Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games. If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

The previous thread was abandoned in a roadside ditch: >>8032161

Remember to bump, /vr/ has been faster as of late and threads get archived much quicker now. Don't be shy: ask questions, share experiences! If anyone has ideas for community events, speak up!

Do you want a 2D game or a 3D game?

>> No.8076428

>>8076417
If one reads the text that goes with the demonstration GT 1 and 2 will actually teach you the basic principles of racing in general - not simcade, just actual racing. Hell that was the entire point of getting people who played GT to become real racers and it sorta worked.

Protip: you can learn the theory but no sim available (/vr/ or otherwise) is actually realistic.

>> No.8076435

>>8076428
>no sim is actually realistic
This goes on forever, but plenty are realistic, none are just 1:1 real. But not being 100% doesn't mean you don't learn valuable skills from it being whatever percentage you believe it to be. I get what you mean, but this instills the ideas into casuals that every single game is ultimately useless to learn from because sim elitists keep saying everything is arcade. Even real race car drivers use something for training.

>> No.8076443

>>8076435
>every single game is ultimately useless to learn from because sim elitists keep saying everything is arcade
Even if we roll with this and declare everything arcade so what? If you are playing Burnout (for example) you still need to follow the same basic racing principles you do in any sim of choice - proper braking before corners, taking a correct racing line etc etc all apply. The only game series i've played where these principles simply do not apply is ridge racer.

>> No.8076446

The map is trash. The open world was cool back then but now it's apparent how boring it is to drive and race through. And the URL tracks are especially boring. Underground 1 had the track design almost nailed, the problem was that there weren't enough of them and they were all too short.
The physics are OK. The game feels a bit too slow but I guess most of that is just down to the map.
Something I always found bizzare is that the villians' cars don't have a recognizable design like the Eastsiderz from UG1 or all the Blacklist drivers from MW. It's just generic black cars. Most of the time you race against them you don't even notice.

The worst sin is being required to have a certain Style rating on your car to progress. In a game that's all about customization and personalization, I have to choose from a narrow pool of parts because some dev decided that only these particular parts look good. And funnily enough, they don't.
Not to mention, the game does a terrible job telling you that this is a requirement. If you don't know this, all that happens is that races stop appearing on the map and you don't know why.
Other than that the career is a bit too stretched and the way the chase cam tilts around is also very annoying.
One thing it did well were the engine sounds. They still sound great and they were infinitely better than UG1's shit sounds

Yes, you can drive leisurely to larp and discover shops and collect random change on the floor, but the track designs suffer greatly where UG1 gives you a nice rush. UG2's open world promise did give you Outrun true open world street racing but it's just an optional side mode, let's be honest Midnight Club 3 does it better in every way.

UG2's map would work if it unlocked in reverse order. As in, the hills section you get last because of its extreme length and little connection to anything else it is actually fun to drive in a fully upgraded car and the little harbour area that actually unlocks last would be great as a second unlock where the twisty roads would be a nice challenge increase for your low tier (probably barely upgraded) starter car. This wouldn't "fix" the game but it would go a loooooong way towards smoothing out the gameplay.

Completely baseless speculation but I think some of them are placeholders for cars that originally were supposed to be in the game but cut. Purely going off of the fact that the Mugen CRX III is the only prize car that appears twice, both times from unfitting events (Historic Cup, 80s Cup). Looking at it more closely almost all of 80s Cup rewards are just 90s Mugens, save for the R30 Silhouette so that kinda adds to the theory.
Or maybe they realized they made too many Mugen cars and couldn't make a Mugen dealership for whatever reason, which is probably the more realistic explanation

Okay you're right, It does feel a lot better once I defeated dejected angel. I also didn't realize how important transmission was early on. probably would have had an easier time if I upgraded that. It just wasn't as important in TXR 3 so I didn't bother with it. On the handling, It feels better if you change it to +15 (along with accel.) in the settings. like it's not more sensitive it just doesn't slide around or over react as much. and tapping the brakes instead of holding them prevent the car from going sideways, sometimes. On the Xbox one controller I also adjusted the skip dead zone to .352. feels a tad better as well so adjusting that may help.

