Nah, it's Gdleen as >>8135712 said. Lagoon wasn't made by SETA, and the image screenshot is Gdleen. Considering it has the honor of being the SFC's first RPG game, it makes sense they eyed it as one the early titles to bring to the US's library too.

Kung Fu 2 AKA Spartan X 2 - Irem
Famicom port of the arcade game. Didn't actually make it in the end, since Kung Fu 2 was pretty subpar by this time. Fan translation exists.

Hammerin' Harry - Irem
Famicom game, got brought over to the EU, but for some reason(SNES on the way), it didn't make it to the US. I dunno if a fan translation is needed, but one doesn't exist yet.

Triumph AKA Castle Quest - Hudson Soft
Judging by the pictures in this issue, the localization was mostly complete when it got cancelled. While this prototype hasn't surfaced yet, there's a fan translation of the famicom original. I was really looking forward to this one as a kid, confused as hell when it vanished.

Bio Force Ape - Seta
This was an original game that was going to be released in Japan and the US at the same time. Thanks to the SNES, it ended up getting cancelled after being completed. In both regions. While the US prototype hasn't surfaced yet(is most likely the one featured by NP here), the JP prototype (FDS no less) appeared on Yahoo auctions back around 2010, and was bought and dumped.

Dino Hockey - Sculptured Software
This one wasn't mentioned, but was shown at the Summer CES which NP covered in this issue. The prototype was found and dumped, but it has no credits or dev info. Believed to be SS since it shares music and sound effects from Robin Hood.

I'll never understand why people travel to a foreign country and don't know the language. I'm not saying you have to be fluent, but these trips don't usually happen on the spur of the moment. People save up years to go to France. Take a couple months and learn at least enough to order in a restaurant, book a hotel, and be able to survive while touristing without having to have your Game Boy hand-hold you the entire time.

I kinda want to try that Robin Hood game again (after playing partway through it on a rental as a kid and then never touching it again). Maybe it is good? Nintendo Power seems to think so. But it probably isn't very good.

It's a mixed bag. The RPG elements got pared down from the beta to the point of being almost non-existent. All you really need to do is keep your inventory full of food and you'll be fine in most battles. The horse sequences suck, but they aren't that hard and there's only a few. The sword fights are a yawn, and mostly involve getting the enemy in a bad position or just hitting them before they can get too close. It's also possible to get yourself stuck in the lategame by failing to grab a certain item. It's not horrible, or even bad. It's just not great. Once you beat it, you aren't likely to go back to it.

Hm that sounds like it'd probably become tedious and start to annoy me. The only thing I remember from my childhood rental is the "melee battle" system where lots of characters fight at once in overhead view. That was strange and interesting to me, apparently (albeit not super fun). I wonder why Nintendo Power gave it such a high Theme & Fun rating. Maybe just because it was a halfway decent game with a strong license attached to it?? It seems like part of the meaning of Theme & Fun might be "how much people like the title and concept before they even find out how good the game is or what you do in it".

We also see in the "pros' rankings" how Nintendo employees are suckers for any kind of RPG, whether it's deep or not so deep. Maybe that plays into the rating? That might be a kind of bias that they tried to avoid though, knowing that the ratings were supposed to be predicting the reactions of random kids who mainly wanted to beat up Shredder and stomp on koopas over and over and who were not usually very interested in managing the economy of a Chinese province during the Three Kingdoms period or whatever.

Anyone know where/how I can get every issue of GamePlayers magazine? I wanna read about the Evil Goat God, etc..

I think "players" and "pros" is more "kids" and "adults". It's why the "pros" favor slower paced RPG games and stuff that is more thinking based, and tend to avoid the mascot stuff.

Yeah that may be. But at any rate, that preference for strategic games shows up in the Top 30, but does it also show up in the numerical ratings of individual games? I imagine they'd try to keep it out of there. Obviously when they rate Big Bird's Hide and Speak they're not gonna trash it for being too childish.

In that case, I guess they probably did rate Robin Hood highly because of the popular license.
