG causing OHKOs at point blank.

BJ:
People hate the chaingunner for the very reason that BJ topped the charts.

CHEXTER:
This guy could get hit by a train and live to spoon it's headlights out.

DUKE:
Made of goddamn balsa wood, but is loaded like fuck with explosives.

PARIAS:
Step 1: Take one of his Melees.
Step 2: Hit someone, Point Blank.
Step 3: OHKO

RANGER:
Explosive weapons and the close corridors of Doom do not mix.

SECURITY OFFICER/CORVUS:
I have little to say about these two, but they seemed to have a slower "weapon power ramp", in that there were more weaker weapons than there were stronger ones.

I will gladly run a rematch on anyone who does not like a result.

>>816372
Pretty much this, in bot matches BJ will wreck anyone's shit because he can constantly hit people with ridiculous accuracy and fire rate, I'm quite surprised he lost to Douk and Ranger.

Parias just homes onto people when he has Timon's Axe, which surprisingly can work well, but against BJ his odds are low as fuck

It is somewhat appropriate. A lot of the other characters have guns that could deal more damage on average than Doomguy's equivalents. If they don't, they have other perks to compensate. Should Doomguy be stripped of his SSG, he's essentially neutered.

The other thing is, most deathmatch maps revolve around vanilla Doom 2 and the SSG, and are not really made for Samsara.

So guys.

You know how the doom engine isn't proper 3d, but merely draws textures on a perspective based on the positioning and height data?

Theoretically wouldn't the same technique work from a different perspective, say, top down or isometric? Technically it's still kind of the same thing, or am I thinking of this totally wrong?

If using the ending itself isn't possible, how hard would it be to make a renderer that draws doom maps from this kind of perspective but still uses the same data as Doom maps?

I say all this because I wanna get into amateur game dev stuff, and I have plenty of ideas that the Doom engine seems just about simple and low-tech enough for me to work with, at the same time as not being shitty 2D Game-Maker or whatever. Metal Geartroidvania anyone?

>* add in more scenery: lamps, computers etc
>* symmetrical rooms
>* NSIS installer for Windows
>* proper install for Unix / Linux systems

>WAD Prefabs

> - mirror (horizontally) a 'T' or 'P' shaped hallway piece or big junction
> - do mirroring in prefab space (only really need X)

>New Starting Logic, three main kinds:

> CLOSET : you begin in a very small room, which is connected to a larger room, often by a door. The closet would only contain one or two pickups, e.g. a nice health item and (if you're lucky) a weapon.
> SIDE : you begin in the side or corner of a large-ish room, with nothing particularly special about the start position (except say a pedestal). There are no monsters which can see you (and usually none you can see either). Again, only a couple of items nearby. The starting weapon and ammo will be further away.
> MIDDLE : you begin in the middle of a large room, and often have to get moving to fight or avoid the monsters scattered around. There is usually some useful pickups nearby, especially a starting weapon.

>Monsters/Items

>+ SpiderMasterminds only appear very very rarely
>+ in later levels, low-level monsters should be used in bigger swarms
>- support "Swarms" : a group of 3-N monsters (either a single monster or 2-3 of a certain class), and place all the monsters close to each other, perhaps even have swarm patterns.

>Name generator:
> - create random weird-looking words for names of Bosses, planets or whatever. Use them multiple times over an episode or game to make it seem like there is a actual story to the maps.

>+ ability to replace music using MUS/OGG/MP3 from a bunch of files placed in a certain folder (e.g. "music/"). Needs a Lua API to read a directory.

No, it's Redbook audio. It won't read off a mounted CD. It has to be physically in your drive, and in the first-lettered CD drive on your system. I don't know if any way around this has been devised.

There are, however, a great number of Quake sourceports that support mp3 soundtrack playback. You should be using a sourceport anyway.

You definitely could. I've done so myself on multiple occasions for Redbook-audio games.

You might as well just burn the whole CD image while you're at it.

Oh wait, Steam doesn't sell the actual CD image. Steam sells you a gimped, ripped, pre-installed pseudo-copy with half the information originally contained on the CD removed, including the soundtrack. Don't you feel glad for buying old games from Steam that you could've torrented anywhere else and gotten the definitive version? Oh well.

>> No.819935

>>819927

Yeah, but you have to burn the CD regardless. I'm unaware of any Redbook emulator, and simply mounting the disc won't work because it has to be in your first drive, and there may be a restriction beyond that for all I know.

But that is indeed how the data structure is typically arranged. Don't play Track01 in your CD player, heh.

It's been down for several weeks now, but I just checked the IRC after a few days and they've announced that it is effectively dead forever. Before, there was hope.

