Here's my Trinitron manufactured in December 1988. The picture's geometry could use some improvement, but other than that I absolutely love this thing. Managed to pick up a VCR to match it.

Pretty much any monitor you can find is probably worth it but don't spend a lot of money on one without researching it. Most monitors out there are sony PVMs though.

For consumer sets just look out for the big brand names like JVC, Sanyo, Sony, Panasonic and so on. JVC especially D-series CRTs are some of the best big CRTs you can find. No name brands and tiny little VHS combo bedroom tvs are best assumed to be crap but might find something usable if you're willing to gamble. HD and Widescreen CRTs generally aren't good either but there are good ones out there.

Sounds like vertical deflection issue, usually bad caps or bad IC. Caps are easy to replace, ICs can be hard to come by, but you can still get them.
Is it worth it? Depends on whether you are capable of fixing it or know someone who will do it for free, I personally wouldn't spend any serious money on a CRT unless it's something special, no idea what KV-1380 is worth, but it looks cool.

Depends. Most newer PAL CRTs (from the 90s onwards) display NTSC/PAL60 without any problems. Sometimes there's a switch in the menu/on the remote, usually it just works.
I know there are some sets that only support PAL60, which is 480i60 just like NTSC, only that the colors are encoded in PAL. Composite NTSC signal on those will be displayed in black and white. But you don't want to use composite anyway. RGB will work normally.
I'd say if you stick to RGB and your TV isn't super old then you're good.

Well, as someone who's never done that mod but generally pretty experienced in electronics: I'd say doing rgb mod for crt telly might be one of those things that you shouldn't do as your first project, if you don't have someone you can ask questions. (So you might be better off learning to solder, then doing the consoles to build up your skills and confidence etc) One thing you could do, though, is to get a set that accepts component video (ybpr) and use rgb transcoder for consoles. From quick googling, retrotink rgb to component transcoder sells for around 65 usd.

pc monitors generally have smaller dot pitch than consumer TVs. TVs generally use slot mask, PC monitors use dot/shadow mask. the higher end models of both will often use aperture grille. also, "dot pitch" isn't the correct term for aperture grilles, but i think the size in mm is comparable.

I've read in most models the internal DVD player has a straight RGB connection to the board, giving you an easy tap for RGB if you desire. Otherwise they are typically cheap shit designed for a child's bedroom back in the day.

Pic related. Right part of the image is how things tend to look on it although obviously much less exaggerated (image was made in gimp). A kind of "ripple" or instability is noticeable primarily on vertical lines and high contrast text in particular.

Is this a tube problem, or something on the board? I hope its caps, but I have seen plenty of old CRT's with old caps and none of them do that. The tube in particular looks reasonably good when it heats up but it takes a minute to reach full brightness so it is quite old and abused.

Don't know if it has anything to do with it, but it seems to have differentially driven video stage (R-Y, G-Y, B-Y, Y) so the luma gets processed completely separately of color. When TV's started getting baseband inputs they tended to decode straight to RGB with monolithic IC's. It should't really matter unless there's some weird cost cutting going on inside the decoder chips.

Think my search for a VGA CRT is finally complete. Scored this Sony GDM-400PS today and it's looking good, least the screen is. The shell is very yelled and it has a slight crack in the front. Might try and do a full tear down and retro bright, crazy glue the crack.

Now I just gotta finish up my WinXP machine for it.

Hey bros, in PAL region here recently been offered a Sony KV-14V4U. Does anyone know if it can take NTSC input and display in full colour too? Only information I can find in manual is that the built in VCR can play NTSC tapes but not sure if that extends to any of the video inputs. Currently have an NTSC SNES that's only good as a doorstop as I don't have a display to hook it up to.
