Pretty much any monitor you can find is probably worth it but don't spend a lot of money on one without researching it. Most monitors out there are sony PVMs though.

For consumer sets just look out for the big brand names like JVC, Sanyo, Sony, Panasonic and so on. JVC especially D-series CRTs are some of the best big CRTs you can find. No name brands and tiny little VHS combo bedroom tvs are best assumed to be crap but might find something usable if you're willing to gamble. HD and Widescreen CRTs generally aren't good either but there are good ones out there.

it's possible to easily RGB mod some sets & autismo for others

hence no "service" readily available- just use a crt for 240p systems and proper upscalers and gaming monitors (1080p) for newer shit - special case scenario use a crt for ps2 on specific titles when needed

Sounds like vertical deflection issue, usually bad caps or bad IC. Caps are easy to replace, ICs can be hard to come by, but you can still get them.
Is it worth it? Depends on whether you are capable of fixing it or know someone who will do it for free, I personally wouldn't spend any serious money on a CRT unless it's something special, no idea what KV-1380 is worth, but it looks cool.

>> No.8119376

>how limited am I if i have a PAL CRT TV?
Depends. Most newer PAL CRTs (from the 90s onwards) display NTSC/PAL60 without any problems. Sometimes there's a switch in the menu/on the remote, usually it just works.
I know there are some sets that only support PAL60, which is 480i60 just like NTSC, only that the colors are encoded in PAL. Composite NTSC signal on those will be displayed in black and white. But you don't want to use composite anyway. RGB will work normally.
I'd say if you stick to RGB and your TV isn't super old then you're good.

Yeah, I've thought about buying a bog-standard CRT, and then going down the rabbit hole of adding an RGB input and passthrough (for stuff like capturing video footage with a capture card) to it.

I'll have to learn how to solder and then get the special metal cable I need for grounding the screwdriver used to pry at the inside plunger (to prevent being electrocuted), since I also have plans on modding my old game consoles and maybe finding a way to use it as a RetroArch display, since I'm finding a bunch of older games more bearable to play again with the anti-flicker shaders.

Well, as someone who's never done that mod but generally pretty experienced in electronics: I'd say doing rgb mod for crt telly might be one of those things that you shouldn't do as your first project, if you don't have someone you can ask questions. (So you might be better off learning to solder, then doing the consoles to build up your skills and confidence etc) One thing you could do, though, is to get a set that accepts component video (ybpr) and use rgb transcoder for consoles. From quick googling, retrotink rgb to component transcoder sells for around 65 usd.

with higher resolutions, the "scanlines" (really, it's where the scanlines *aren't*) get smaller and smaller. usually they're close to invisible at 1024x768 with 0.26 or greater dot pitch.

pc monitors generally have smaller dot pitch than consumer TVs. TVs generally use slot mask, PC monitors use dot/shadow mask. the higher end models of both will often use aperture grille. also, "dot pitch" isn't the correct term for aperture grilles, but i think the size in mm is comparable.

Pic related. Right part of the image is how things tend to look on it although obviously much less exaggerated (image was made in gimp). A kind of "ripple" or instability is noticeable primarily on vertical lines and high contrast text in particular.

Is this a tube problem, or something on the board? I hope its caps, but I have seen plenty of old CRT's with old caps and none of them do that. The tube in particular looks reasonably good when it heats up but it takes a minute to reach full brightness so it is quite old and abused.

Toshiba sold sets with curved tubes longer than most. Relatively easy to find ones with component video, which is nice. I had a 27" one for a while.
Lots of them are the lower profile tubes that have some more geometry issues, though.

I am not the best at noticing non-extreme lag (most LCD's with filters turned off are fine for me), but you'll notice similar latency to that of an LCD panel. If that's fine with you, then go ahead. Or look for a multiscan model (expensive nowadays).
But yeah; that set in the pic looks pretty handsome. If I had space and didn't have my eyes on a 50" Panasonic 1080p plasma someone I know's going to replace soon I'd probably be looking for one.
As far as HD goes I'd just get a plasma, honestly, if you don't get lucky in the multiscan lottery.

