I remember someone on here telling me to stop using save states and just watch other people play the game if I need them. I've continued to use save states to play retro games. Just wanted to let them know they can't stop me and I'll keep doing it.

Absolutely based. Save states make the game more enjoyable, you are not circumventing a challenge, you are using your skills to win in the same way you would without save states. Saves a lot of time and agrivation though.

Maybe this is an argument between beat and finish?

I guess if you get to the end of a game, you finished it.

If you actually bested the game within its own design, then you beat it.

Maybe some could argue that you can also have beaten a game if you overcome its limitations by circumventing it. Man vs machine.

I suppose then it's really only a matter of honor. In a fist fight, even if you pull a knife on the guy, as long as you're still standing at the end, you're the winner.

You wouldn't have as much accomplishment as someone who felt the dread of death after repeating a stage several times, trudging along and reaching that definitive difficulty filter with anxiety, knowing that one wrong move would set him all the way back to the level or even the start of the game. Many games can if you allow them to. Aside from the mechanical skills, there's patience, focus, risk management, memorization, logic, improvisation, acting under pressure, acceptance of luck. These are all personal factors video games can exercise.

The usage of external tools prevents those opportunities that test and may grow character. Unfair, grind, tedium, jank, illogical -- these are all pieces of the test in addition to the "fair" challenge. Playing a game without the safety of external tools is a different experience and will effect your approach.
