I just realized while taking a shit that I've never played any of the old Tomb Raider games despite being a boomer and enjoying the nuRaider games.

What's the best way to play them in this day and age?

Use OpenLara for the first Tomb Raider.

I would play on ps1/dreamcast if you can. The graphics have a bit more charm on console and it just works unlike the PC which needs a patch to fix music etc. They play better with a controller too.

If you get frustrated easily, I think all of the PC games let you save anywhere whilst a couple of the ps1 games have limited save crystals. 3 in particular is more difficult on ps1.

Be warned that the original games were 95% exploration and 5% action.
The blocky 3D maps are big logic puzzles and you will spend most of your time pulling levers and figuring out how to get where you want to be.
Oh and the jumping puzzles. Lining yourself up perfectly... and realizing that sometimes you need to jump facing backwards instead of forwards because Lara's backwards jump has different arc.

Not that anon, but the PC versions had different brightness settings compared to the ps1 versions (although much less noticeable in TR2). Usually, the contrast was cut down by around .5, but in 3's case, all animated objects (Lara, NPC's, anything animated) had the brightness altered even further making those darker compared to the pc version. You can use dgvoodoo to get the contrast sorta back to what the ps1 version looked like, but the animated stuff will not match.

So I've recently begun a TR series play through. I'm replaying most, if not all, on PC. I'm not adverse to modding (I'm using TombATI for TR1 currently, and it works like a champ, along with the higher resolution cutscenes.... no texture packs though)

I don't really get people that bitch about the PC version of the game. I had it up and running in less than 5 minutes and am even using a controller (right click game in steam library - properties - controllers - use steam input) and it works just like the PSX version.

What bugs me a bit is finding out about Underworlds lack of DLC on the PC version. Is this just straight up lost media now? I don't think the X360 servers work anymore (could be wrong) and I would have t get a 360 to boot (hard to come by in my region, although I COULD order one online). Is there ANY way to play that DLC on PC? Last I checked there's still no 360 emulator, so wtf do I do?

is the DLC even worth it? I remember those three (Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld) having a sort of trilogy storyline. If I don't play the DLC am I missing out?

The games aren't even worth it. Anything past TR5 is shit, arguably TR3 is the last "good" TR game, TR4 is only half good and 5 feels like a community map pack for TR3 with graphics from 4.

I occasionally make not-knowing-about-the-redefinition-of-"boomer" posts as bait, so it might be. I've also made one post unironically the first time I saw the meme.

Some others I'd recommend include insulting the intelligence of anyone who says "wa la" on /ck/, as well as correcting deliberate misuse of pallet/pellet/palate/etc.

I'd have to pick TR3 or 4.

>TR1
Love the game for the classic that it is.
The spaghetti-and-meatballs aesthetic of the Atlanteans really breaks the immersion for me.

>TR2
Dislike the urban and industrial locations.
Dislike the Italian (hitscan) mobsters.
Not much lore behind the dagger of Xian.

>TR3
Dislike the confusing level design.
Dislike the London and Area 51 levels.
Love the meteor and ancient Polynesian lore.

>TR4
Probably the best game of the first generation.
Dislike some of the confusing puzzles.
Love the setting and locations.

Didn't play the rest to completion. I put 4 above 3 because 3 feels more like a patchwork of """"homages"""" (more like rip-offs with how it's handled) than an actual story they cared writing about.

it's an alternative reality made by the mystic power inside the dagger. We don't know where did it come from and knowing its powerful energy and capabilities to change a human being into a giant dragon we can also expect that. There's no other explanation, but remember the TR3 lore too. Some kind of extraterrestrial shit going there.

Floating Islands is a surrealist world made to keep and protect the dagger and its true entity behavior (that's why of the green guardians and the insane and twisted traps and rooms you have to pass through).

Just my opinion, but the whole final section minus Home Sweet Home appears to be based on lore of the Tomb of the First Emperor, just with a whole lot less mercury. The Floating Isles would be the outer palace area, with the Dragon's Lair the inner. Could just be based on any other emperor's tomb, though, but that's the one it makes me think of. As for why the level is the way it is:

>Heather Gibson: The inspiration behind the Floating Islands came from a programme I had seen on the Documentary Channel about Chinese myths. In a region in China an optical illusion of floating islands is created by particular weather patterns. The Chinese believed that these mirages were real islands in the sky belonging to the Emperors of the afterlife.

>Jade and dragon fire inspired the colour palette and the Jade islands have a self-illuminating texture which gave them a magical quality.

So does anyone still have a Prima (at least I think it was Prima) walkthrough guide for TR4? I had one years ago when I was a kid and I distincly remember a part where it says something along the lines of "A towlhead will pop out around the corner, send him to Allah and move on."

The Last Revelations. Why?
Amazing attention to details, they went insane with this game. Deep down Egyptian mythology, even some puzzles based on this. I absolutely loved that they included ancient game of Senet or Cleopatra's flooded ruins in Alexandria, The final puzzle is based directly on ritual of weighting heatrs straight from egyptian book of the dead. Amazing game that tests your tomb raiding skills like no other TR game ever.
