I've played brutal doom and doom 2016 however and I find brutal doom v21 harder (good thing) and yes it is possible to play faster than doom 2016.

mouse sensitivity is faster in brutal doom than doom 2016. I have my mouse sens set to max in the latter and like 4 vert/horz 2.5 else on former.

That's not a question of balls, that's a question of having a frontal lobe to not restrain yourself to a mechanic that's needless.

The primary reason you can't look up or down in Doom is because Carmack thought the perspective distortion in their software renderer looked like fucking garbage, which with any kind of later renderer is a moot point entirely. Yet still, Doom 2 and Final Doom makes a lot more use of verticality, lack of vertical aiming be damned.
Saying that a Doom game should lack vertical aiming to be true to the originals is kind of like saying that a Wolfenstein game should only use right angle incremental block walls with no height or light variety to be true Wolfenstein 3D, when Return To Castle Wolfenstein was the actual peak of the brand.

Which is what made me to ask. I didn't know you could map for it. I've never heard of fan maps for it before. What the heck are the tools? Where is the community? I hope the new release expands it.

Unfortunately Ion Fury got fucking fuck all for a community besides like 3 guys making about 15 maps in 2 years.

Turok had a level editor made by Kaiser himself which only spawned about 10 maps in like 5 years.

Yeah, but it is what it is. Arch-Vile may not have been easily feasible for the way they went about doing the port, if it's anything at all like the PSX port. The Arch-Vile was cut from that port because he has a LOT of frames, and apparently resurrecting or spawning monsters is a full no-go for that engine.

When you enter the main building, some of the cultists are placed facing away from you so they don't immediately shoot and give you some time to react. This is hilarious because it means this whole time, the game has had an easy solution to this "instant 'scanning" meme - and yet the first episode is filled with deathsquads aimed at entrances. It also doesn't help how they made higher difficulties improve their accuracy, as well as pumping up their numbers.
If someone cared enough, I guess they could have "fixed"/changed this as early as the game coming out: One of the first things I remember reading about mapedit is extracting and then editing the original levels.

What can you do in early polygon engines that couldn't be replicated in BUILD, using 3d floors and voxel objects? It would just take more work. If you look at some of the high detail maps the community puts out, it makes me think it could've hung on longer than it did if they busted their asses to make it look as good as its competitors. Imo all it needed was higher res textures, a proper lighting engine, all voxel objects instead of sprites and a lot of stacked sectors to recreate proper 3D level design like Quake and Unreal had.

Doom - E2M2, E2M4, and E2M8 have stuck with me forever
Doom 2 - MAP32, MAP07, MAP08, MAP10, MAP05, and MAP04 come to mind for me. A lot of those are saved just by the music alone.

I am currently doing some light effects and in software mode they are barely noticeable, whereas in GL mode they are because everything is generally darker.

You see, I think I pinpointed the problem with Shelly and the likes. It's PENIS ENVY. They, as characters, are very insecure about their sex and thus are trying way too hard to out-macho Duke and Wang. They're "men with boobs", as Anita Srakissaki would've called them, except they are ashamed of their boobs as well, thus being forced to wear sensible tactical gear while Duke and Wang just put on whatever the fuck they wanted. Duke was not above wearing a pink shirt and watching Oprah, but Shelly wouldn't be caught dead doing something "girly". And creators have to indulge those characters, making them hypercompetent and infallible, otherwise the whole illusion falls apart.

This, in fact, can be one step further. Let's call it "TRYHARDS VERSUS NATURALS". Bad protagonists are always trying to be something, but good ones don't try, they just are. Doomguy never pretended to be anything more than a placeholder whose entire function is to hold gun and have something to shoot at in multiplayer, and it was good enough for people. Doom was about gameplay, not the guy making faces on the HUD. Doom Slayer, on the other hand, is trying to simultaneously live up to all the stale memes AND have a serious backstory, and comes off as a huge cringelord in the end. Lara Croft was described as "Indiana Jones with boobs" back in the day, but she never tried to actually be that, she did her own thing and we liked her for that. NuLara is trying to subvert male gaze, be a female character that Anita would be proud of, she can't even have pistols as her iconic weapons because guns are not woke (even though she still uses them), and in the end she's just a shadow of her former self. Donte vs Dante, Shadow vs Sonic, we can see the pattern everywhere.

I experimented with different sampling sizes of light sources. One sample for every eighth texel, resulting in a more pixelated look. I already did some clamping to introduce visible stepping into the AO.
As you can see different texel sizes don't mix well, especially when that global light uses regular sampling.
I won't do things like lens flares or glow without visible stepping/pixelation in them. It just stands out too much.

I also think I broke my sprite system at some point last week.

Yes and no. There's multiple ways you can work around it. You can use some hackery to create crude bridges in vanilla like in Scythe MAP01, but for creating full on rooms above other rooms, this is not feasible. In boom, you can create the illusion of a floor above another floor with silent teleporters. If you want an example from an anon here, check out MAP06 and MAP13 from HFFM. I did a comparison test with Blood: Fresh Supply and Blood with Raze.

I have been eye balling duke for modding if only because I like the theme of it better than doom. Demons don't exist but aliens existing and wanting to hurt us seems more realistic. It's part of the draw for me personally. I mean what's more likely to happen? Alien invasion or demon invasion? Some people say they're the same thing then why do they get two identifications for the same thing? Boogie woogie demons don't exist except in christian fantasy but aliens existing, there most certainly is because we exist and are in space and the fact we naturally have already tried to reach for the starts implies there are others out there like us and unlike us out there who have as well. So having aliens unlike us invade and steal our chicks seems because they're incapable of reproducing on their own for whatever reason as a theme seems more realistic than the boogie woogie fanfiction. It actually makes it a bit more terrifying because the possibility of hostile aliens is just as equal as neutral and friendly aliens. And if the hostile ones are reaching us through space you can sure bet they're ahead of us militaristically as well. We'd basically have to actually fight instead of waiting for a magi rabbi to come down from the heavens because only he can defeat the demons :)

One is pure fantasy but the other is actually real. There is alien life out there because on our pale blue dot in the middle of space, is life.

EH, I think Shelly was alright. Sure, different from the iconic Build Engine protags but not terrible. Also it helped Ion Fury a lot that they had a running villain and a little back and forth between Shelly and Janus.

Not sure about the last two, but it's worth considering that Underdark Overbright was made with the Copper mod in mind. Included is a much needed change for the vore projectile, otherwise these guys are pretty draggy to deal with.