No, they have inherently worse geometry issues because of the nature of steering an electron beam with a magnetic field. That's why no professional crt monitors had flat screens.

On the other hand, they often have more/better input options. Pick your poison.

If you have a Miyazaki film or something, yeah, it'll be nice. Otherwise you run into the same upscaling issues as you would with any other low resolution media.
Scaled old games will look like scaled old games on LCD's, but a little worse because of those typical CRT geometry and convergence (and sometimes purity) problems.

Incorrect. Sony's D24 and D32 used flat screen trinitrons and they were reference quality BVMs with better geometry and convergence than their previous, "curved" models.

Don't know if it has anything to do with it, but it seems to have differentially driven video stage (R-Y, G-Y, B-Y, Y) so the luma gets processed completely separately of color. When TV's started getting baseband inputs they tended to decode straight to RGB with monolithic IC's. It should't really matter unless there's some weird cost cutting going on inside the decoder chips.

Japanese arcades often made use of "generic" (and I don't mean that in a bad way, as many are very well built and made by well known companies like Sega, Konami, Capcom, Irem, Jaleco, Taito, and so on) sit down style arcade cabs instead of dedicated cabinets. They're relative short, made of metal/plastic/etc instead of wood, and tend to have rather large monitors. They're a great choice for home arcade setups, as they're easy to move around, comfortable to use for long periods, and are designed for easy game swapping. If you want them dolled up for a particular game, they do have marquee holders and a section above the control panel to place a move strip.

>> No.8143848

>>8143812
Yeah, mine has very minimal burn-in, fortunately. It is at the top of the screen and you can only really see it on light images. Candies are going to maybe have this a bit less often since games were likely swapped more frequently than dedicated cabs.

No, its not widescreen.

Its a Sony Trannyton. Sorry I’m not saying more in case a tranny on here sees the listing and beats me too it. Apparently its the second biggest CRT ever released to consumers. I just don’t know if I have enough friends to help me move 300 pounds.

>> No.8143982

the sony xbr800, you see it a lot. It's interesting as probably the highest screen real estate for any hd crt, but in my mind it's not worth it because most hd content is 16:9. For anything other than maybe blu ray releases of old 4:3 movies/anime you'll be missing out without widescreen. For games older than the ps2 it's worthless, also

>For games older than the ps2 it's worthless
This was my concern. I use my current CRT for N64, PS2 anime games, and 4:3 adult cartoons from the Bush era. They all look “correct” on my 20 incher. I have a 77 inch OLED for wide screen HD content so thats not super important to me. But if the N64 doesn’t look good then its not worth it to have a giant CRT

How often are they true 4:3? I have a Dire Straits Alchemy BD and despite the concert itself being in 4:3 the video is 16:9 with not-completely-black borders on the sides. It's annoying af on an OLED when something that's supposed to be black is not black at all.

not my photo, just a random one when i searched the model number. I’m actually diagnosed OCD and my house is super organized. I’m currently picking at my scalp obsessively because when making my last post I looked at my PS2 and PS3 coomlections and was reminded that Sony originally shipped PS3 gamecases with a red PS3 in spiderman font on the spines. Then halfway through the lifecycle they switched to a black PS3 label on the spines. Sorry if not retro but those games are right next to my PS2 games (which are considered retro). Again not my picture. Sony has cursed my with a mess that its impossible to clean. Im considering throwing away every single case to my disc based games and condensing them to a single binder because of this.

>> No.8144057

>>8144034
Not that anon, but the PS3 labels grind my gears too. Also, there are a few games from 2013 or so that have blue labels to match with PS4/Vita, for example Drakengard 3.
Japanese PS1 cases have this problem too, hell, it's even worse. Some cases are standard CD jewel cases, single and double (fatboxes), but there are also Japanese exclusive 2CD cases that not only have a different label (just a big logo without the "Playstation" text), but are also a bit taller than standard cases. Just look at this >>8125284

>> No.8144071

>>8144057
I'll correct myself, it's a big logo with the text underneath instead of the text alone to be precise. A good OCD trigger anyway.
