What's the best way to play the boomer pokemon games? Is yellow on the GBPlayer a good option or is it the kind of games you have to play on mobile to understand?

Play Gold however you want. First gen is fine and dandy but the second had the engine and code more figured out and had a lot more to do.

Even better. Play crystal.

>> No.8100335

they're very standard RPGs aside from having cute monsters as PCs
handheld or console doesn't really matter, though you're cucked either way because multiplayer is a big component

Honestly what you should do.
If you want to stick with first gen, FireRed on GBA is probably the best Pokemon game ever made, you do lose the 8bitness tho.

>> No.8100350

Yellow sucks if you are on the spectrum and can't help but use Pikachu/Charmander/Squirtle/Bulbasaur/two others (likely Kadabra + one) then it's pretty lame. I played through red and yellow in the last two years and red was much more enjoyable because I was forced to catch pokemon and actually develop a team. The game is super easy, and essentially broken the moment that you get Kadabra, but Kadabra + the three original starters is just dumb.

>boomer pokemon games
They were in the late '90s. Baby boomers are from 1946 to 1964. Stop parroting buzzwords and learn what they mean. They are no more "boomer" than every other game that was out for the N64 and PS1 by 1998. If you think the 4th console gen is "boomer," then you must have had really awesome parents, because actual boomers grew up with games and arcade shit before the video game crash in 1983.

>> No.8100372

If you care about copying shit to the new generations then play the 3DS VC releases. They also let you get Mew and Celebi legitimately if I remember right.

Otherwise just do whatever, it's never been complicated to emulate a gen 1/2 pokemon game or play them on cart. Except gold and silver I guess since they eat batteries like candy.

Why even encourage mouth breathing retards who honestly think games that were around 1998 is for boomers in an image board about late '70s, '80s, '90s, and early '00s vidya? What kind of dumb fuck thinks that boomers are playing Half Life 1, Metal Gear Solid, Ocarina of Time, Xenogears, Banjo Kazooie, Spyro, etc.?

words change meaning over time
the addition of "zoomer" to the lexicon has shifted "boomer" from representing someone born in the post-war baby boom to someone older than a zoomer
the original definition is nearly meaningless in daily use anyway since the vast majority of baby boomers are dead

>> No.8100526

I got no problem with that, but before the rule change last year, the majority of this board was consoles between the first gen and the fifth gen, with Dreamcast allowed and the occadional 2000 PC game, but if we start calling every game made before Gen Z, boomer, that same word loses all meaning for any board about older vidya, and this serves no purpose othen than to derail threads where those who grew up with the '80s or '90s as kids shit on those who came after. At that point, this moves the word from a meme to a shit catch all buzzword. It is like, if you have an issue with boomers in /vr/, it is served no other purpose than trolling to call 75% from /vr/ threads, boomer this, boomer that. Like bitching about weebs in 4chan.

>> No.8100793

I feel like people always sleep on the true strength of Pokemon which is that it is the only truly competitive turn-based RPG. The single player does not challenge the player in order to be accessible for kids but the battle system really comes alive when competing with human opponents.

So many so-called "Pokemon killers" fail to consider the PvP aspect at all. There is really no other video game filling that niche, the closest thing to competitive Pokemon are tabletop trading card games.

Adding to this, if you know what you are doing, and have a way to dump your saves from cart/easily copy them from your emulator, you can actually port the saves in to the 3DS VC release. There's a few steps involved to get it done, and an extra hex-editing step for crystal, but it's not the hardest thing ever.

If you're an impatient kid, sure. The original games are solid and fast playthroughs if you mangage your items and team well. Yeah you could just grind your starter up to 100 and dominate but the fun is making due with what little you have. Taking down higher level enemies with Pokemon 10-15 levels under makes it feel like more of an accomplishment.

- Get Yellow, Pokémon Stadium, and the N64 GamePak.
- Boot up Yellow, in Pokémon Stadium, and play it until you beat Brock at the first gym.
- Look into all of the rules and level restrictions for the different cups in Pokémon Stadium.
- When your Pokémon meet the criteria, save them into the game and play / beat that cup. Do this until you beat both Yellow Version, and Pokémon Stadium.
-Make sure to play through Stadium twice, once you beat it the first time all the trainers switch up teams and the game has an increased secondary difficulty.
-Then do the same thing with Crystal Version and Stadium 2.

That is how you capture the definitive 90s Pokémon experience without all of the other major components. Like Pokémania dominating all aspects of life via a TCG, an anime that airs every day, commercials, merchandising, constant parodies, and friends who are absolutely obsessed and spreading rumors.
And you know, actually being a kid again AKA the target audience.
Also nice b8.
