I've always liked the Yoichi Kotabe artstyle that commonly appeared in manual art for Mario games after the GameBoy's release. It's a lot of personality that newer games seem to be missing, I think this sort of style faded shortly before the Wii. An older neighbor taught me how to draw by tracing the artwork in these manuals, perhaps some of the comfiest and deeply nostalgic memories I have.

I like how he was portrayed in Super Mario RPG, more of a brash bully that's full of himself and gets carried away, but means well for his troops and those he cares about. The dynamic of him begrudgingly teaming with or being friends with Mario makes him feel somewhat redeemable or likeable, that he's not constantly being a big jerk or being a bad dude just for the sake of it. I don't think any villain thinks of themselves as the villain, so I've always appreciated having his perspective put into view.

Kotabe took Miyamoto's illustration for the first game and seamlessly developed it into a full-blown visual style. That's a fucking PRO at work right there.

It has to be something you want to do. I already liked drawing, I already liked Mario. It's something that came about naturally from combining two joys. It doesn't help much to try and force something that simply wasn't meant to be. There's always something to learn eventually, even if you try to avoid it.

In Super Mario Advance, The SMB2 remake for GBA. There are multiple additions to the game to make it easier or show off the GBA's power. One change that I find was kind of unnecessary and weird was in World 5-2. There's a jar you can go down and in the jar is a weird bouncing blue door. It hurts the player if you touch it and you can even kill it with a star. I thought it was strange as a child and it turns out it's a blade enemy unique to this game. It hasn't appeared since. (And no, it's not the blades from Yoshi's Story, the Mario Wiki specifically states they are two different things)

Wario Land II introduces Hen, Wario's pet chicken that you rescue in "Return the hen to her nest". We know it's his pet as he introduces her as “My beloved pet! She wouldn't harm a flea so be nice to her!” in the official manual. Because the cutscene shows Wario chasing his stolen treasure, but then diverting course to chase after his pet hen instead when he sees her in duress, made many assume Wario loves her more then his treasure.

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/n02/dmg/aw2j/page4.html

However in the official Wario Land II website, Wario is frustrated that Hen doesn't return his affection and always runs away from him. He callously threatens that if she keeps it up he'll cook her and make chicken.

Google Translate:
>That's it! As you can see, it's moss! This is not an enemy! It ’s my cute pet! However, I'm having a hard time trying to convey my affection! Far from being naive, when I see me, I run away! If I run away next time, I'll eat it as fried chicken! Kecko would be good! Yakitori is also good!

DeepL Translate:
>That's it! It's a cock-a-doodle-doo! He's not the enemy! He's my little pet! But I don't know if he can feel my love, but he doesn't take to me very well! Not only does he not like me, he runs away when he sees me! If he runs away again, I'm going to turn him into fried chicken and eat him! I bet it's really good! Yakitori would be good too!

Mario has creatively bankrupt Nintendo.
Last year's Year of Mario made me fucking hate the sight of that soulless mascot. Mario should become a corporate mascot like Mickey Mouse and take an exit from gaming. No more fucking Mario games, plenty of better IPs that need the creative attention exist. Mario characters have undergone major character assassination (bowser, yoshi even) while spin off titles are better than mainline entries (Luigis Mansion).

Also, 75% of Switch icons are of Mario and Mario related IPs. Other IPs have a laughably small amount of profile icons.
Being a Switch owner who cant stand Mario is fucking tough.

I went on a crazy buying spree back before the video game market went to complete shit, like around 2006-2007; I bought a few backlit SPs and Micros just for the hell of it, and because they were dirt cheap, even bought an e-reader and a complete set of Mario 3 cards for like, 20 bucks or something. Putting the cape feather and veggie grass into Mario 3 was totally schway, probably something that would have made me jizz myself when I was 8 years old. The bonus levels were decent, too.

Bowser was my hero growing up. My introduction to console gaming was the SNES I received for Christmas when I was five years old, and I was intrigued by his render from SMRPG on the system's box right away. The game I unwrapped that morning was Super Godzilla, and I hoped to eventually discover the game that spiky dragon was from. Fortunately, I would receive Mario All-Stars from a relative a couple of days later, and you can imagine my excitement when I made it to World 1-4 and Bowser's portrait suddenly appeared in the background.

Funnily enough, I did not know that this character was the evil King Bowser mentioned in the instruction manual (the All-Stars manual does not make it obvious what he looks like), and assumed this "dragon" was something more akin to a pet of the evil king's. I don't remember how I had his identity confirmed for me, but it blew my mind that a cool looking monster could be the scheming evil king himself in addition to a fire-breathing reptile, and not merely a vicious beast used to dispose of meddling do-gooders by a humanoid antagonist.

