Played it for 30 minutes then I just looked up the cutscenes on YouTube because I really couldn't be bothered with the slow ass UI or the therapist's audio diary. I honestly don't get why people like anything related to Serial Experiments Lain. The anime itself was incredibly boring and barely made sense. Even after I watched a video explaining the story, it was still incredibly boring and uninteresting. From what I've heard about this 'game,' it seems boring af, too. I honestly don't see what anyone sees in this series besides waifufaggotry.

I really wish I understood why. Whenever I read people's explanations as to why they liked it, I always see the same things- aesthetic/atmosphere, 'philosophy'/"it made me think" etc. Granted, I saw it years ago, but from everything I remember it just didn't seem all that deep. People keep saying it was ahead of its time, but I don't really get that either because it honestly didn't come off as super deep and revolutionary or anything. The aesthetic was cool, but it honestly didn't feel like it had any actual substance from what I remember. I just don't get it.

>>8119327
Eh, I don't really agree. It seems like people just see something in it that I don't, but I stand by what I said that I honestly don't think it's as deep as people say it is. As for why trannies like it, they tend to be into transhumanist shit (or shit with a transhumanist-esque aesthetic) bc of wishful thinking/escapism (hoping for a transhumanist utopia in the future so they can have girly bodies) and anime girls bc of again wishful thinking and escapism (identifying with them to feel more feminine). Also a lot of trannies are programmers bc they were introverted young boys as kids and spent a lot of time on the computer/internet. Being terminally online could also be a reason for liking the aesthetic of Lain bc it has to do with a fictional version of the internet.

Seems like you do understand why many people like it? It represents a lifestyle that waa very under-represented at the time and even today, if a mainstream product comes out they don't really get it and aren't accurate in their depiction but things like Lain or Welcome to the NHK or whatever are made by people from those lifestyles so it's 'real'. Lain became what life is for a lot of people now, except we ended up with a diluted, censored and bastardized corporate internet as opposed to the kind of thing depicted in the show.

I think one of the things people don't like about SEL is that it doesn't add up to some greater conclusion even though there are some episodes where it seems like it's going to, so people say they don't get it when there isn't really an overarching "it" to get and if you try looking for one you'll be frustrated. It's more about showing you different things about technology affecting people and archetypes that were emerging as socializing moved online in the mid 90s. The example I like to point to is the delivery man who is genuine and enthuastic in his love for computers but not advanced enough to be aware of the larger happenings with the Knights. There isn't a greater purpose to him being in the show, it's just depicting something that might be familar to you. The entire series is full of complete disregard for Chekov's Gun like that. I like this kind of slow paced, meandering style of fiction and it's one of the reasons I like anime in the first place since it's somewhat more common in it.

I personally think Lain has broad enough appeal that there should be something for most people. Just what will stop a lot from really enjoying it is its very slow pacing and intentionally weird plot structure.
>You might enjoy a lot of the 90's era computer stuff, and how the morals on social media vs real life are still very relevant to this day
>You might enjoy a fair amount of the more mystery/intrigue stuff with the Knights of the Eastern Calculus, KIDS or early internet history and other strange conspiracy theory type stuff.
>You might enjoy the creepy shit that happens throughout the entire show
>You might just enjoy Lain, and find her journey and psychology interesting. Maybe you identify with her, or maybe you just pity her. Her isolation, the forces telling her to kill herself, her hallucinations, her identity issues, etc.
>You might enjoy the very low-key cyberpunk story and setting and you might enjoy just piecing the whole thing together and trying to figure out what everything mean (if anything at all).

Given the sheer amount of text, audio, and video files you need to edit. You won't see this game patched outside browser ports in the future, unless you get a physical / burn copy that you play with a translation guide next to you.

>> No.8142530

first of all chill out dude.

second of all, you're incorrect. i just think lain in particular is boring shit. i can very much appreciate the vague and ambiguous (and, as an artist, myself, most of my art is ambiguous, vague and abstract), but lain is just a whole lot of fluff with zero substance. i don't think it did what it was trying to do very well. the aesthetic is dope af, but if that's all something has going for it, it just ends up feeling empty. you can make an anime or story or whatever that isn't supposed to have a straight forward story and focus in stead on the atmosphere and the different things that it would evoke or cause the viewer to think of, but it's just not this. lain, to me, just felt like the most boring and disappointing blue balls. like >>8126246 said, it seems like it's gonna materialize into at least something concrete, but just doesn't and fizzles out and it's disappointing and frustrating because of that. if it wanted to be about technology and how it affects people, why tf did they throw in the retarded, shitty story that wastes time instead of focussing on the "tone poem" aspects and just show stuff related to that? idgi. it could just be so much better and it's a shame it's not. it would've been amazing.

I really hope, for your sake, that you're just blowing off steam, anon, and don't actually think stuff like this outside of the internet. Going through life not only being abrasive as hell, but also thinking everyone is accusing you of everything is really unhealthy. Take care, friend.

Ah, well don't be sad, anon, I'm just a random person on the internet with an opinion. If you like computer girl show, by all means, indulge. It says nothing about you besides the fact that enjoy the pictures and sounds in computer girl show. I still think it's shit, but if you think it's golden, then tell me to fuck myself and go back to enjoying computer girl show. Other's opinions on things you do that harm no one should not matter at all. Life's too short to care about that crap.
