I never liked the save/stage select on S3&K. An overworld island view like dkc would have been fantastic. Something showing the different areas of the island. Flying battery could be floating over near Mushroom hill etc. Outside of that the game overall is easily 10/10

That would've been nice but that would mean having a higher res angel island map, and different scenes for knux (when it's floating) and having areas that look clearly like levels but you never visit until s&k, making the game look an unfinished cash grab con.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy anon. When you defeat Robotnik at the end of 3 you fall out of the sky and land on the other side of the island which has all the s&k stages. When you have the carts locked on and you are selecting stages the island will turn to the other side when you pass by all the S3 zones. I'm imagining something like the 3d blast map(pic related) but not as gay.

This is false. All of the Islands in the Sonic games were thoroughly thought out and there's internal documents/art etc.
The island is much bigger than you think so it's not unrealistic that it has all those locations.

The comparison doesn't work because DKC and SMW styled maps are non linear. Sonic's campaign is all about stopping Eggman ASAP. It's fuking SONIC. His series might not be best being just about speed like with his modern shitty games, but the idea is still there. Sonic never stops when Eggman has to be stopped. Meanwhile Bowser and KKR are just sitting there waiting for the heroes to come to them on purpose, this literally cannot work in S3K since Eggman would win if you didn't stop him at Launch Base

Although consider that the place was big enough to comfortably fit a Death Star on it, so it was probably a really fucking big island. When your travelling methods include running at Mach 1, getting shot out of a cannon, or hitching a ride on a gigantic war plane, I guess the place looks much smaller than it really is.

For all we know they likely intended to do that at one point, hence why they bothered giving Angel Island an actual rendering in the final product.
Sonic 2 was incredibly rushed, resulting in a lot of planned content being scrapped. Some of this included pic related, an overworld map of Westside Island (that would help convey the time travel-based narrative), and the general concept of "how does Sonic get from this area to the next?"
Similarly, Sonic 3 was rushed after Sonic Team fucked around for a few months with a prototype isometric version (part of why the game was split in two). We know the devs carried over 2's "how does Sonic get from this area to the next?" concept into 3's transition cutscenes, so I think it's safe to assume that they intended to reuse the overworld map idea as well, but dropped it when the game was separated into separate projects. In the the end we got a data screen instead, which probably took a lot less time to put together, and functioned better when "connecting" 3 to S&K.