The only interpretations of Bowser that I've found lame were Sunshine's, which I chalk up to the terribly ill-fitting voice acting and his very indirect role in the story (including his own boss fight), and Superstar Saga's, because the game runs a humiliation train on him non-stop once the Koopa Cruiser is shot down at the start. I don't think any recent game has done him a disservice. I really loved him in Odyssey, for instance--he gets a dapper outfit, has his own odyssey parallel to Mario's where he gathers artifacts for his nefarious wedding on the moon (I just wish it weren't entirely offscreened), tames and rides a realistic dragon that shoots down Mario's ship, and you even get a taste of what playing as him in a platformer would be like (which I would absolutely love to lead to something more substantial in that vein later). There's also Bowser's Fury, which needs no elaboration.

Thank you for sharing these. I was only aware of the Geno concept art shared by the artist on Twitter. SMRPG is my favorite video game, and just one piece of concept art for it is more than I ever expected to see. It's such a unique take on Mario's world that is so seldom and subtly referenced in future games, and yet it was the very first take on a wider world with emphasis on story for the franchise, so you'd really think it would have left more of a lasting impression on the brand identity than it has. The original plan for the game sure seems different, and explains the intriguing collection of enemies now scattered from their themes in the final product. It looks like the intended final boss ended up as a regular enemy, too.

I would say that it's never too late to change and learn any given skill you could think of, but that would still require effort from you which you apparently don't want to put in, because it's so much easier to feel sorry for yourself.

Katakana is used for loan words, but it's also used for emphasis, comparable to italics or bold text in English. Also, it's easier to render katakana in low-resolution text than it is hiragana. In fact, there are more than a few famicom games which write all of their dialogue in katakana, not only because it means less space on the cart taken up by character maps, but also due to being slightly easier to read and taking up less space. You can see this in tons of games, but NES Open Tournament Golf is a good example. Fuck me was it a head trip seeing a game write full sentences using katakana. Old computers and Japanese really don't work well together.

On topic for the thread, here's something I thought interesting. I always believed that birdo (or ostro) being a "boy who thinks he's a girl" was a change made in North America to prevent people from thinking mario was promoting domestic violence, but it says that in the manual for Mario USA as well. Given birdo was later paired with yoshi and given a feminine voice, one might assert then that this is another forgotten element of Nintendo character-building, or maybe they just decided having a trans egg-shooting dino-whatever was too weird for the series.

This weird Voorhees-inspired enemy in Super Mario Land 2 (called "J-son" in Japanese and German and "masked ghoul" in Nintendo Power) is not only a Halloween-themed graphic swap of the game's Goomba, but actually DOES seem to be a Goomba. In an older Japanese encyclopedia, it's hinted to be a Goomba, and in the Italian (and Spanish?) version of the newer Encyclopedia, it's renamed "Horror Goomba". The game's Kodansha manga adaptation outright confirms them to be Goombas in disguise that even turn into "Boo Goombas" when they are killed(!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0H_OJX81b8&t=1031s
(Also, check out that manga sometime, it's pretty wacky and depicts things such as that collector enemy being an alter ego of the Witch boss, a rare Japanese interpretation of the Mushroom King, implies that Mario Land was a kingdom inherited from Mario and Luigi's parents, and even has an extremely early form of "Waluigi" and what the Peach version may have been like among others.)

Apparently because Diddy was supposed to BE Junior, but Nintendo didn't like the radical redesign so Rare made him his own character. This might have lead to some confusion somewhere along the line, hence the "DK Jr. grew up to become current DK" idea, but no, modern DK is OG DK/Cranky's grandson.
>>8120805
>I don't think gorillas age rapidly enough for Cranky to have an adult grandson while Mario hasn't changed much since the arcade days, though. S'weird.
Here's something weirder most people don't know: the characters in Retro Studios' Country Returns were intended to be a new Kong generation. There are remnants of this in the original Wii version manual. Page 4: "Back in my day, I'D TAKE CARE OF THIS MYSTERIOUS PREDICAMENT WITHOUT BREAKING A SWEAT," and on page 14: "Here's a tip from MY DAYS AS A BELOVED HERO: Try rolling off a ledge and jumping in midair." This quotes heavily imply that this Cranky is actually Rare's DK, and Retro's DK and Diddy are a new generation. This probably got abandoned because it's one thing to make the OG DK an old dude, but it's quite another to imply that he passed away.

They already started calling Jumpman "Mario" as soon as Donkey Kong Jr., but there's some truth to the Lady/Pauline thing - while "Pauline" soon became her name in the west, that name was only applied to her Game Boy redesign in Japan, so a lot of fans who didn't have any context for her western name origin somehow thought she was a new character altogether. It didn't help that Japanese third-party licensors didn't know either, and so you get oddities like Lady/Pauline having two profiles on the same page or manga where the old Lady was established would now have the new Pauline without acknowledging it. It had to wait until 2014 when Nintendo decided to clarify that they were the same character in a Smash Bros. trophy of all things, which was supported in Odyssey references.

