My favorite game is Kakyuusei
It's similar at first glance with the phone calls and dates and state events during certain seasons, but it lacks the entire stat-raising gameplay system so it's a simpler game. It has a couple of things Tokimemo doesn't, though, like Doukyuuse-style town map exploration.

No. The reason Tokimeki Memorial 1 is so good is because everything about it is great: the music, the art, the careful balance between mostly realistic scenarios and dialogues and crazier anime/sentai/robo sequences, the challenge level, the satisfying grind through multiple playthroughs trying to figure out how to win Shiori. The little loving touches like this photo album you get as part of the ending. It's not good because it's a dating sim, it's good because everything was well-thought-out and given attention and care.

Every game after it missed the fucking point, even Tokimemo 2. The art is just disgusting generic anime, the music is usually stock, the girls are stereotypes, there's no difficulty or stakes. They focus too hard on magnifying the flashier aspects of dating interactions because that's ostensibly what it's about, but they forget to make a well-rounded experience altogether.

After Tokimemo, Mitsumete Knight, and Sakura Taisen, I remember that being hyped up as the next big date sim game. There were like 12 characters and the preorder bonuses had you choose one without knowing a damn thing about any of them. The game was quite boring, and a huge failure by comparison to the aforementioned titles.

>>8112182
Mostly like digital novels. For fans, as Saki was pretty popular being the sporty girl. The second one focused on the annoying girl that would exclaim something in English then the exact same thing again in Japanese. The 3rd one was with the childhood friend that has ridiculously high standards and the pity girl when the game realizes the player is so bad with everyone. I have not played Selection yet though.

The PSX and Saturn games may have some more scenes and features, but my favorite version of Tokimeki Memorial will always be the PC-E one, such a great use of the CD-ROM format on this console.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G14bzGaFf_4

The BEST opening, IMO. And I'm a big fan of the PC Engine graphics. Furthermore, I also like the voice acting in the first version the better, although the voice actresses are the same, in the first version they feel different somehow, although this may be just me.

The PC Engine was an absolute beast. I can't imagine what it must've been like to play Tengai Makyo back in '89, and then see the SuFami and MD's paltry offerings around the same period with mediocre audio, and voice acting being a complete impossibility until the Mega CD a couple of years later.

>The BEST opening, IMO.
Back then I definitely preferred traditional videogame cutscene graphics over FMV, 'cause video compression wasn't great so FMV had blocky artifacts. Plus, unless you have serious budget & talent, trying to make a fully animated opening will just look cheap, like compare the PC-98 opening of YU-NO to the Saturn one.

The PCE engine version on the PC Engine Mini is great because that way you are assured to play the latest "4FA*T" release, which may be more difficult to buy at 2nd hand marketplaces, since most sellers don't clearly photograph the disc, and it was a late release so it is way less common than the previous revisions. And you can't tell the difference between 3FA*T and 4 FA*T just by the case.

Well, I'm still learning and playing games like this is a great opportunity to do some reading and learn new vocabulary. I feel like I'm on a good enough level to understand "everyday language" in these games/manga/anime/whatever without many problems. Of course I have to look up some words here and there, especially where there's military or political terminology, like in most mecha franchises. >>8128635
you can hang out with your preferred girl almost exclusively but every 2 months or so you should go out on "pity dates" with the others to avoid getting bombed. Also the more they like you the more often you have to hang out with them to avoid a bomb.

Never played the original.
But the PS2 version has 3D graphics for the battles and there's something different about the turn-based system, but I forget what. You can read the Wikipedia article.

Mira is essentially the secret character, as you have to raise your appearance to aberrant levels to get her to even appear. I wouldn't be surprised if many players have never even seen her in the game.

Miharu Tatebayashi is #1 because she's the meme character and possibly because you get her if you do just kind of middling in the game, so she's a common result. If you make an online poll and include a joke answer, people will choose that so they can feel """""funny."""""

Shiori is next for obvious reasons. The rest are just expected variance in small sample sizes.

PS1 jap cases formats are all over the place
You got the thick boxes similar to the PAL ones but with sturdier black plastic, another type of thick boxes for 2 CDs games, regular 1 and 4 CD cases but some with black plastic for the inner part and some with transparent, and also quite a few unconventional releases using digipak cases. Not to mention collector stuff like the Square Millenium series

There's a 13-year-old in Houkago Ren'ai Club if that's loli enough for you
The 21st century re-release for Windows called "Casual Romance Club" has an English option
Of course they deleted the ages from the character profiles in that version.
Pic related is the Saturn version manual.
Fun fact: The original sex graphics from the PC-98 version are actually present on the Saturn disc, in Saturn resolution (640x200 anamorphic); they just aren't used in the game, Saturn version stops at showing underwear.

Actually, after seeing the info released since I last read about this game, it seems those two characters will be just supporting characters for gameplay mechanics. It's a bummer although I'll probably buy it anyway since it's literally the only classical-style dating sim released since 2010

Well, the only difference was the mousepad in those boxes. There was A-type and B-type, the reprint is just A-type but with a sharper printing process which looks better. The PC version came with a nice pen inside a wooden box.

>> No.8137971

>>8137594
I find it kinda surprising that they added mousepads and even mice to these games' console versions. I mean, yeah, visual novels and stuff are more often associated with PCs, but I always felt that playing them using a gamepad is comfier than with a mouse. Pressing A on a controller all the time is a lot more comfortable than having your hands on a desk and clicking a mouse button. That's also what discourages me from playing a lot of VNs, not to mention that it's much easier for me to commit to playing on a console than on PC.

>> No.8139338

>>8137594
I'd check out the PC version if it didn't have awful mouse stuttering compared to the Saturn version, and if it didn't have awful DRM that makes reverse engineering the game a pain in the ass. There's the russian release that has a proper crack that doesn't need dinking around with SafeDisc drivers and disabling SecureBoot, but still. Almost finished the fan translation (Currently on Chapter 10).

SEGA should really consider remastering the first four games, with HD art, remastered videos, and uncompressed music/audio, then release them on Steam and modern platforms. I would buy that in an instant, especially if a turbo mode and a hard difficulty mode was added.

>> No.8139348

>>8137971
SteamInput allows you to bind KB/M inputs to a controller, and even then, most VNs nowadays seem to support controller input through XInput.
>>8139338
To add onto what I was saying, what versions of the PC versions for those games has the least intrusive DRM, outside of say the russian release with a crack.

>> No.8140892

How common in other games is the reply system from Sakura Taisen with limited time to choose your answer? I've started playing it a while back, but I sometimes find it necessary to pause the game (on an emulator) to check some kanji or whatever.

That system is probably designed to make the player feel like they are actually inside the conversation, so there is a necessity of thinking quickly whatever you'll be saying. But it's a pretty dumb system, anyway. And I don't think it makes the game more immersive than the standard non-limited time system.

I am just more used to visual novels on PC. A comfortable PC setup can be achieved as well. Similar to FPS games, I'm just used to them with mouse+keyboard controls as that was what I got used to first, but unlike FPS on console there's not much of an acclimation process to playing visual novels on console as I remember being unable to figure out if I prefer "normal" or "inverted" on the right analog stick.

Dunno. The Japanese DVD release uses SafeDisc DRM and can't be peaked at using a disassembler.

The Russian version uses an easily crackable version of SecuROM.

Applying that exe to the JP version does boot the game, but it results in broken russian fonts.

I was wondering if the CD releases were any different in terms of DRM. Maybe there's a place that has uploads of those that I can check out?
