Starting to see the gap between what they consider the tastes of "Players" and "Pros"-- since Players is dominated by the more action based titles, while Pros are more playing the "thinking" sort of titles: RPGs, puzzle games beyond Tetris, and odd computer ports like Maniac Mansion and Solstice. Seems more that it's the causal young audience (kids to teens) vs the adults. Little details emphasize this: the arcade-esque Tecmo Bowl is high on the Player side, but the more technical and slow paced NES Play Action Football ranks near it for the Pros. Players has a lot of licensed stuff-- TMNT (both), Ducktales, Simpsons, Rescue Rangers, and Batman all hold rank there. Pros meanwhile only have Batman.

As ever, Dealers are the wild card that basically show "well, SOMEBODY'S buying this shit" with things like Ghostbusters II, Casino Kid, Dig Dug 2, Fester Quest's, Back to the Future, and others. It does help explain the seeming randomness of the Top 30 that these three sometimes disparate views are basically mixed together.

What's this "hold reset when turning off the console in order to save" thing? Final Fantasy 1 also has that instruction but I thought all it did was erase the data, not save it.

>> No.8095512

>>8095502
>The short answer is that we have two problems - when the NES console is powered down, voltages coming to and from the CPU are a bit wonky (they “float”) as the system powers down, *and* these battery-backed save cartridges were very new and didn’t have any protection against errant voltage.

>Basically, powering down the console the usual way *could* cause a voltage spike that would damage your save data. Holding down the reset button locks the CPU into a low-power (pre-startup - the reset line blocks the “power good” signal which prevents most other components from being powered) state - ensuring that errant voltage can’t cause problems.

>Later, as the SRAM technology developed, components were added in the cartridges to prevent these stray voltages from nuking your save file - these are the revisions of the game without the warning on the save screen.

>This is all because the NES was never designed with saving data in mind - it was basically a hack; some clever people figured out that you could map save data into the console’s memory, and then persist that data in SRAM using on-circuit memory.

As a child reading this, I would have gladly killed people just to go there and give it a go. I was so angry when I found out it shut down and I'll never get the chance to play full immersion simulation Battletech mech game. Fuck you time.

Alright, time for the games that were mentioned that didn't actually make it. First off, one I missed in issue #18.

Mike Ditka Big Play Football AKA Quarter Back Scramble: American Football Game - Pony Canyon
Was pretty much finished and ready to ship, but got shelved since SNES was comin'. The pretty much complete prototype was hoarded for a time, then bought and dumped by some people on nintendoage, who then slightly modified the dump(probably to make it functional) and sold as repro's. That repro got dumped and released, but can be somewhat hard to find. pacnsacdave got his hands on that copy and is now selling reproductions of the repro dump. Check the rom depot under homebrew for a copy.

Mini-Putt - Artech Digital Entertainments
Famicom port of a computer game. Finished translation was shelved again because SNES was on the way. NP had at least 1 prototype if not 2, neither has surfaced. Fan translation exists.
https://www.romhacking.net/translations/185/

The Magic Candle - American Sammy
Computer RPG that got ported to the Famicom, and was supposed to come to the NES as well. Didn't in the end, but a fan translation fixes that.

Not much to report with the missing game from the last issue, and only 2 new games this time. But the next thread will have #22 and #23, and there's 9 games mentioned in those two that didn't make it. See you folks in the next thread when we cover Mike Tyson's second NES game(and the fun and drama behind it), a 3rd Golgo 13 videogame from Vic Tokai that never actually got off the ground, and licensed vaporware featuring Twin Peaks and Vanilla Ice.

Man this web is silly. Overall enjoyment trumps everything else, but it's just one score among eight? I always figured Theme & Fun was the only category that should matter, and this seems to confirm that.

"Initial feel" is a weird category. It lasts just a few minutes, but is weighted just as much as the rest? It's like saying the taste of your first bite of dinner is as important as how long you stay full for after.

The comments are weird too. Play control is "not as important" in Final Fantasy, but shouldn't it get top marks there since it would be impossible to improve them?

There are scores in Silent Service? I wonder whether those are good ones. Probably not I guess!

I remember one day opening NP and in the letters section was one from a guy with my friend's name, same first and last, and same town. I always wondered if it was really him, since I never knew him to ever play video games. I didn't ask because I thought it'd be weird.

Haha differences betwen NES SimCity and SNES SimCity will be purely graphical huh? I wonder whether there's really no more slowdown in the NES version when your city gets big.

Haha casually previewing Totally Rad's final boss. Reminds me of what they did with the Blaster Master box.

Haha that controller sounds terrible. I'm guessing it didn't do too well in the market.

Or wait, is it just a joystick, with a static base below the handle? I was assuming it was held up in the air like a Wiimote.

I wonder whether we will see a lot of high scores from female players for The Little Mermaid soon? I guess it's actually plausible that that game actually succeeded in appealing to female players. Probably the Mario approach of simply appealing to everyone is far better, but whatever, Little Mermaid is a decent game too. Even if it's made extra easy just in case you randomly start menstruating or thinking about the mall or whatever in the middle of a game.

I took that to be something like an accessibility score - like, would this game confuse James Rolfe at first and force him to accept some handholding from Mike Matei, or would he be able to dive right into it without difficulty? Is it too hard or too boring somehow right at the beginning?

I imagine those concerns would be really important to people interested in selling the idea of trying a game to a bunch of idiot kids who may or may not have patient older siblings to guide them or excited friends to hype them into persisting. If Nintendo staff was feeding these scores back to the developers sometimes like they say, and if they were using them to help decide which games to focus on most in the magazine, then they'd want to penalize games that would initially confuse James, because those might not become popular and sell well and promote the magazine well, even if they were ultimately very enjoyable games.

That's my guess anyway.

James is a moron who gets killed on the first screen of RE2 because tank controls are "too hard". I really hope he's not the metric Nintendo was using all these years.

I remember that in my first time playing RE2 I was actually killed on first screen because I couldn't figure out how to get your weapon ready and shoot. I didn't really like the game and never played it since then.
I still don't like the tank controls.

I also had problems with analog stick in general because I jumped from NES to Dreamcast. I only got used to it after a couple of month.

Afaik James is a NES guy too and not much of a gamer, so it would require lots of practice for him to get good in RE. Which he obviously won't do.

Tank controls seem like something that this era's Nintendo Power would certainly drop a Play Control score for.

>> No.8101325

But not knowing the weapon button is different than spinning in circles and getting killed by zombies that move 1 mph. I don't know how James can like horror genre so much and yet refuse to learn RE.
