Why do people care about the raw assets for a Doom port for a forgotten console when most people love the original DOS look, and those who don't have hundreds of (source) ports already?

>> No.8128830

It's a human thing you wouldn't get it, rigger.

In a world filled with bloatware shit that takes GBs of memory to get running people find things like this fascinating. Nobody would try to meme you into thinking the early Doom ports were superior or even anything beyond mediocre at best. It's interesting to see how they worked around the limitations of this shit hardware and managed to get anything going at all though.

Curiosity thing, I guess, and apparently the Jaguar has a small but strong homebrewing scene, so maybe they could learn from it. That's not any graphical assets or anything though, that's just the source code for the Jaguar port of Doom.

Personally, I'd be more interested to see the various mockups of new content that had supposedly been made for the 3DO port. There's been a little bit of it released, some production stills from some unfinished FMV sequences Art Data Interactive wanted to implement, which got nixed, but supposedly there were concepts for new weapons and monsters which were never implemented or even remotely finished, and that's mildly interesting to me. I suspect that's just one of those things which are lost to time, however, and I don't lose sleep over it.

Instead these morons care about online clout and e-fame and have to announce what they have so they are liable and can't actually release it. Many such cases.

Apparently it does have Jaguar Doom's assets as well, though barring some minute palette differences, they have to be 99% identical to the original assets or the other console port assets.

Really? I like the weird music in that port, but it runs like ass. Check out Doom 64 also, though that's more like its own game than a port.

No, that's the Saturn port, the Playstation port ran well and had some nice new content. Some changes for the better, some changes for the worse, but overall very enjoyable.

The PS1, Jaguar, and 3do ports have PC sourceports now if you want to play them accurately with a mouse and keyboard.

No it's not. The new music and lighting does not fit the game at all. You can't go super spooky but still have the normal ass gameplay of Doom there's a reason id ditched it being a straight up horror game early on and I'm sick of you fags who watch some cunt on youtube praise this port suck it off. Jaguar port was the best port from that era, in fact it was so good a lot of other console ports were built off of it.

Personally, I don't think most of the new sounds fit the classic monsters, and I much prefer the original soundtrack with its varied mix of high tempo themes and tense atmospheric tracks.

That said, I also think the combined effect of the sounds, 'music', reverb, and colored lighting makes for a distinct atmosphere, not better than the original, but also not bad. The originals on PC are still much superior, but I personally find the PSX version enjoyable for what it iis and I see what people enjoy about it.
I think that Doom 64 goes the full way though with new graphics and levels to go with the 'music' and sound, and makes for a much better game than PSX Doom and really being its very own game distinct from the original.

>there's a reason id ditched it being a straight up horror game early on
I don't think Doom was ever full on horror at any point in development, they were always aiming to make it a fast game one way or the other, and the horror aspect is absolutely there. Doom isn't a horror game, it's an action and exploration game, but it has deliberate horror themes going for it, levels like E2M6 are full of dark and oppressive tunnels and cruel traps, set to a slow and ominous theme literally dubbed 'Sinister'
Calling Doom a horror game isn't right, but saying Doom has no horror is incorrect, because it definitely has some deliberate horror to it scattered around the games.

Who? Why do people keep coming up with this retarded cope whenever they find themselves disagreeing with a common opinion? There's a lot of versions of Doom, and a lot of people played them, for many PSX Doom was their first time playing it back in the 90s and early 2000s, and to them it's often preferable to the original because it's what they grew up with.
People have plundered this or that aspect from PSX Doom for decades now, to then put into their own .wads on PC, because they like it and want those things in their levels, this predates the existence of YouTube, much less whatever e-celeb you've got a gripe with who likely sprung up only in the last decade.

I think that Aubrey Hodge's music is kind of boring, and is strongly inferior to the original music in Doom, Quake, and Quake 2, only really working at all in Doom 64 (and even then, I still find it mostly lacking), but I also don't flip my fucking lid whenever I encounter someone who prefers it to Bobby Prince's or Trent Reznor's original work.
I don't blame some faggot on YouTube for that, I blame them having worse taste to me and I don't take it very personally or look for (frankly imaginary) reasons to angry.

>Jaguar port was the best port from that era, in fact it was so good a lot of other console ports were built off of it.
The Jaguar port ran well because Carmack had the patience to exploit its bizarre hardware, at the expense of ingame music.
The reason that the Jaguar port was used as a basis for other ports wasn't so much because that port was the most efficient possible, it was because it was already written and could be adapted for some of these other systems. This still meant a bunch of rewriting though, the PSX port had lots of work done to adapt it to its machine, and it's got music as a result. The 3DO port used the same code as a base, but it was an obscenely rushed contractual obligation port which runs like dildos, it has barely any work put into adapting it to that hardware (because there was no time).
Looking at the GBA ports, the first is based on Jaguar Doom, and it runs fairly poorly (especially with lighting variation on), then the second one does the smart thing and just runs the game in an engine designed for the GBA, and it runs a bit better.

The Nintendo 64 game I'm pretty sure doesn't use the Jaguar as a base at all.