Mario stuff like Super Mario Land 2, Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion, etc. gives me life though. I live and breathe off of that shit. Also they ruined any fun you could get from the possessions as when you play as an enemy you can't control it like Mario, instead you get its own move-set. For example: with hammer bro can only jump in a retarded way despite how its humanoid. You are restricted to using it for a short period as you can't even traverse most courses properly. That the controls are praised and said to be the best in the series is ridiculous and really highlights just how deplorable video game journalism is.

It feels overly manufactured, like it was designed by robots or people working solely for a paycheck with no passion felt in it. Sure, there's tons of references and callbacks to older Mario games, but all of it feels empty. There's a ton of NPCs, people, creatures, etc, but it doesn't feel alive.

I genuinely feel existential dread when playing Super Mario Odyssey and it's difficult to pinpoint the exact source of it. Sure, Mario always gets new games to cash in on his popularity and status, but something about Odyssey feels cynical, it just makes me uncomfortable. Objectives outright feel worthless with how many moons they throw at you for doing bare minimum. The sound design feels too snappy and "modern." It feels like a game that was designed by focus groups and charts.

The exact same with BOTW too. With the Switch they completely erased the Wii aesthetic, instead of music in the background there is no music, instead of colorful text its just gray text surrounded by gray rectangles on a white background. And you can find both of those things in the game, when you speak to an NPC instead of a speech bubble or something its just thin white text surrounded by a thin white rectangle. Its a minimalist design, essentially. Nintendo probably thought that their previous Wii aesthetic was outdated or something, and that they needed to be more "modern".

That I actually think is a fair argument, and not just soul vs soulless. There is no inspiration. As well as what I said about how the controls are bad.

>The exact same with BOTW too.
I could go on and on for hours about Breath of the Wild, it might warrant me creating a Zelda general, but I'd have to keep it retro themed. There's a lot I could say about what it loses that made the older games special. But, I agree. I think the problem is that both of these games just feel like they're going through the motions with no real or elicit strong emotions to them, which is why they're so easily appealing to bunch of people with no personality and experience.

I hate being so easily rewarded and so frequently in games, I want to feel like the struggle is worth it and worth experiencing, it's all about ups and downs. These newer games are all just flatline. Worse is that they feel like everything should be explainable, understandable, they make worldbuilding feel like cold soulless study rather than just be something you live.

Older Mario games would often included a bunch of random shit just for the hell of it, but it still felt purposeful in a weird way and matched the tone. I think Super Mario Land 2 is a good example of this:
>Why does Mario have a castle?
>Why six golden coins?
>Why are these zones here? Did Mario make them or are they natural?
>Why does Mario have a giant statue of himself?
>Why do the trees look like pickles?
Even Wario wasn't really explained back then. It was widely incohesive yet formed a cohesive tone for the game, it was weird and nonsensical, but felt like a palpable fantasy. For some reason it matched and worked. These newer games focus so hard on trying to make everything seem realistic and cohesive that it ends up feeling boring, bland, lifeless, soulless, the escapism is gone. It doesn't feel like anything is a fantasy or personal charm of anyone, it just feels like shit they included or came up with because.

With people chatting about Bowser's personality and Mario's personality developing through adaptations/time, I've always been interested in Luigi's personality. Stuff like Peach-hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen! and the live-action movie seem to go in a different direction with him, making him greedy or an earnest main protagonist. But then you see traits of his cowardly/shy personality popping up early in the DIC cartoons and that one Mario World OVA; then later in the Super Mario Adventures comic, and when Martinet recounts coming up with Luigi's voice. It's interesting to see those all happening before the games really did anything with it, and makes me wonder if they all happened independently or had some influence on each other.

Not necessarily related to Mario, but if Nintendo still had third party dominance in the N64 and GameCube days, I wonder if the Nintendo Power artists would make a story about Nester joining Tommy Vercetti or Dante in their adventures.

Perhaps it would've been structured a lot differently to be more mission related than just chaotic. There are plenty of games on Nintendo systems, then and now, where you kill other people, most notably timesplitters. They wouldn't approve of killing random innocent people, but they'd have no objection to killing people as part of an enemy resistance. They would certainly object to 'No Russian', for example.

I almost feel like we haven't gotten enough warioware, but then games only come every so often and we'd get tired of them.

I wish there was more WL styled like WL2 and WL3. WL4 and Shake It were good, but I found their traditional style to be a drawback compared to what I thought were pretty interesting design evolution (in wario 2 and 3).

Game & Wario, WarioWare Gold, and Get It Together feel like they have little reason to exist individually when they could've held off and combined all of them as one experience, it feels like we haven't gotten much out of WarioWare rather than enough of them. None of them in particular have felt all that satisfying as of late.

I doubt we'll see anything similar to the first 3 Wario Land games considering Gunpei Yokoi is dead. It's disappointing there's a lot of games with good ideas on Switch, but so many of them feel half-baked. Especially the newer Mario sports games. None of them really do anything that makes me feel like playing them or preferring them over the older releases.
