Each new school year Jeremy Adams, a teacher in Bakersfield, Calif., gives the same lesson. When he shows pictures of celebrities like Kendall Jenner or Miley Cyrus to his students on a screen, they immediately recognize them. But faced with photos of policymakers like Mike Pence or Nancy Pelosi, the children stare blankly.

That ignorance is no joke to Adams, he writes in his new book, “Hollowed Out: A Warning About America’s Next Generation” (Regnery Publishing), out now.

“We need to brace ourselves for what Adams frets that today’s youngsters are “barren of the behavior, values and hopes from which human beings have traditionally found higher meaning . . . or even simple contentment.” Adams calls them “hollowed out,” a generation living solitary lives, hyperconnected to technology but unattached from their families, churches or communities. He cites statistics showing teen depression rose 63 percent from 2007 to 2017 while teen suicide grew 56 percent. Tragically, he writes, suicide has become the second-leading cause of death for the young.

While teachers once helped students become their “best selves” by putting the focus on curriculums, lesson plans and test scores, he writes, that’s given way to trying to “understand” young people through programs emphasizing suicide and depression awareness, human trafficking concerns, or bullying, gangs and shootings.

Adams blames the dissolution of the American family for this shift, with marriage rates down and the number of traditional two-parent homes plummeting. Although studies have shown that regular family dinners leads to less youth “smoking, binge drinking, marijuana use, violence, school problems, eating disorders and sexual activity,” most of Adams’ students say they eat dinner alone each night, focused not on family but the device in their hand.

The neglect of family life is one of the greatest causes of the hollowing out not only of students, but of American life.

Definitely. It's about 95% of the way there but there are definitely some bugs (which certainly won't be ironed out now). Play a created level for example and you will definitely bail just by going up a half pipe or else clip through assets.
The story levels sometimes, though rarely, have the same issues.

I always liked playing these games and trying to get all the goals in each level down to 1 run. It's still definitely possible in the remake, there are even leaderboards for it, but it's nowhere near as enjoyable as it originally was. The original had a flow to it that got completely disrupted with the new goals.
The problem with adding goals to the THPS1 levels and removing cash icons from THPS2 levels is that if you're already really familiar with the originals, THPS1 levels end up taking about twice as long as they originally did and THPS2 levels, which are actually better levels, end up taking half the time they originally did. They completely destroyed the original games' pitch perfect difficulty balancing and the pacing is all horrible. If they had left it alone and just presented all of the levels, goals, and cash icons as they originally were I'd be singing that remake's praises, because everything else it pretty much gets right, but as it is I have no reason to play it over the originals. I see people all the time suggesting that these remakes completely replace the originals but they're not even remotely the same games because of the changes that were made.

Honestly anyone who says this game aged like crap is a goddamn idiot.

Has it been surpassed by later installments? Sure. But what is there is still fundamentally fun and provides the same level of challenge it always did. It's the perfect of an example of a game that aged just fine.

The only thing that I would say fell out of utility was the fact Switch tricks don't incur a stat handicap, which does make sense and is a functional addition to future titles. Everything else is good as it ever was.

skate and tony hawk (except for project 8 and proving ground) are very different. Pro skater 1/2/3 are fast paced arcade-like action where you're thrown into a level and have 2 minutes to complete the objectives. you need to make combos to get high scores, and it gets exhilarating when you're good enough to hold a combo that goes into the 5 mill, 10mil, 100 mil, while you're listening to the excellent soundtracks that enhance your play sessions.

if you're tired of flying around the level and holding intense focus for upwards of 10 minutes, skate 1(only one ive played) can be a refreshing, almost calming experience. It's a true open world(not like american wasteland) and when you get used to the interesting yet satisfying controls, you'll feel like a god skating through the areas. unlike tony hawk, your combos don't have to held together by manualing everywhere so you can grind down this rail and flip out, then kick back to full speed and ollie off of another stair case, then you could skate back up the ramp and do it again without having to struggle against a manual balance or spam grinding up the wall to get back up. I'm not too familiar with the soundtrack but I know skate 2 has some great songs.

Only in the sense that "the original game didn't have features thought up after the core game was crafted".

In other words the DNA of the original game is still fully intact in the more "robust" installments. I would say something aged badly when later installments managed extract things from the core experience and replace them with something better.

What worked in THPS1 still exists in the later games exactly as it did in THPS1, hence why THPS1 still holds up. The same kind of challenge that comes from the later games can be found in the original game, just in a more limited fashion.

if you did skate irl even if you succcced, get it. fucking any of them. its easily one of the best games ever to just fuck around in. the controls are very intuitive for those with irl experience skating, and that makes it very very satisfying to play

1 is great. good map, good single-player

2 is arguably my favorite, best map, best single-player

3 at first comes off as the worst. arcade-y due to its setting, has a segmented open-world 3 different islands you can warp to (but cant skate between... bummer), kinda thoughtless single-player etc
however, it has some saving graces that make it arguably the best
>custom park editor
what it says on the tin. it used to be even better when the serbs were still up, as there were dozens of great community built parks you could DL. a bit restrictive of an editor at first glance, as you can only merge/countersink a couple pieces together. that is until you use the
>merge glitch
not gonna explain how to do it its very ez tho, but this allows you to merge/countersink any objects infinitely (or until you crash your PS3). with this glitch and a lot of time and tism, its easily the best park creator ever made. some of the incredible stuff people used to make now sadly only exists in jewtube vids, or on HDDs that still have it downloaded, but its still worth mentioning as you can pretty much make any spot you can dream of
and finally
>hardcore mode
HC turns up the realism factor by A LOT.
lowers your ollies, slows your spins, lowers your acceleration and top speed slightly, eliminates the subtle "snap-to-rail/lip" mechanic. all sounds rather shit on paper, but it makes skate 3 basically infinitely replayable imo. if you wanna do a FS boardslide down a handrail, you need to get a good run up, approach at the right angle, ollie high enough, turn your board the right way, balance on the rail, then quickly straighten your board back out to land.
the satisfaction of gitting gud is turned up exponentially in HC mode

tl;dr
start on 1 or 2 2 preferably, and then if you like it enough and wanna play HC mode or use the park editor, get 3
theyre all still pretty cheap and available at most used game shops ive been in

PC has ports of every game between THPS2 to THAW inclusive (so every good game in the series). Physical copies are tough to find but that's why the internet exists. They're good ports across the board- only 2 is weird because it's old, 30fps locked, and uses DirectDraw- but sometimes annoying to run reliably on modern systems. There's patches for that. There's even THUG Pro, a community mod of THUG 2 that fixes up multiplayer and includes most all the maps from the series up to THAW.
