This is a hindsight opinion. The library might look massive to you, but we missed out on most RPGs which were left in Japan. Adding on top of that, JRPGs were still niche, you wouldn't get the true explosion of popularity in the west until FF7, so most SNES rpg games besides FF and Chrono Trigger even in English didn't sell very much. But if you're just looking at rom sets and sheer numbers, things like popularity and region exclusivity don't matter to you, you just conclude its an rpg machine, like somebody concluding that the n64 is a wrestling machine because there's an unusual number of wrestling games.

It's not even that good at JRPGs. The Mega Drive may have less JRPGs than the SNES, but the ones it has are far better. Once one includes the incredible PC Engine CD library of JRPGs, it's a total wash, the SNES loses in both quality and quantity.
In the end, the SNES was just too bottlenecked to be competitive in most genres, and the game library suffered majorly as a result, and more and more people are starting to realize this was the case and that the alternatives in the 16-bit generation, including the Mega Drive and PC Engine, were actually far superior.

it really just comes down to what kind of games you preferred
the genesis was just much more adept at pushing sprites faster, and more of them. this meant that its action games, shmups, beatemups etc were just outright superior to what was available on the SNES
not to say that SNES didnt have good games in those genres either, but comparing FF2 or 3 to SoR 2 or 3 its no contest
final fights 2 + 3 at least cuz LOL no multiplayer in 1 limitations become brutally apparent the moment youre playing 2-player and have 3 enemies on screen the absolute limit in final fight without sprite duplication (see FF3s infamous "joelevator" screen for an ex)
game grinds to a halt
only way to get SoR2 to start performing like that is to put in the mania code and start spawning as many enemies as you can

Since you mentioned it, there is also a slew of excellent WRPGs and strategy games to be found on the Amiga that similarly vastly outclass what is to be found on the SNES. And that's not even to mention the 3D games, which easily run on stock Amiga hardware, where similar 3D games require a cheating and expensive expansion chip on the SNES, as, despite the SNES being four years newer, it's CPU runs at a mere 1/3rd the speed when compared to ALL it's competitors.

the CPU is weaker, the graphics are a bit lower resolution but have higher color depth and it has a rarely used 512x448 mode. both consoles have 2 background layers. the SNES has several effects the Genesis cannot do like sprite rotation and scaling. Sprite capabilities are similiar but the SNES only has a fixed 16k of sprite RAM while the Genesis does not impose any limitation on how much of the video RAM can be used for sprites. The SNES uses sample based sound with automatic reverb you can't turn off, the Genesis has a simpler PSG.

SNES games can also use two different cartridge ROM speeds, referred to as FastROM and SlowROM. About 40% of its games are the former. FastROM games have a CPU speed of 4Mhz, SlowROM is 3Mhz.
