it's funny that their attempt to balance custom combos just forced everyone to do custom combos all the time
>>8131997
green is based mostly off of alpha 2, you have 3 stocks of super
blue is also alpha 2 but you have custom combo mode instead of super
red is based off of sf2 and you can't air block and shit like alpha but your stats are better

there is actually a 4th hidden ism. its like x-ism you just cant airflip, airblock, ground roll, have no super meter with the advantage of having no guard meter. (its shit)

3 max for psp has 39 fucking characters.

They need to do an alpha 4 that just has the 39 from 3 max but with a system that mixes A ism with toned down v ism, and had no other ism options.

Zism is called Aism in America. I'm not hating on it, i just think you can add a little of bit of V ism to it, and end up with a game that has the best of 2 and 3

No, though Japan has non V-ism tournaments. Even without V-ism though some characters still dominate. Dhalsim is top tier no matter what ism you use, he's just that strong in A3.

More games need to play with a Groove system. It wasn't perfectly balanced but in CVS2, four out of six grooves see regular tournament play which is pretty impressive balancing. They also worked to separate the top tiers out from simultaneous use because Sagat and Blanka mostly aren't good in the same grooves, but obviously that's a lucky accident and not design.

i think most devs now are too scared to deal with the headache of groove select
but it's the coolest thing and it gives players so much freedom to play how they want

I keep thinking "style select to play based on past games' mechanics" would be free money for the Smash series in particular. That series is so weirdly fan-segregated that it would immediately cash-in on the ocean of bizarre holdout fans who won't leave 64, Melee or modded Brawl.

Some of those games are more heavy-offense so it sounds like it's unbalanced, but you could actually load the on-hit mechanics onto the defender to make those grooves way more unsafe than others, ie it's the 64 groove that gets stunlocked and the Melee groove that gets bounced around, meaning they couldn't do it to everyone not using them to run train on later grooves, which have heavy defensive features and shoot out of reach back to neutral on hit.

Some series don't change a lot but KOF styles are also really cool to see changes between and have had various busted systems to abuse that got changed over time.

The problem is that it's usually a huge mess to balance. Samurai Shodown VI did this and that game is ridiculously broken with a giant cast of 52 characters.

It does offer some character variety and more for a player to adjust to. With the izm/grooves, in a small circle of friends can make it a different game if all agree to play it like one izm/groove only. I prefer the Z-groove, but when my friends and I all agree to go X-ism only, it is like playing a sort of Super Turbo.

There's nothing wrong with doing so, the effect is simply that it's rare in tournament that the two are on the same team. You aren't alone or anything and your team will never be bad with those chars, but it would have been the kiss of death if it worked out that the two in the same groove were optimal, which the vast majority of players don't believe to be the case. Every team would contain both, which would have beheaded the game on the spot instead of being alive 20 years later.

>More games need to play with a Groove system.
since you weren't specific, I nominate Smash to do it.
would solve the whole debacle about if Smash should be mostly casual/competitive or if Sakurai has to make middle grounds nobody will enjoy.

I'll use Ultimate's spirit training dojo -style names to simplify the concept
>Ultra-style: simplified moveset encouraging more use for basics, hitstun and knockback power increased, gameplay tempo is middling like 64.
>Deluxe-style: gameplay tempo is "aggressive" like Melee, physics are high gravity, several mechanics are applied like youknowwhat and DACUS
>Cross-style: gameplay tempo is "laid back", physics are just what you exactly get from a Kirby game, no mechanics nor stuff like air dodges, random tripping returns
>Standard-style: current gameplay tempo is "accessible" like Smash 4 and Ultimate, Not ultra-casual like Cross-style so no tripping or elemental weaknesses, not ultra-competitive like Deluxe-style so only L-canceling is required, is already middling like Ultra style but without the nostalgic changes, literally vanilla.

dictator prefers A so you can mash srk+HP and kill people
blanka has a similar thing with jump HP because it's instant start up
they're still both obscenely good characters especially in a roll cancel groove but it's sub-optimal

>> No.8139551

Don't forget that Smash WiiU and Ultimate had huge defensive benefits. Large perfect shield windows, the way they recover from knockback being balloon-like to prevent followups and taking longer to kill, and the presence of both momentum and directed airdodges makes a "Defensive" groove very much present.
