I’ve never played it. I don’t even really know what it’s about.
What’s the best/easiest way to play this today?

its like a dollar every time there is a steam sale. just get it for a dollar next sale

Listen, I play like... one game a year. If that, sometimes. So I’ve literally never used Steam. BUT, I’ll check it out, thanks.

>>8111398
idk thats how i got it, its like a remastered version or something, well not remastered just made to work on modern machines.

>> No.8111435

If you do play it and you're goog'd out by the funky graphics, there're some mods that make it look / play better, I never used them because it's perfection in video game form tho but not everyone feels that way sadly :(

I love that eras graphics more than anything. I wouldn’t want to fuck with the original experience more than making it optimized for modern HDMI bullshit or whatever.

>>8111446
In that case just look up Kentie's launcher and you're good to go.

>> No.8111461

first time i played this i almost got filtered by the tutorial, which really doesn't explain anything and it doesn't really tell you what you should specialize in, i just put all the points into pistols and computers. then started

Hell yes dude, thank you. I know I’m retarded and I don’t frequent this board, but that’s exactly what I needed. You’re the man.

I know so little about this game that I didn’t even know it was an RPG like that until right now. All I know is this is my favorite era of games (maybe tied with SNES era) and this board never has anything bad to say about it.
So you think I should go with those stats too?

>> No.8111492

id do a little bit of points into lock picking as well.

>> No.8111493

It's an RPG like how System Shock / Bio Shock is, you never really get better stats, just better at doing things for the most part*

Basically every level is a mini open world a and you are given missions to complete and it is up to you to explore the levels for the best way to achieve your missions.

>> No.8111552

-The weapon balance is a little fucked but there are great weapons of every category and you can make any of them your endgame killer skill.
-Stealth is always an option except when certain boss enemies announce on obvious terms they're going to fight you.
-Explosions = lockpicking.
-Underlined menu letters mean ALT+Letter is a keyboard shortcut to it just like how Windows works (which people also don't seem to know).
-Bind your flashlight vision to Z or something nearby to WASD. Just delete all the keybinds about turning and mouselooking, you're always mouselooking. Tons of spaces are dark as shit and being able to flick on your light for a couple seconds is a very tiny use of bioenergy, acclimate to casual use of it.

GMDX is a really popular/acclaimed mod that is full of minor enhancements. It's not mandatory but it will do QoL things like make certain augs auto activate on context (like lifting things above normal strength) and some of the timed, activated equipment pieces are instead activated and run out with use. It's also a rebalance and never gets crazy about it, and adds perks to skills that you can spend XP on. A pair of facelift mods is packed into it but are optional installs (character models one is hideous, leave that off).

>> No.8111760

>>8111552
>GMDX
gmdx would have been fine if it just added mantle and fixed the obviously broken aug balance I.E. crouch speedrunning making silentrun worthless. All the inlevel balance changes it makes are hack jobs, and aesthetic is changed for the worse in most cases.

gog.com has the best version. right near the download for the file is a download for a decent graphics mod.

plus gog doesn't tether you to any client like steam does.

i only say this because you posted this:

Don't go into it thinking it's going to be a difficult action game with engaging shooting and intriguing stealth mechanics. It's more about roleplaying and experimentation. When you start to gel with the meta game you'll start to enjoy it, then it really pays off after the first few levels.

Uh no sweetie, I have to because the game is problematic.

>> No.8115554

The sweet spot for baton takedowns will feel tricky at first (just look up a diagram, I probably don't have to tell you the most common new player tip ever) but there are parts of the game mechanics that will make doing it easier that people don't mention:
>touching people is NOT detection, you can sneak up to their heels and keep pushing against them to be as close as you want. Guards can even accidentally pathfind around your physical collision box without detecting your presence if you're close to them and they suddenly want to go somewhere around you, which has them face their walking direction.
>even though they make a sound for effect while dropping, no one hears a nonlethal takedown no matter the distance (sight only) and no one hears a melee weapon's swing
>everyone will run up and stare at an object thrown near them for about 3 seconds, then run in a couple random directions, then return to where they were or their last patrol waypoint. You can do this as many times as you have items to throw in front of someone to keep them facing that way. This can be used to "point" opposite-facing guards in a direction while you take them out in order, in positions where each would otherwise see you approach the other. Crossbow darts and throwing knives also count and you can just pick them up afterward, wasting nothing
>the KO hitbox doesn't vary, it's at the same location even if the guard is running or animating in some way - or even if they are sitting, which means you can hit it by hitting their head while behind their chair
>stun baton and pepper spray are nonlethal and disable the enemy for preposterously long periods of time, you can either use them to set up or as bailouts for botched baton strikes.

I love this game but this is the biggest failing. Give me SOMETHING for not killing dudes, I don't give a shit if it's just 100xp at the end of the level, just anything at all.

there's no reward for killing them either. the game doesn't need to suck your dick at every turn.

you get exp from objective completions, npc interactions and exploration. never combat or lack of combat, just accept it now.

>> No.8118904

>>8118837
No it's not, shooting a dude in the head while he has no chance to discover you is massively less challenging and less risky than following his patrol route, distracting him if need be and then hitting him in the back in melee with a weapon that's very low damage if you have to get into a fight with it.

I never said the reward was less challenge, also doesn't shooting tend to attract attention in this game?

The only way to have fun with Deus Ex is to play it like Goldeneye.
I don't know why people keep larping that stealth is fun in these sorts of games. The only good stealth in video games period are thief 1 and 2.

>I don't know why people keep larping that stealth is fun in these sorts of games.
I almost always crouch around and slit the throats of every NSF on Liberty Island.

>> No.8118956

>>8118907
Ostensibly yes, practically, nothing particularly dangerous. Generally if you shoot someone patrolling from far away and he death screams, either no one hears him because he's too far from them, or a few other, also far away enemies will run into your line of fire to easily die the same way without posing much threat. This isn't even sniper exclusive gameplay, if you spec into pistols they do this just fine as well. The only thing more dangerous to just shoot than stealth are bots.

>> No.8118971

>>8111382
The best way I've played it was through Steam, but having a third-party application force vertical sync (some graphics drivers, ex.; Nvidia, have this feature), because the game doesn't have an option for it by default, and going into higher FPS fucks it up.

>> No.8120729

Yes, nobody likes Revision. It's basically a thoughtless attempt at a facelift with no rhyme or reason to it. For some reason they got their mod pushed on Steam.