It's fun. Sure there are no cops or muh intense action but it's an OK game. Rubberbaning is way more chill compared to UG1 or MW and Carbon. Customization is retarded. Sure there are a lot of parts but you're forced to whack on the most ridculous stuff on your car just to get to the another stage. Overall the game feels rushed. Probably because BlackBox was forced to release games every year. Therefore it just feels empty even with all rice in the world. Also once you get the hang of it gets kind of too easy. As a nostalgia magnet it's cool but it definitely a casual tier imo. Wish me luck in a final race frens.

Between the retro ones, TXR Drift 2 (mountain pass racing) and TXR 3 (highway racing, where the series started) are usually considered the cream of the crop, but Zero (also highway focused) is also worth playing, and any of the older games in the series might have some weird cars you might like.
The Euro and JP only prequel of Drift 2 (Kaido Racer in yurop) has a ton of Euro cars in it for example, while Zero (and the drift games) has hondas, which 3 lacks.

Removing the race mods beginning with the PS2 titles, reusing PS2 car models and engine sounds from the PS2 era in the PS3 games (lots of bad press for that one), and I haven't kept up with it but I'm pretty sure they copypasted a ton of stuff between the PS3 and PS4 as well, it's just not as apparent anymore because improvements between gens are increasingly dwindling.

This and probably also licensing issues. Almost all of the race mods in GT2 are based on Super Taikyu cars. The only Super Taikyu car since then was the Drider Civic in GT4.
And as cool as the race mods are, the truth is they weren't really used much, nor was there really a reason to do so. You had to spend the money for all 3 weight reductions, and an additional ~90k credits and all you'd get outside of the different look was the ability to adjust the aerodynamics. The generic wings from GT4 served the same purpose and with GT having a livery editor now the different look isn't that big of a draw.

If you're a casual shitter then you'd be correct, just use one of the overpowered [R] cars you've won at some point, but personally I hugely appreciate how much it expands the selection of cars to race against other [R] cars in a believable fashion, it allows for better fine tuning of power output to match your own skill level against the AI (because if you drive a fixed 600 hp [R] car against 600 hp [R] AI you'll just leave it in the dust in corners), and I also enjoy the suspension, gearing and differential fine tuning necessary when you build up your own race mod.

I bet cars like that is why a vehicles weight gets unevenly weighted against in later titles when calculating their performance rating.

I don't feel like this deserves its own thread so I'll ask here..

Some months ago an anon posted a link to Daytona USA 2001 that had been modded to use the original arcade/Saturn soundtrack. I burned a CDI back then, but I'm setting up a GDEMU now and it doesn't seem like I saved the cdi.

Anyone got an idea where I might find that again?

I don't know, you tell me how I'm supposed to win rally races against purpose built rally cars with insane grip when any other car has fuck-all for grip on dirt tires, including a race against what's easily the quickest car in the game. It's managable if you have an identical or equal rally car as the AI, but as soon as you're driving your own race mod you have to cheese your way to victory by wallriding even against regular rally cars, and the Escudo and Cultus are pretty much only beatable if you drive one yourself. Unless there's some dirt driving magic I still haven't figured out after twenty years, but I highly doubt it.

That's a stretch, at least against [R] cars. Least powerful car I've ever won a GT All-Stars event with was the 353 hp Dodge Concept Car with a fully upgraded race mod (not the LM Edition) because it goes like hell for some reason, otherwise I need at least a 420 hp RX-7 or something.

HP unlimited can always be absolutely destroyed by shit like slapping a fucking off turbo on the GTO twin turbo and slamming 800HP through the wheels. Thanks a lot, anon, that game looks pretty good.

By the way, I just found out RVGL supports custom cups since the end of 2020.
https://re-volt.gitlab.io/rvgl-docs/cups.html

I made my own "Ultimate Cup" which combines all four cups into one sixteen track cup, but also uses sixteen cars instead of eight. I like it when there's more cars, but I left the other parameters untouched to keep the spirit of the original game.

LOL, yeah I love how chaotic RV can get. I just modified the ultimate cup to look like an F1 championship, with the modern points system. I also tripled the number of laps in each stage. I just wish that I could change the "you have to finish at least third" part, I think it'd be really cool to experience having a few really shitty races and then having a comeback.

If that's the kind of racing autism you're looking for, go straight for GP2-3-4. GP2 models the 1994 season, minus two obvious omissions in the driver department, GP3 gets the 1998 season and 4 has the 2001 season. You can mod all three to your liking, I'm currently playing 2 with a 1991 mod.
Also consider f1 challenge 99-02, it runs on a early version of the rFactor engine, really moddable and great fun in general.