Popular abandonware will be recycled, and the rest will just... disappear. It was only on UG. Underground Gamer was the only site that really cared about the history and preservation of the medium. If those who hold cultural sway ever realize the significance of videogames as an artform, we'll never find many of the early masterpieces, because the only museum that housed them has been burned down by indifferent copyright watchdogs.

Most of the stuff worth preserving specifically (as in, not covered by every other website) wasn't even under effective copyright which anyone would care to enforce. As far as any of us will be concerned, those games originate from UG, because they are impossible to discover elsewhere aside from the rarest of Goodwill offerings. Maybe landfills, as well.

It's a deeply fucked situation that nobody will care about because it's not where the money or the marketing is. People will continue to buy what they have been told to buy.

Every purchasing decision I've made in the past year has been informed by scores of games which I've played through piracy. The only way to save the medium is piracy, because piracy is the only means of developing taste. Otherwise, people will continue to buy shitty games simply because they're the only games they know about. And how can they expose themselves to the broader medium, outside of piracy? There is no way.

It wouldn't work, actually.
First off, weapon bobbing would make movement unbelievable. The only thing that would work for it is mounts.
Second off, it wouldn't be at all representative of the player's hitbox, so you'd have a sprite walking through walls, attacks that go to the right/left and still hit, and etc.
Third off, there's been quite a few ways to force a third person camera in ZDoom with various success--the biggest problem is getting a crosshair on that sumbitch and making the character not centered.

Question: would it make at least cartoon sense for an industrial shop-vac to do chainsaw damage to regular enemies, or would that be stupid?

I ask because I'm working on a custom weapon (looping vacuum noises are a bitch to get not sounding annoying) and think it would be a lot more convenient for the player to just replace the chainsaw entirely, but if it's gonna seem stupid if I do that I might give it a 50% replacement rate or something.

>> No.824732

>>824558

Don't let whether or not something makes sense dictate your decision.
People have made plenty of nonsensical weapons that deal devastating damage, such as a Rickrolling boombox.

>> No.824806

>>824732

Hmm.

Now that I think about it, I guess the reason I'm asking is not because it doesn't make sense, but because attacking monsters with it is less satisfying than doing so with the chainsaw, and so is less fun. And even when I get the vacuum sounds the way I want I doubt this will change.

I think what I'll do is have the chainsaw placements spawn both the vacuum and the chainsaw. Or something like that.

Even though it isn't (at least until you altfire later on) that powerful of a weapon, would it make sense to make it a number 2 or 4 weapon, just so 1 isn't that crowded?

So, my friend gave me a cart of DOOM for the SNES. I know it was supposed to be a complete joke compared to the real version, but dear God I can barely play it.

The controls feel delayed, although I may just be spoiled on today's FPS games. The graphics are ass, but I knew that. I was always under the impression that it was at the very least 'playable' but I don't see how.

I still wanna beat or at least play a bit of it on my SNES, but I am unsure if it's possible.

Any ideas on how to remedy it (aside playing it on PC)

This is the end of the /vr/ threads then.

You heard it here first. Ijon leaving samsara isn't the end or what caused it, but we'll look back on it as a distinct point marking the beginning of the end.

The flow of new creative content from /vr/ will slow even further.

I make a prediction that there will be no new maps/mods released here other than minor updates to existing mods.

If I'm wrong, you can bet the people making stuff here will migrate over to the zdoom or zandronum forums before long and start catering to the pubbies. You don't put hours of work into something to have it enjoyed by a dozen people at most.

People will lose interest in the threads since there's no new content being created here and the content overall for doom doesn't get released very quickly. One day, one of the threads will 404 without a new one being made, and no one will be around to see or care enough to make a new one.

And just like that, the era presence of doombros on /vr/ will be at an end. Sure, people will come on and ask how to play doom or seek recommendations, but the presence of doom on /vr/ will be as it is on /v/ now: fleeting and hounded by shitposters.

Well guys, it was good while it lasted.

I wouldn't say that is true, you just have been using boring game breaking sourceport exclusive features that remove challenge

You should not have only played Doom, but should have enjoyed different games and only play Doom every so often. If you did this, then you would slowly begin to dislike every game as a whole, instead of quickly disliking only one title.

Servers being empty is due to the fact that a lot of people have finals and such to work on.

We haven't made new projects because we don't really have anything to work on (yet).

Old projects aren't being updated as much because they've already been finished and don't need polish.

Ijon leaving doesn't exactly effect us at all anyway, he's still on the IRC and willing to work with terminus.

i think you should put hours of work into something to make it what you would want to play yourself. if you share it and anyone else likes it, that's a bonus. if not, it doesn't matter because you've still made something you yourself enjoy.
